Poor queries return poor results; good queries return great results. Contrary to the hype surrounding "intelligent agents" and "artificial intelligence," the fact remains that search results are only as good as the query you pose and how you search. There is no silver bullet. There are very effective ways to "structure" a query and use special operators to target the results you seek. Absent these techniques, you will spend endless hours looking at useless documents that do not contain the information you want. Or you will give up in frustration after search-click-download-reviewing long lists of documents before you find what you want. This tutorial is organized to proceed from the basics to more advanced topics. It has 12 parts containing 51 topics and describes the search services, available operators, and the extremely important information on how to compose your queries. Simple to follow examples are presented in each topic. We've written it to be a one-stop reference. Don't feel you need to work through all of the topics in one sitting. But, if you do take the time to work through this material, we guarantee you'll reap big dividends in faster and more accurate results. And, you will be on your way to earning the title of an Internet "Power Searcher."

Abstract:
With the explosive growth of the World-Wide Web, it is becoming increasingly difficult for users to collect and analyze Web pages that are relevant to a particular topic. To address this problem we are developing WTMS, a system for Web Topic Management. In this paper we explain how the WTMS crawler efficiently collects Web pages for a topic. We also introduce the user interface of the system that integrates several techniques for analyzing the collection. Moreover, we present the various views of the interface that allow navigation through the information space. We highlight several examples to show how the system enables the user to gain useful insights about the collection.

That achievement might seem negligible, except for one thing: Each of those 1600 sites is about beer. So if you seek a home brew club in Portland, Oregon, Beersite should be your search site of first resort.

Getting Started on the Internet
Think carefully about what you are looking for before you start.
  • Is your topic specific or broad?
  • Are you looking for a general introduction to a subject or for one specific

These decisions will influence your choice of search tool. This is important, as no single search tool is right for every type of Internet search. Subject directories

Abstract
mining topic-specific knowledge on the Web . Our goal is to help people learn in-depth knowledge of a topic systematically on the Web. The proposed techniques first identify those sub-topics or salient concepts of the topic, and then find and organize those informative pages, containing definitions and descriptions of the topic and sub-topics, just like those in a book. Experimental results using 28 topics show that the proposed techniques are highly effective.

are edited and organized by humans, and all websites are listed in a hierarchy, grouped according to their topic, and sub topics are listed within topics. Search engines' databases have no such structure, which would help to focus in on a topic. Many words and phrases have multiple meanings, and this is not a problem for directories, but it is for search engines. Homer was a Greek writer and is also a character on The Simpsons . To solve this problem, many search engines are enhanced by also using a directory. For example, a search for Homer on Google will have two categories listed, Homer the Greek and Homer Simpson (I have shortened the directory folder names). However, when you browse these categories, you are just using a directory and have lost the benefits of a search engine. The solution to all this, is topic clustering.

What Makes a Good Meta Search Engine?

The Meta Searching Trend

What are Meta Search Engines?
True meta search tools do not have their own database. They send your query to several search engines or directories at once, and consolidate all the results onto the same page. The point is to save time by using several search engines at the same time, helping you find obscure items. The term "meta search engine" is often misused. Some tools which do not consolidate results, but just stitch together results pages from various search tools are not meta search engines. Even websites similar to Fagan Finder have been called meta search engines, however they are not. How do Meta Search Engines Work?
Meta search engines will perform your search on each of the sources they include. They will go to the results pages, and parse (extract) the results from them. They record all this, and then manipulate this data however they want, such as removing duplicates. After they have processed the results, they create an HTML page with them listed, which is what you see. What Makes a Good Meta Search Engine?

When searching for a topic with precise descriptive terms, use a large international search engine. Always place the Boolean symbol before each search word (like this: ) to insist all words appear in the results. Quotes keep words together ( ). These two simple steps dramatically improve results. Many people in today's high tech world use the Internet as a tool to find or sell any specific product, service or information. One person can be a webmaster and a consumer at the same time. Let's talk about how your Internet search affects both categories of Internet users: webmasters, who offer services, products or information and consumers, who are just looking for those services, products or information. 90% of Internet users use major search engines and directories for Internet searches. Lets break the topic into two major categories of Internet users - webmasters and users. WEBMASTERS AND SEARCH ENGINES
The good thing about search engines is that they are big. They have huge traffic. They have big databases with millions of links. If you can come up on top of the search result, then you are a winner. If you cannot, well, it does not matter. I am not going to start on big companies with millions of dollars of marketing budget. I will talk about small businesses that represent 95% of e-commerce today. The thing that is not so good about search engines is that your position in search results depends on many factors. It is not a secret that it is not easy to get your site listed on top of major search engines. The right keyword is what you gets you there. Note that there is only one or two keywords which place your site high on the list. If a user types this word along with any other word your site may be listed anywhere between 1,000 and 10,000 search results or, what is even worse, you may not even get into the search result at all. Actually, both results do not matter for you anyway, because we all know that the listing after the first 100 positions does not affect your traffic.

Personal Search Crawlers
No search engine farm will ever be able to index the entire web, let alone cache it, as Google offers. The sheer growth of the web makes it very hard for search engines to keep up, while the most interesting content is often the newest information and is often not indexed yet. "Traditional search engines like Altavista or Excite don't even bother to fully index such sites both because of the magnitude of the information store and of the rate of change of the information stored within the pages. As such search engines seem to index the portion of the web site they find most relevant or useful to the community as a whole." Current web search engines actually find excellent starting points, but the user is left with the mind-numbing task of clicking away, and while the information they are looking for is a mere 19 clicks away , they're never going to get there. While it would be nice to have a Big Fat Webserver (BFW) be at the ready to answer all my query needs, it's not going to happen because BFW's have as their foundation a crawler that suffers from the same problem of degraded performance with network growth. Re/searchers have evolved their own strategies for their specific tasks. They have selected the key sites that pertain to their job/task, and they start crawling from there. They exploit the structure of these sites, be they topic specific search sites or industry specific content sites.

Look It Up! is a seven-part series of task cards designed to help students develop reference skills needed in an information intensive society. Great Searching on the Internet focuses on the 3 successful electronic search methods as well as citing Internet resources when using them in research reports. Prerequisite Skills:
Use the Browser Skills Checklist in advance of beginning this segment. Students need to be comfortable browsing the internet before they can move to successful searching. Identify and explain the Anatomy of a URL Searching with Students:
Understand that the goal of this segment of the Look It Up! series is designed specifically to teach students how to search for information on the Internet. Before using Internet search engines in the classroom, however, you should consider your purpose. Internet searching can be very time consuming. If the educational goal of your lesson is strictly based on gathering content, then you should create a front-end environment which directs your students to specific websites where they can simply gather data. However, students can gain many valuable skills when conducting searches themselves - critical thinking, logic, and information filtering - are only a few examples. Using search engines effectively becomes critical throughout the academic experience. And this segment helps students become critical thinkers and effective researchers.
