ne area our world in general and our churches as well, seem to be struggling in is to help encourage and support our families as they strive to build strong, spiritually successful families. As we stand on the verge of a new millennium, let's commit to help our families do just that. We need strong, happy families - it just takes some work and commitment, but is extremely well worth the work. The following resources and ideas are ones for families to utilize together to help them begin or continue to build strong, happy families who love God! It is so easy to get busy with our lives, our jobs, with just the business of life and while our children absolutely need to hear that we love them by what we say and how we say it, they also need to feel and see that we love them by spending time with them. There are very few, if any parents who genuinely do not want to be good parents. There are, however; many parents who lack good, solid parenting skills. It has been said, to drive you have to take drivers ed., to teach you have to take teacher training, even to be a cashier you have to take training. But to be a parent, you just have to have a baby. Parenting skills do not necessarily come naturally, so one of the best things we can do to support our families in our churches and even reach out to parents in the community, is to provide parenting classes and resources. I would like to encourage churches to plan, promote and provide parenting classes to their parents in this coming year.

140.01 PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS
The county department of social services is required to provide a sufficient number of qualified employees necessary to assure that prompt action is taken on all applications. County employees used to certify households for participation in the Food Stamp Program must meet the standards set by State Personnel in the certification of applicants for benefits under the federally aided public assistance programs. Only qualified county employees may conduct the interview of applicant households and determine the household's eligibility or ineligibility and the level of assistance. Exceptions to the use of State approved personnel in the interview and certification process are made for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) households and disaster victims. Program discrepancies tied to staff shortages include such areas as applications pending over allowable time standards, incomplete verifications, omissions on forms, failure to comply with the work registration requirement, information already available in the case file, etc. Corrective action is needed in many areas of program operations but none is as important as this single area. An adequate number of trained staff is required so that each case is assured of receiving program expertise and reducing program discrepancies.

Adopt a Tree and Teach the Young
ISU Forestry Extension
When living in a city or town we often think the closest place to enjoy nature is at a county or state park, and we often forget that just out the back door or down the street there is an opportunity for learning about and enjoying the environment. That place is your backyard or surrounding neighborhood. One of the best ways to learn about nature and gain respect for it, is to actually take the time to observe changes as they occur. We often use the changes in plants in our own backyard to help anticipate upcoming seasonal weather changes. For example, as the tree buds begin swelling and flowers begin blooming we know spring has started and summer is on the way. Also, as the leaves of trees change to brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, and purple we know the days are becoming shorter and colder and winter isn't far behind. A great way to allow children the opportunity to learn about plants such as trees is to have them actually adopt a tree or group of trees and keep a "tree log" or diary with information about their adopted tree or trees. This activity can be started with children as young as four years old and can be continued throughout their grade school years and further if interest continues. Anyone can participate in this type of activity, whether they have a backyard or not. If you do not have a tree where you live, find one in your neighborhood, local park, school, or any general public area.

Chinese and Buddhist influences are also prevalent in Japanese art. Since the mid-19th century, contemporary Japanese art has been partially defined by the use of Western techniques, although many works today still reflect a distinctly Japanese style. Most of traditional Japanese art falls into one of the following categories: painting (including ukiyo-e), sculpture, or ceramics. (1) Painting Traditional Japanese painting utilizes a variety of media, such as horizontal and hanging scrolls, fans, walls, and screens. Images of imperial courts, Buddhist institutions, and seasonal depictions of nature are popular themes. Two examples of distinctive styles of painting are suibokuga, or ink painting, in which artists use black ink to paint monochromatic images based on the Zen spirit, and Shoheiga, developed in the late 16th century, in which artists paint designs onto screens or walls. Traditionally, background of shoheiga was covered with gold-leaf or gold dust, but this practice has become less prevalent today.

Teach Them the Moral Way of Living:
The Meeting of Huron Sexuality and European Religion
By Mary C. Mees
The Huron did not place great importance on the difference between married and not married. They encouraged various stages of experimentation and growing commitment. Males had the liberty of giving themselves to evil from their earliest years, while females prostituted themselves as early as they could, and fathers and mothers were panderers for their own daughters. Jesuit Relations
, there is an account that interprets the freedom in marriage: Sexuality played various other roles in Huron society outside of premarital and marital relations. Sex was often used in curing rituals. In one particular ritual, andacwander , any ill person could call for a number of young people to come and have sexual relations in his or her cabin. Andacwander was described in great detail by Gabriel Sagard, a Recollect who lived among the Huron between 1623 and 1624: The young also might be asked to simply dance naked in front of the sick. Sagard described another practice that took place during these dances, but it can be inferred that this was not a frequent occurrence: Along with observing the power of sexuality in regards to healing, the Huron viewed periods of abstinence as equally important. The Jesuit Relations makes an account of this:

A General Discussion of Feather Plucking
Held by Dianalee Deter at Parrot Festival '99
and written by Shelly Lane
First, Take The Bird To A Vet
When a parrot first begins pulling or mutilating its feathers, Dianalee strongly believes the bird should immediately be taken to a qualified avian veterinarian for a complete work-up, including a CBC, to rule out any possible medical problems. I have to agree. There are medical causes of feather plucking and with the tests that are available, they are the easiest causes to determine. It just makes sense to go this route first.
Humidity
Regular bathing is necessary for feather health, and a bird that has dirty feathers and/or dry itchy skin is more prone to plucking. This is especially true in areas of the country that experience a lack of humidity. Remember that in many areas, lack of humidity is a seasonal problem so if your bird tends to pluck only at certain times of the year, this is a cause you might want to consider. Frequent showers or baths may help alleviate or prevent feather disorder behaviors in parrots, especially if you live in an area where lack of humidity in the air is an issue. Using a humidifier during the dry times of the year may also help.
