The race to create new revenue streams from broadband digital services is now well and truly on, with cable, satellite and terrestrial TV service providers all intent on getting a slice of the action. Cable operators, with an installed broadband connection to their subscribers that can easily be made bi-directional, clearly have an advantage on delivering interactive services. Satellite and terrestrial broadcasters, on the other hand, despite the fact that they currently lack a fully integrated return channel, have the advantage of wide geographical coverage and lower infrastructure costs. Although different service providers will come up with different solutions to deliver interactivity, one thing is certain. The interactive services that they provide will be influenced by much of what is happening on the Internet, both in terms of the technology employed and the business models adopted.
Internet on TV is not the plain old Internet
Most service providers and MSOs in the cable TV business, and even some satellite broadcasters such as BSkyB, subsidize new subscribers by supplying them with a 'free' set-top box that is configured to operate with their particular broadcast system. Operators ultimately recover the initial cost of the box over a period of time through their monthly subscription charges. With limited revenue streams available to recover the subsidy, this historically meant keeping the cost of the box as low as possible. As a result, existing set-top boxes are usually limited in terms of their memory capacity and processing power compared to a typical Internet-enabled PC.
