Chinese Seals
The role of seals in the Chinese culture can hardly be overestimated. For the last 3,000 years they have been used in official, private, even magic spheres. The earliest examples of seals come from the Shang dynasty (BCE 16-11 c.) from the archeological sites at Anyang. However very little is known about their usage at this early stage, it is only starting from the Spring and Autumn period (BCE 722-481) that we begin to see an increased quantity of seals paired with textual references to them. According to a Han dynasty story, the first seal was given to the Yellow Emperor by a yellow dragon with a chart on its back. Another story says that it was given to Emperor Yao by a phoenix as the emperor was sitting in a boat. In any case, the receipt of the seal signifies the conferral of the Mandate of Heaven. He who has the seal possesses the Mandate of Heaven, in other words, he has been given the right to rule the empire. So when Tang, the first ruler of the Shang dynasty overthrows the last tyrant of the previous Xia dynasty, he seizes the royal seal and thus establishes his power.

The two became one of pop's most consistent acts, churning out such hits as " I'd Really Love To See You Tonight " and " Nights Are Forever Without You ." However, Dan had barely tapped the depths of his musical talents. When the pair decided to part company, he chose to dedicate himself to making country records. Seals (Yinzhang)
Content by Mr.Du Feibao
Seal-cutting is traditionally listed along with painting, calligraphy and poetry as one of the "four arts" expected of the accomplished scholar and a unique part of the Chinese cultural heritage. A seal stamp in red is not only the signature on a work of calligraphy or painting but an indispensable touch to liven it up. The art dates back about 3,700 years to the Yin Dynasty and has its origin in the cutting of oracle inscriptions on tortoise shells. It flourished in the Qin Dynasty of 22 centuries ago, when people engraved their names on utensils and documents (of bamboo and wood) to show ownership or authorship. Out of this grew the cutting of personal names on small blocks of horn, jade or wood, namely the seals as we know them today. As in other countries, seals may be used by official departments as well as private individuals. From as early as the Warring States Period (475- 221 B.C.) an official seal would be bestowed as token of authorization by the head of a state to a subject whom he appointed to a high office. The seal, in other words, stood for the office and corresponding power. Private seals are likewise used to stamp personal names on various papers for purposes of authentication or as tokens of good faith. Seals reflect the development of written Chinese. The earliest ones, those of the Qin and Han dynasties, bear the

HAWAIIAN MONK SEALS
Female monk seal days prior to giving birth I. Biology and Natural History
Hawaiian monk seals are pinnipeds , which is the order of marine mammals including seals, sea lions and walruses. There are believed to be about 34 different species of pinnipeds. All are characterized by having large eyes, prominent snouts, streamlined shapes and four swimming flippers which typify the order. In fact, the word pinniped means "feather-" or "fin-footed" in Latin. Although they have successfully adapted to life in the sea, pinnipeds are thought to have evolved from terrestrial mammals about 20 million years ago and continue to retain strong ties to land. Their closest modern day terrestrial ancestors are the bear and the dog. Some biologists consider the pinnipeds to be so closely related to these species as to include them as members of order carnivora which includes the dogs, bears, wolves, raccoons and others. Whichever classification scheme you choose, the pinnipeds can be divided into three distinct families; 1) the Phocidae which are the "true," or earless seals 2) the Otariidae, the eared seals and sea lions, and 3) the Odobenidae, which includes only the walrus.
The three families differ mainly with respect to the possession of external ears and their means of locomotion. The Otariidae or eared seals, have external ears as their name implies. In addition, they have long front flippers that measure up to one-third of their body length which they use to propel themselves through the water. In the water, their hind flippers serve mainly as a rudder or as an aid in steering. On land, the hind flippers are able to turn under the seal's body and provide support, enabling them to make four-footed movements. Eared seals are fairly mobile on land as well as in the water.

Fujitsu Services has won a £220m contract to provide a digital archival system for the NHS in the south of England. Called a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), it stores medical scans, such as X-rays, in digital format, reducing the cost of storing and developing film. The images will be accessible to NHS staff via web technology, a feature that is expected to make calling up and transporting this patient information quick and easy. The system will affect some 13 millions patients and 256,000 NHS staff and is part of a programme to be rolled out nationwide. Fujitsu says PACS will be in use across the southern region within three years and it will provide support for the system until 2013. The NHS made a previous agreement with the IT services company in January 2004 to set up the National Programme for IT in southern England.

Seals in Shetland
The most numerous marine mammals in Shetland waters are two species of seal - the Grey Seal and Common Seal. However, other seals do occur naturally in Shetland as vagrants and to date an additional five species have been recorded. The old Shetland name for the Grey Seal is 'haaf' (deep sea) fish; because it prefers more open sea conditions; while the Common Seal is known as 'tang' (seaweed) fish because of its preference for more sheltered shores and islands. Contrary to the name there are fewer Common Seals in Britain as a whole than Grey Seals with around 28,000 Common and 105-100,000 Grey. In Shetland the situation is reversed with 6,000 Common Seals to 3,500 Grey Seals.
It is possible to age seals quite accurately by counting the growth rings round the roots of the back teeth. Most of the information about how long seals live comes from seals that have been kept in zoos. The oldest recorded seal in the world came from Shetland, a grizzled old female who lived to the ripe age of 46 years! Photo - Bearded Seal at Cullivoe, Yell in 1977 - the late Bobby Tulloch
