General Information
The Courage To Teach (CTT) program, based on the work of Parker Palmer, is a series of quarterly retreats for the personal and professional renewal of teachers, administrators, and counselors in public schools and higher education. Courage To Teach retreats focus neither on “technique” nor on curricular reform but on renewing the inner lives of professionals in education. Each retreat follows a seasonal theme, using the rich metaphors of the seasons as a way of exploring vocational and life questions. In large-group, small-group and solitary settings, concepts of teacher formation and “the heart of a teacher” are explored, making use of personal stories, reflections on classroom practice, and insights from poets, storytellers, and various wisdom traditions. In August of 2003, Bellarmine’s second group of faculty, administrators and community friends will have completed the two year CTT commitment to formation work. With the facilitation and guidance of Dr. Sally Hare and our current (native) facilitator, Marian Smith, twenty-eight members of the Bellarmine learning community will have completed CTT. Across the country, no other institution of higher education can boast of this richness.

If you are reading this, then you are considering working at camp as one of your employment options. There are many great choices out there and of course, we think working at Camp Manitou is the best one. If you have never worked at a camp before, it can be a confusing option, especially when comparing it to a more typical city job. It is easy to understand why working at camp can be fun and the experience of a lifetime. But summer camp can also be more then that and there are tremendous benefits that you may not have considered when looking at your future full time employment or lifelong decisions. We hope to tell you a little bit about working at Manitou, so that you can make the most educated choice possible. Camp Manitou was founded in 1959 and has always been known for its tradition of sports and arts programming for campers aged 7 to 16. Since its new ownership in 1999, Manitou has developed a special reputation, continuing as a unique program on the Canadian camping scene. Manitou still offers both the quality instruction that you may find at a specialty camp, as well as all of the general fun, friendship, spirit and personal growth that come from a more general camp program. Each summer, we host campers and staff from around the world. Most are from North America, but on average our campers and staff represent more then 15 countries worldwide from almost every continent! Our camp generally holds about 390 campers and 150 staff, meaning a large and truly diverse summer community.

After years of high school students who couldn't count, keep the beat or sing on pitch, I finally get to develop these skills in the students at the age these skills should be learned. I get to influence students' tastes in music before adolescence. It is exciting to share the music of Copland, Sravinsky, Grainger and Villa Lobos as well as the music of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. The voice being an instrument, we sing songs to improve that instrument. We also sing pitch names and solfege. To help me in this, I make good use of "Share the Music" with the CDs. Being a baritone, students have a difficult time singing by only trying to match my voice. These CDs have good student choirs for my students to match pitch. I sing, too, but the CDs definately model good student vocal production. Steal songs from the classroom teachers. Every primary master teacher has songs for every occasion, especially seasonal songs. Some of these jewels are hidden in 20 year old files with other ditto papers.

DANCE is enjoyed in many forms, whether as a leisure activity or as a career . This page seeks to deal primarily with careers in dance. Dance activity itself can be divided into two main categories: theatre dance and social dance. Theatre dance includes ballet, modern and contemporary dance, jazz dance tap etc. Social dance includes ballroom dance, folk dance and disco. There are no hard and fast divisions between the different forms. The profession of dancing can be divided into two main branches: performing and teaching. There are many related areas of work with opportunities for choreographers, notators, dance administrators, dance animateurs, dance (movement) therapists and dance historians and critics. There are also the more peripheral areas of work with opportunities for theatre technicians, costume and scenic designers, wardrobe and property personnel, lighting experts, musicians, etc.

Performing Those wishing to be performers of many forms of western dance have often had early ballet training and may specialise in ballet and/or one or more other forms of theatre dance.
