PROGRAM EVOLUTION /
GENETIC PROGRAMMING
Genetic Programming (GP) is a special instance of the broader and older field of Program Evolution . GP was apparently invented by Nichael Cramer in 1985. He used Holland's Genetic Algorithms to evolve both tree-structured and string-based computer programs: A Representation for the Adaptive Generation of Simple Sequential Programs, Proc. of an Intl. Conf. on Genetic Algorithms and their Applications, Carnegie-Mellon University, July 24-26, 1985. If you are writing about GP: this is THE paper to cite! (Or do you happen to know of an earlier GP paper?) Schmidhuber was not aware of Cramer's work when he was an undergrad student and re-invented GP and in 1987 published this work (world's 2nd paper on GP) on a PROLOG-based GP system directly operating on variable-length code [1]. The system was applied to simple tasks including the "lawnmower problem", later also studied by Koza (1994), who apparently re-re-invented GP around 1989 (there even is a 1990 GP patent despite all the prior art). Pages 7-13 of ref [2] are devoted to a more ambitious self-improving GP approach that recursively applies metalevel GP (first introduced here) to the task of finding better program-modifying programs on lower levels - the goal was to use GP for improving GP.

Community Scala Overview: Explicitly Typed Self References When developing extensible software it is sometimes handy to declare the type of the value this explicitly. To motivate this, we will derive a small extensible representation of a graph data structure in Scala. Here is an interface describing graphs: trait type Edge; type trait def def nodes: List[Node]; def edges: List[Edge]; def Graphs consist of a list of nodes and edges where both the node and the edge type are left abstract. The use of abstract types allows implementations of trait Graph to provide their own concrete classes for nodes and edges. Furthermore, there is a method addNode for adding new nodes to a graph. Nodes are connected using method connectWith A possible implementation of trait Graph is given in the next program: abstract class DirectedGraph extends type class def from = origin; def class NodeImpl extends def val edge = newEdge( this protected def newNode: Node; protected def newEdge(from: Node, to: Node): Edge;

http://blog.simon-cozens.org/6738.html
Tue, 18 May 2004 "Pair" programming I'm not the kind of person who can focus on one task at a time. I need to have a few things going on at once that I can dip into. What's interesting is that the multiple projects always somehow tend to synergise. I noticed this first when I was writing songs; I'd write two very distinct songs, but something would be common between them, whether it's a rhythm or an interesting chord change or an effect setting or orchestration, to the extent that I think of most of my recent songs as arranged in pairs. Sometimes my programming projects are paired too. Now I'm working on both Email::Store and Feuilleton at the same time, I'm finding odd similarities between them. Both should run behind Maypole, and both should consist of a very small core that can be extended by plugin modules relating to additional database tables. So Feuilleton will just grab a load of posts from a data source, and leave it to decorator classes to handle the comments, filter the comments, handle trackbacks, rewrite links to a redirector, and so on. Maybe comments and trackbacks won't actually be part of the core, but will be additional modules which relate to new database tables. Email::Store 's main store method, similarly, will consist of a tiny core which inserts a row in a database table containing an RFC2822 message; it then calls out to a bunch of other classes to munge that message and collect any additional data for their own tables that they want from it. Same idea.

The Quine Page
One day, several years ago, I came across an article in an old Byte on "self-reproducing programs". I was a curious lad, and looked to see what the article was about. It said, "Listing 1 is a C program which duplicates itself. When the program is run it produces (on the standard output) a file containing an exact copy of its own source code". I was hooked immediatelythese guys must be geniuses! I copied the article at once, and tried to figure it out, but I didn't know C at the time. Soon after, I found another article, this one in Creative Computing. It had listings in BASIC, and I was ecstatic. I soon realized that anyone could write self-reproducing programs, and made a few in BASIC, Pascal, and Forth.
Later that year I finally got a PC, and quickly forgot about the programs I had written on my old TI-994/A. Then, last year, as I was skimming through the Jargon file, I saw an entry I had not noticed before: quine kwi:n n. / [from the name of the logician Willard van Orman Quine, via Douglas Hofstadter] A program that generates a copy of its own source text as its complete output. Devising the shortest possible quine in some given programming language is a common hackish amusement. Here is one classic quine: ((lambda (x) (list x (list (quote quote) x))) (quote (lambda (x) (list x (list (quote quote) x))))) This one works in LISP or Scheme. It's relatively easy to write quines in other languages such as Postscript which readily handle programs as data; much harder (and thus more challenging!) in languages like C which do not. Here is a classic C quine for ASCII machines:

The changing employment landscape and the need for more flexibility in employment has led many to explore self employment or entrepreneurial opportunities. Being self employed is an option persons with disabilities may want to consider. The following success stories feature entrepreneurs with disabilities whose businesses have proven to be profitable. Travel Headquarters, Inc. Injured at age 16 from a gunshot wound, Heidi VanArnem was paralyzed from the neck down. She completed high school, college and law school. Not wishing to pursue a career in law, she tried unsuccessfully to find a job. Discouraged with employers' reactions to her disability, she launched a travel business in 1989 in Birmington, MI. Travel Headquarters, Inc., has grown from a one-person to a six-person operation and grosses $1.5 million in sales annually. In addition to successfully managing the travel arrangements for major events, the business specializes in making travel arrangements for people with disabilities.

http://www.lsi.usp.br/~jecel/tutorial.html
"Hail, friend!"
Startled by the booming voice behind you, you turn around and see a tall man coming up the steep hillside. His careless atire, the flowing beard and long, unruly hair remind you of some hacker straight out of a 70s computer lab. From their color, almost entirely white with just a few streaks of gray here and there, a hippie from the mid 60s would seem more likely. "What brings you out this far?", he asks. "You want an autograph from Merlin, no doubt", he ventures. "A strange custom, this is, but I have known many far worse. And I suppose it is a fitting one for this excentric age." He plucks a large, green leaf from a nearby tree and with his bare finger scribbles a beautiful design on it. As he hands it to you, the newly formed golden letters seem to shine with a light of their own. When you hesitate to reach out for the leaf he looks at you closely for the first time. "Ah! So I am mistaken this time, am I? Good! It is the Great Adventure that you seek - the knowledge of Self!" he exclaims excitedly. "I should have known from the start. Though few have yet sought the marvelous path, I foresee that many soon will." "Alas! This is not the best time in which to start" he says, shaking his head sadly. "Every two hundred years I must clean out my cave entirely lest the dust of the centuries ruin the delicate operations of my equipment. This is one of those occasions."

Ordinary computers are rather simple devices, logically speaking. They cannot learn and they have to plow through large problems one step at a time.
Two largely experimental methods of computing neural networks and quantum computing go beyond these limitations by mimicking biological brains, and exploiting the quirks of quantum physics, respectively.
A team of researchers at Wichita State University is aiming to combine the two techniques in order to use neural networks' proven capacity for learning to help realize quantum computing's potential to solve astronomically large problems. The researchers made a simulation of a quantum neural network and used it to show how the theoretical devices could calculate the quantum mechanical property of entanglement. Calculating entanglement was an unsolved problem in field of quantum computing, said Elizabeth Behrman, an associate professor of physics at Wichita State University Entanglement is one of the weirder traits of quantum physics. When a subatomic particle or atom is isolated from the environment and cannot be observed, it enters into the quantum mechanical state of superposition, meaning it is in some mixture of all possible states. For example, a particle can spin in one of two directions, up or down. In superposition, however, the particle spins in some mixture of both directions at the same time.
