CYLINDER SEALS Sumerian/Elamite Cylinder Seals (French Sceaux-cylindres, German Zylindersiegel) are small (2-6 cm) cylinder-shaped stones carved with a decorative design in intaglio (engraved). The cylinder was rolled over wet clay to mark or identify clay tablets, envelopes, ceramics and bricks. It so covers an area as large as desired, an advantage over earlier stamp seals. Its use and spread coincides with the use of clay tablets, starting at the end of the 4th millennium up to the end of the first millennium. After this time stamp seals are used again. Cylinder seals are important to historians. The seals were needed as signature, confirmation of receipt, or to mark clay tablets and building blocks. The invention fits with the needs caused by the general development of city-states. Inscriptions are mostly carved in reverse, so as to leave a positive image on the clay with figures standing out. Some are directly carved and leave a negative imprint. Regarding the clay tablets found at Uruk: The language of these texts is not known so they cannot be 'read'. However, as the script is largely pictographic, they can at least be partly understood. Whether the elaborate writing system of the early Uruk texts with its large number of signs was the result of a long development or a rapid breakthrough, perhaps by a single individual, is not known.

The ringed seal got its name from the marks ( that look like rings ) on its body. It is the smallest seal - about a meter and a half long (five feet) THE YOUNG In spring, the female comes on land or on the pack ice to give birth to her babies ( pups ). A ringed seal gives birth to her pups in a small den in the snow on top of the ice. This shelters them from their enemies. ne stormy December night in 1903 a postman named Einar Holboell was working late in a post office on the outskirts of Copenhagen. He was sorting great piles of Christmas mail. As he moved around among the mailbags he paused to look out the window. Just at that moment two little waifs, a ragged little girl and boy appeared. He saw them only for a moment before they disappeared in the swirling snow. Einar Holboell went back to the stacks of letters and parcels with a sad heart. The contrast between the expressions of good will slipping through his fingers and the forsaken looking children troubled him. Suddenly he had an idea. Perhaps one of the letters gave it to him. Just suppose that every letter or parcel carried an extra stamp, and the money from the tens of thousands of such stamps went to help unfortunate children. What a blessing it would be! Being a postman he realized what large sums of money could be donated without it costing anyone very much. Many ideas which seem splendid late at night do not seem as bright in the morning. However, even in the cold light of the next morning the postman thought his idea good enough to tell his fellow workers about it. They were enthusiastic. At first they wondered if they could try it that year. A little calculation convinced them that there was not time to get a design, get seals printed and, most important of all, get the scheme well explained to the public who would be buying the seals. They determined however that they would work out all the details and be ready in plenty of time in 1904.

Mirounga Angustirostris (Northern Elephant Seal) Mirounga Angustirostris, or the Northern Elephant Seal as it is commonly know, is found in the waters of the North Eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean and along the coast line from British Columbia, Canada to the mid California coast of the United States. The Northern Elephant Seal is smaller, perhaps two thirds smaller than the Elephant Seals found in the waters off of Argentina and Antarctica. Even so, the males (bulls) can weigh in at 1,300 pounds (600 KG) and reach a length of over 12 feet (4,000 mm). During the months of December through February, the seals come out of the water for birthing and breeding. The males often arrive on the shore up to a month before the females. Most of their time is spent sleeping on the beach. Although the males will occasionally return to the water for short periods of time. This is especially true of the younger males, the majority of their time is spent on land during this period. A male bellowing his dominance When the females arrive in January, they give birth to their pups within six days of arriving on the beach. The pups weigh between 60 - 70 pounds (30 KG) at birth. The mothers will remain on the beach, foregoing food while nursing their pups. A pup typically nurses for about 28 days. During this time the pup will gain 10% of it's birth weight per day.
