Senegal
Culture
Like many African tribes, Senegal's main indigenous group, the Wolof, has a highly stratified society wherein status is determined by birth. At the top of the social heap are traditional noble and warrior families, followed by the farmers, traders and persons of caste - blacksmiths, leather workers, wood workers, weavers and griots (GREE-oh). Griots are the lowest of the castes but are highly respected, as they are in charge of passing on the oral traditions and are usually the only ones who can recite a family or village history. They used to be the entertainers of the royal families; these days, if you're fortunate enough to hear a kora played, the player will almost certainly be from a griot family. Slaves occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder, and although slavery is now long gone, many descendants of former slaves still work as tenant farmers for the masters of old. Around 90% of Senegal's population is Muslim, including the Wolof and Mandinka. (The Fula, or Peul, and the Diola are animists by tradition, while many of the S©r¨r are Catholics.) One of the primary differences between orthodox Islam and the Senegalese version is the latter's reverence for its marabouts (holy men), who are thought to link their disciples and Allah. Few people would think of making a big decision without consulting their town's marabout.

Senegal Tropical Senegal is lauded for beauties both natural and urbane. From its suave capital, Dakar - many travellers' favourite amongst the larger African cities - to its entourage of internationally known musicians, Senegal brings in more visitors than any other country in the region. Much of its lands are lush and vital, especially when compared to the deserts that surround it. Many of its visitors are package tourists soaking up the sunshine in upscale hotels, but the best of Senegal - a good wander through its streets and plains - is free.
Warning
The Casamance region is affected by armed conflict brought about by separatist rebel groups and bandits. Travellers are not targets but can find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Petty theft is a common irritant in central Dakar. Rebel activity has moved from southern to northern Casamance. Provided that commonsense and caution are exercised when travelling through the region, travel should be uneventful, but it's best to keep as well-informed of the latest events as possible. Full country name: Republic of Senegal Area: 196,190 sq km

However, the envisaged integration of the two countries was never carried out, and the union was dissolved in 1989. Despite peace talks, a southern separatist group sporadically has clashed with government forces since 1982. Senegal has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping. Country Info Senegal Introduction Senegal General Data Senegal Maps Senegal Culture ... Senegal Time and Date Senegal Culture Back to Top Both the rhythm of life in Senegal and the Senegalese mentality have evolved over a long period of time in a setting that was unacquainted with technology in the Western sense of the word. The attitudes of Senegalese in their relations with nature are consequently different from those of Europeans in general. Fear, magic, and collectivism are dominant in traditional Senegalese life. Writing is absent or constitutes at best the prerogative of no more than the few. The cultural heritage is preserved in oral tradition, of which the guardians have been the most experienced, that is to say the oldest, men. Society thus forms a hierarchy, at the summit of which stand the oldest people. Art, sculpture, music, and dance remain typically Senegalese in expression. Sculpture is characterized by abstraction and by the ideogram; a sculptured gazelle, for example, may be represented solely by its horns and its neck, while an elephant may be represented only by the immense fan formed by its ears and its trunk. The Senegalese artist thus neglects the material aspect in order to give free rein to ideas and to feelings. Similarly, in the absence of written music, the imagination of the musician is released. Without falling into the realm of fantasy, the griot (a West African troubadour and historian) recites poems or tells stories of warrior deeds, drawing upon his own sources of inspiration. Both dance and music owe a great deal to improvisation, which, combined with rhythm, produces an intense effect upon the entire community.
