From Integration to Actualization BELINDA GIMBERT AND CARLA ZEMBAL-SAUL
The Pennsylvania State University BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In their review of literature on information technology and teacher education, Willis and Mehlinger (1996) asserted, “Most preservice teachers know very little about effective use of technology in education and leaders believe there is a pressing need to substantially increase the amount and quality of instruction teachers receive about technology” (p. 978). This is not surprising given that the United States Office of Technology Assessment (U.S. Congress, 1995) report found that technology was not a central component of teacher preparation programs in most colleges of education. A summary of the key findings states, “Most technology instruction in colleges of education is teaching about technology as a separate subject, not teaching with technology across the curriculum. Seldom are students asked to create lessons using technologies or practice teaching with technological tools” (p. 165). Clearly there is a need to integrate technology into teacher preparation. PROGRAM CONTEXT Penn State elementary education majors in their final year of preparation are selected to complete the yearlong internship program through an extensive application and interview process in which mentor teachers play a major role. Interns agree to begin the experience during the second week in August with an intensive two-week, campus-based preparation experience, termed “Jump Start.” Interns then join their mentors for orientation, classroom preparation for the school year, and district meetings. At this point, interns abandon the university calendar to teach alongside their mentors.

Housing for Teachers in Korea
Key Money Housing
Housing Bonds Utility Costs What you need to find out from your employer The majority of teaching contracts include a rent free furnished apartment. This will usually consist of your own single studio apartment with one bedroom, or a 2-3 bedroom apartment or villa shared with other foreign teachers from your school. Some apartments are in high-rise tower blocks and some may even be in office buildings. The quality of teacher's housing varies, but usually it's very acceptable. A number of teachers have even mentioned to us that compared to their old house or flat from university days it could even be classified as luxurious! Your housing should be located within walking distance of your place of employment. Top of Page Be prepared for a house/apartment that is structured for seasonal changes. For instance, under floor heating systems (ondol) for winter and air conditioning or fans for summer. Many houses actually have 3 levels of windows that can act as double-glazing. You may even find you get a number of metal bars on your windows like a prison cell. Once again this is totally common in Korea and is seen as security. The fact that you cannot escape from this barred window in an emergency does not seem to have entered the builder's minds! We have started recommending that it is a good idea to take with you a battery fire alarm (common in NZ homes) and install it in your kitchen/lounge area in Korea. We certainly do not know of any 'near miss' stories and do not want to scare anyone BUT the concept of having a smoke alarm in a house is not yet known of in Korea.

Look like fun? Colorado employs more ski resort workers than any other state. Most of the employers in our seasonal jobs section fall into the broad "resort jobs" category. These employers offer the best opportunities for working in beautiful locations all over the country, and most resorts have a job for almost anyone - regardless of work history of experience. In fact, many seasonal resort workers are students or recent graduates. Resorts generally offer fair pay and above average benefits, including free or heavily discounted food and lodging. You also get the advantage of having time off to enjoy your surroundings since employers typically schedule 40 hour work weeks. On-the-job training opportunities also abound for those with little work experience. The descriptions below give you a general idea of the types jobs available. Remember, however, that each employer may have other types of positions - for example, ski resorts and guest ranches have over a dozen types of specialty jobs.

It may be reached by driving approximately 3.5 miles on Rt. 460 west of Blacksburg, to Rt.621 and taking a left turn onto the forest service road leading to the Upper and Lower Parking areas. The pond is man made and maintained by an earthen dam on its western end. It drains second growth mixed hardwood forests watershed area The road to the pond ends in a lower small parking area blocked on the pond side by a gate. A short walk on the dirt road behind the gate or on the trail at the west side of the parking lot leads to the pond. The trails around the pond are gravel covered and easy hiking. There are several side trails through the surrounding forest. These side trails vary in difficulty and are not gravel covered. There are several picnic tables and grills available. There is no potable running water available, but pit toilet facilities are available. Maps are available using the resources at this site or at the United States Forest Service office in Blacksburg. One may also approach the Pond from the Upper Lot by following Horse Nettle Trail to the east or Poverty Creek Trail to the west. In either case, one should be sure to make the appropriate turns on these trails, as they are not direct routes to the Pond. SOME POSSIBLE OBJECTIVES (There are many, see the Activities Links)
