Internet Information Retrieval - The Further Development of Meta-Searchengine Technology

Institute for Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (Lehrgebiet Rechnernetze und Verteilte Systeme, RVS ), University of Hannover, Germany
Abstract
This paper first describes the state of the art of the meta-search technology. It defines criteria for evaluating such applications and investigates existing meta-searchengines. Secondly it outlines our approaches to solve some problems of Internet information retrieval, which were undertaken at Hannover University. We have been running high-traffic meta-searchengines for nearly two years ( http://mesa.rrzn.uni-hannover.de/ and http://meta.rrzn.uni-hannover.de/ ), and we are describing our experiences and the developments we have made to gain a higher degree of completeness and quality of Internet information retrieval. One of the mainstream ideas we are following is the combination of the overwhelming mass of internet data with manually reviewed information sources and own ranking algorithms. Combining these leads towards high quality results based on an Internet search as complete as possible.

"Metasearch" engines
(aka "compound" ~ "parallel" ~ "inference" engines, aka "pumps" aka "metas") Advantages : they query more search engines at the same time. Disadvantages : 1) good only for unique terms; 2) they spend a short time in each database; 3) discard complex searching logic; 4) try to "accommodate" all search engines they drain with the same query (not very good); 5) don't drain the Fast search engine (which you should always consider). Alas! Many 'compound' (or 'meta' or 'parallel') search engines are NOT what they promise to be. They are just all-in-one simple CGI scripts, trying to attract traffic to their sites simply querying with the SAME querymask various main search engines, one after the other.

A number of useful and popular search engines attempt to maintain full text indexes of the World Wide Web (e.g. AltaVista ( http://www.altavista.digital.com ), Excite ( http://www.excite.com ), HotBot ( http://www.hotbot.com ), Infoseek ( http://www.infoseek.com ), Lycos ( http://www.lycos.com ), and Northern Light ( http://www.nlsearch.com )). However, searching the Web can still be a slow and tedious process. Limitations of the search services have led to the introduction of meta search engines, e.g. MetaCrawler [ ] and SavvySearch [ ]. A meta search engine searches the Web by making requests to multiple search engines such as AltaVista or Infoseek. The primary advantages of current meta search engines are the ability to combine the results of multiple search engines, and the ability to provide a consistent user interface for searching these engines [ ]. Web searching has come a long way. Each year the number of search providers and portals continues to grow, while the variety of technologies and approaches used to deliver the results to the intrepid searcher continues to expand. By Information World Review Staff Just as well: researchers at IBM published findings in Scientific American in which they estimated the volume of information being published onto the web was a daily deluge of over one million pages (Members of the Clever Team, 'Hypersearching the Web', Scientific American , June 1999). So what have been the major developments and where are we heading? Static attraction First it is important to clarify what we mean by 'the web'. Despite its uniform interface and seamless linked integration, the web is not a single coherent element. Essentially, there are two types of web page: static (manually produced) and dynamic (database driven). The major differences are given in the following table: Static web pages Dynamic web pages manually produced computer generated generic information customised information most are indexable not indexable Available for indexing to all search engines, static web pages together constitute the 'visible' web. The 'invisible web' largely refers to database driven, dynamically generated web pages. For example, most publishers distribute their data on the web by integrating huge databases with a front-end search interface. By virtue of its professionally published origin, such information is typically high value and more highly structured and indexed than the 'visible' web. The user's search enquiry will generate customised, as opposed to generic, results. Nonetheless, the 'visible' web constitutes a significant contribution to the dissemination of human knowledge, and as the NEC studies (see 'Search Insider'

  • Introduction
Recent developments in peer to peer networks * have centered around the concept of distributed hashtables (DHT) or content routing [ Ratnasamy et al., 2001 Stoica et al., 2001 ]. These approaches assume possession of a hash or other identifier that precisely specifies the document the user wishes to retrieve. Naturally there are some situations in which a user only has more general information about their needs, e.g. keywords or other meta-data. A number of different strategies for handling this kind of search in peer to peer networks have recently come to light. Several are summarized below along with an attempt to identify some common themes
One could consider a document hash or other id to be a form of meta-data, but in this document we focus on more general meta-data strategies that involve either keywords or statements like those used in the Resource Description Format (

Meta-search engines are services that search several search engines more or less simultaneously, on the theory that this will provide more comprehensive coverage of the Internet. There are, however, problems with this idea. First, since each search engine has its own individual parameters concerning the queries it will accept, queries posed to meta-search engines are often "mistranslated," resulting in loss of relevancy of the returned search results. Second, meta-search engines only scan small parts of each individual search engine's database. Because of these two problems, many experts suggest posing complex queries directly to individual search engines. Meta-crawler : With Meta-crawler, users can select up to fifteen search engines (including some that are "off the beaten path" and may provide unique results) to run in parallel. Search customization is limited to "and," "or," and "phrase," although simple domain and origin filters are available, as well as the ability to rank by relevance, source, or site. Meta-crawler will suggest alternate searches, show "related pages," and allow the user to transfer the search to an alternate field, such as News Groups, Directory Listings, or Images. It possesses an extensive help function. Ixquick : With Ixquick, users can select up to fourteen comprehensive search engines and directories in which to look. Ixquick supports full Boolean, natural language and field searching, though there is no guarantee that query will be translated adequately at a search engine or directory that does not support full Boolean searching. There is only a limited help function.

    Lesson 3: Web Search Engines
    Module 6 Meta-Search Engines
A special kind of search engine called a meta-search engine (or parallel search engine), allows you to query several search engines at once. Instead of doing a search itself, a meta-search engine sends your request to other search engines, compiles the results, and displays them for you. This process is much faster than querying several search engines separately. Meta-search engines do not own a database of web pagesthey use and deliver results from the databases and search programs of each of the individual search engines they query. Meta-search engines act as an intelligent middle-man to pass your search through, gather the responses and then give you a report from several engines at once. As well as saving time, this kind of search engine can give you an overview of the kind of document you may find using your search terms and may even result in giving you exactly what you need if you are searching for a unique term or phrase. There are some disadvantages in relying exclusively on meta-search engines. None of the meta-search engines query all of the largest search engines. If a search connection takes too long, one or more of the search engines may time out and produce no results. If you submit a complicated search to a meta-search engine that one of the queried tools does not "understand", you may get no hits at all from that engine. However, you will usually get results from another tool that supports your search strategy.
