Introduction to Child-Safe Searching
Why is safe searching needed?
The Internet contains a vast amount of resources, making it an excellent research tool for kids. However, there's a lot of inappropriate material on the web. This material includes drug and hate-related content, violence and lots and lots of pornography. Not what an average parent wants their kids to research. To help parents and educators, various tools have been created to filter out "the dirt". This section is designed to give an overview of safe searching and provide specifics about available defense methods, i.e. tools, kids' browsers and specialized and filtered search engines. Searching with Kids Sit down with your child, try a search at a few of these sites, then bookmark your favorites. Each of these search sites attempts to link only to safe sites, but adult supervision is still the most important key to using the Internet with children. Yahooligans! is a searchable, browsable index of the Internet designed for Web surfers ages 7 to 12. Only sites judged appropriate for this age group are chosen. Ask Jeeves allows kids to ask complete questions using plain English. Sites are filtered using SurfWatch to block access to many inappropriate Web sites. KidsClick is a portal (a collection of sites grouped by subject or topic.) This is the first place I go to find elementary school curriculum sites. Searches can be refined by reading level and amount of graphics. The Smart Zone is a very selective catalog of educational sites gathered and monitored for safety by Ed View. Searches can be refined by choosing elementary, middle or high school. AltaVista, a powerful adult search engine, has a "Family Safe Search" that allows filtered Web searching. Once you have set this capability from your computer a password is required to conduct non-filtered searches.

Internet Safety and Safe Surfing for Kids
Many parents are faced with the problem of having children who are far more knowledgeable about computers and the internet that they are. So how can these parents protect their children from all of the dangers that are lurking on the world wide web? Knowledge is the key. I hope to teach you the facts you need to know to protect your kids from stumbling across pornography, child molesters, hate groups, and all the other dangers available on the internet. Internet Safety Tips
Kids: Never give out personal information - not even what school you go to.
Kids: Never arrange to meet someone in person that you've chatted with online.
Kids: Never give out your password to anyone except your parents - not even your best friend.
Kids: Remember - that kid you are chatting with might really be an older man pretending to be a child.

"Safe" Search Engines The following Gateways and Search Engines are filtered to eliminate as many of the objectionable or inappropriate websites as possible.
However, there are still some basic facts you need to know:

    1. At school, you must have a District A.U.P. letter signed by your parents and given to your teacher in order to be allowed to use any of the search engines listed below. 2. At school, you must ALWAYS have a designated "Internet Supervision Teacher" in the room with you when you are on the Internet. 2. It is always YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to choose appropriate sites.
No filtering device is perfect! 3. If you happen upon an inappropriate device, you must:
    (a) immediately click the back button
    (b) immediately notify the teacher on duty . 4. Filtered sites are checked but the sites that they link to may not be. This does not mean that they are inappropriate, just that they may not have been reviewed. Check with your teacher to see if you are allowed to go more than one link deep. If you do not know what "more than one link" means, ask your teacher BEFORE going onto one of the sites below! With that in mind... ENJOY searching and surfing!
