T ips for teachers, parents and kids on how to live "greener" everyday lives. Contact me at Teachgreen@aol.com Hi! Thanks for stopping by. Every month, I will answer your questions on how to bring environmental studies into the classroom, how to deepen our environmental awareness and how to live more "green". I'll suggest seasonal activities that can help our children get closer to nature and give suggestions on how to encourage them to be loving caretakers of our great planet earth. I want to encourage our children (and ourselves) to fall in love with nature. When you love something, you will take care of it. I look forward to hearing from teachers and parents about environmental projects that you've done that have been successful. E-mail me at Teachgreen@AOL.com and I'll share with others what you are doing. Also, I want to hear from Kids! E-mail your poems and stories about nature, ecology and our great Planet Earth, to Teachgreen@aol.com and I will share your feelings with other kids in the Earth Patrol Kids section at the end of this site. In my last column , I addressed the reasons why we should consider choosing organic foods. Following is an article in which I asked this question of Meryl Streep.

With the mission of promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character, Eagle's Nest is an experiential outdoor education foundation coordinating the Eagle's Nest Camp for boys and girls (celebrating more than seventy-five years) and the Outdoor Academy of the Southern Appalachians, a semester school for tenth graders. This school-away-from-school focuses on environmental education, regional studies, and the arts, and centers students and faculty in a close community life. Pure and simple, the Eagle's Nest Foundation is about teaching and nurturing.
Being responsible to the community is at the heart of life at ENF. Consequently, attitude is the most important attribute at Eagle's Nest, that is, a willingness to be a jack-of-all-trades, have patience and love of children, a sense of goodwill and support of others, and a desire to develop one's own potential. It is a place that allows one to reap his or her own rewards. What You'll Be Doing: There are two facets to staffing opportunities at ENF: Camp Staff Members teach activities in the arts, music, and drama (batik, West African drum and dance, pottery, musical instrument making and raku not your everyday arts and crafts classes!), wilderness (white-water canoeing on a handful of rivers, rock climbing and backpacking), and athletics (emphasizing skill and teamwork, not competition). Staff members also double as trip leaders, where they develop, plan and set goals for the courses; then take teenagers on intense wilderness experiences, such as hiking on the Appalachian Trail, mountain biking the Continental Divide Trail in Montana, service and cultural exchange projects in Mexico, and paddling the chilly waters of northern Ontario.

Adopt a Tree and Teach the Young
ISU Forestry Extension
When living in a city or town we often think the closest place to enjoy nature is at a county or state park, and we often forget that just out the back door or down the street there is an opportunity for learning about and enjoying the environment. That place is your backyard or surrounding neighborhood. One of the best ways to learn about nature and gain respect for it, is to actually take the time to observe changes as they occur. We often use the changes in plants in our own backyard to help anticipate upcoming seasonal weather changes. For example, as the tree buds begin swelling and flowers begin blooming we know spring has started and summer is on the way. Also, as the leaves of trees change to brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, and purple we know the days are becoming shorter and colder and winter isn't far behind. A great way to allow children the opportunity to learn about plants such as trees is to have them actually adopt a tree or group of trees and keep a "tree log" or diary with information about their adopted tree or trees. This activity can be started with children as young as four years old and can be continued throughout their grade school years and further if interest continues. Anyone can participate in this type of activity, whether they have a backyard or not. If you do not have a tree where you live, find one in your neighborhood, local park, school, or any general public area.

Prizes will be awarded in each of these categories, as well as special awards will be made possible by several generous donors. This show will be the largest of its kind in the North Slope. The Art Show will feature all new works each year, and will be held annually from the second Sunday in June through the second Sunday in August. Visitors and art collectors from across the U.S. and from other countries will be attracted to the show each year. All pieces in the annual art show will be for sale, providing an excellent market for Iñupiat artist. Community Programs
Community programs will be listed in our calendar. The community and visitors should look for Iñupiat celebrations. The Family Explorations series will present programs usually on a monthly basis that are designed to allow children and their adult family members an opportunity to creatively explore topics related to Iñupiat art, history and natural sciences. In addition, every changing exhibition at the IHC will be supplemented with special programs organized and presented by IHC staff.

From Integration to Actualization BELINDA GIMBERT AND CARLA ZEMBAL-SAUL
The Pennsylvania State University BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In their review of literature on information technology and teacher education, Willis and Mehlinger (1996) asserted, “Most preservice teachers know very little about effective use of technology in education and leaders believe there is a pressing need to substantially increase the amount and quality of instruction teachers receive about technology” (p. 978). This is not surprising given that the United States Office of Technology Assessment (U.S. Congress, 1995) report found that technology was not a central component of teacher preparation programs in most colleges of education. A summary of the key findings states, “Most technology instruction in colleges of education is teaching about technology as a separate subject, not teaching with technology across the curriculum. Seldom are students asked to create lessons using technologies or practice teaching with technological tools” (p. 165). Clearly there is a need to integrate technology into teacher preparation. PROGRAM CONTEXT Penn State elementary education majors in their final year of preparation are selected to complete the yearlong internship program through an extensive application and interview process in which mentor teachers play a major role. Interns agree to begin the experience during the second week in August with an intensive two-week, campus-based preparation experience, termed “Jump Start.” Interns then join their mentors for orientation, classroom preparation for the school year, and district meetings. At this point, interns abandon the university calendar to teach alongside their mentors.
