14.6 Searching Multiple Sites Concurrently
Our previous example showed how to parse a single site's search results and present them in our own format. This gave us the basics of a proxy or portal site. We can expand this to search multiple sites simultaneously with . The following example is a condensed version of our Meta-search demo Run this example Download the source This script is an expanded version of our previous example. The first function sets up several parallel variables with site-dependent information. For each site, we need to know:
  • Its raw search URL ( $rawurls
  • Its "vanilla" site name ( $names
  • A schema to parse its data ( $schemas
The function is modified from our previous example. Since we have several sites to search with different form variables for each, we can't use . Instead, we use and to insert the user's query into our raw search URLs' query strings, giving us $fetchurls Now we're ready for the actual search. We call with the PARALLEL flag to tell it we're fetching multiple URLs simultaneously. will start retrieving every URL in $fetchurls at once.

1. INTRODUCTION
In this paper, we present the construction of the Chinese-English cross-lingual concept space by using Hopfield network based on parallel corpora. Such concept space is important for solving vocabulary difference problem in cross-lingual information retrieval. Since our approach is developed based on the dynamic parallel corpora extracted from the World Wide Web and the information on the Web is frequently updated, the concept space generated can identify unknown terms that do not appear in dictionaries.

A Search Quick Reference
What is a Search Tool? A search tool is a computer program that performs searches to access Web sites and retrieve information. Each search tool is owned by a single entity, such as a person, a company, or an organization, which operates it from a master computer. When you use a search tool, your request travels to the tool’s Web site. There it conducts a search of its database and directs the response back to your computer. What is a Search Method? The search method is the way a search tool requests and retrieves information from its Web site. A search begins at a selected search tool’s Web site, reached by means of its address or URL. Each tool’s Web site comprises a store of information called a database. This database has links to other databases at other Web sites, and the other Web sites have links to still other Web sites, and so on. Each search tool has extended capabilities by means of a worldwide system of links. Types of Search Tools
  • Directory Search Tool – searches for information by subject matter. It is a hierarchical search that starts with a general subject heading and follows with a succession of increasingly more specific sub-headings. The search method it employs is known as a subject search. Choose a subject search when you want general information on a subject or topic.

Subject Directories Subject directories include human-selected Internet resources and are arranged and classified in hierarchical topics. Most search engines and portals have a subject directory component or partner. Hierarchical subject classification schemes are the defining characteristic of most subject directories. You 'drill down' to the level of entries which best meets your needs. Directories of web sites typically have a large amount of human effort involved in the selection, evaluation and indexing of web pages and therefore are considerably smaller than the machine built indexes. Most often these databases are built of URLs submitted by individuals to the directory but humans or web spiders may selectively search out new sites to be included.

    Searching the Internet
There's not one complete catalog of everything on the Internet, or one definitive source to use to search for information. There are many search tools and guides of various types available, some of which are listed below.
    Search Engines
What are Search Engines?: Search engines are actually databases compiled by computer programs that scan the Internet looking for pages to index. These search engines and databases are each different, so we recommend trying out your search at more than one site. Searching these specific engines individually, as opposed to using the meta-search engines mentioned below, allows you to use special commands to do a very precise search. To learn what these special commands are, look at the search help screen for each search engine. When to use Search Engines: When you need to do very precise searches for specific information (e.g., K'axob, an ancient Maya archaeological site. ), or for topics with multiple concepts or parts (e.g., the effects of second-hand smoke on children with respiratory diseases). These types of search engines can also be useful when you need to find a particular format of information (e.g., an image of a penguin).

    The Meta Searching Trend

    What are Meta Search Engines?
True meta search tools do not have their own database. They send your query to several search engines or directories at once, and consolidate all the results onto the same page. The point is to save time by using several search engines at the same time, helping you find obscure items. The term "meta search engine" is often misused. Some tools which do not consolidate results, but just stitch together results pages from various search tools are not meta search engines. Even websites similar to Fagan Finder have been called meta search engines, however they are not. How do Meta Search Engines Work?
Meta search engines will perform your search on each of the sources they include. They will go to the results pages, and parse (extract) the results from them. They record all this, and then manipulate this data however they want, such as removing duplicates. After they have processed the results, they create an HTML page with them listed, which is what you see. What Makes a Good Meta Search Engine?
