Norwegian seal-hunting is restricted to two species of seal: the harp seal and the hooded seal. In the North Atlantic, the harp seal population alone numbers close to four million animals. Of these, approximately 900 000 are to be found in areas where Norwegians hunt for seal. The seal populations are growing.

They can weight up to 600kg, a good portion of which is fat. As an additional protection against the cold the have a thin layer of very dense fur. The male is bigger than the female, up to 3m long, but is not seen too often on the ice. They are very good divers, able to dive down to 600m and hold their breath for an hour. Their only predator is the killer whale, sometimes seen offshore. During those dives they catch and eat mainly fish, squids, octopuses, krill, crabs and shrimp. Baby seals have never been hunted in Antarctica and big ones have not been hunted for about a century (whalers used to catch them when they couldn't find enough whales). From the dark color of baby seals, it's easy to tell they don't have land predators: baby seals from the arctic are white to try to hide from the sight of polar bears... If the ice is not too thick, Weddell seals can drill a hole in it by opening their mouth wide and turning it repeatedly against the ice. They normally never venture inland, but mummified remains of seals have been found in the

69. Great American Country - Brady Seals Page
Biography.
http://www.countrystars.com/artists/bseals.html
Brady Seals
Brady Seals B rady Seals opens a brand new chapter on his second Warner Bros. Records outing with a self-titled collection of new original music. These fresh and freewheeling tunes reflect Brady, the man, with seven of the well-crafted cuts co-penned or penned by Seals himself. Brady Seals displays an artist who is adept at the full range of contemporary country styled, yet able to infuse his music with a warmth and personality wholly his own. "C ountry As A Boy Can Be," an infectious cut from Brady Seals , pretty much sums up Brady. "As I started to focus on the new project, I removed myself from the confines of the city an spent a lot of time out in the woods in a little cabin in Kentucky. When you are out in nature, the last thing you want to see is fences and limits," Brady says. "When I took these songs into the studio to record them, I wanted to capture that feeling of wide open spaces, that freedom to roam where the music takes you." T hat is exactly what happened when critically acclaimed producer, songwriter and friend Rodney Crowell sat next to him at the boards. Seals and Crowell assembled an all-star cast of special guests and legendary sidemen to bring all of Brady's ideas to the album. Such greats as labelmate Bela Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Timothy B. Schmit of Eagles fame, and a host of others, have Brady reeling. "It was incredible," enthuses Brady. "You start out with the sound of a song inside your head and these guys just bring it out and make it real. I owe so much to Rodney Crowell, who not only wrote with me, but also put together these great musicians and songwriters."

The Harbor Seal is a marine mammal that spends most of its life in the sea, but also enjoys sunbathing on rocks or on the beach. It is a pinniped (related to walruses and sea lions) that lives along shorelines in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, in temperate, subarctic, and arctic waters. Seals have a life span of about 25 to 30 years. Anatomy : The Harbor Seal has short, thick fur, grows to be up to 6.5 feet (2 m) long and can weigh up to 375 pounds (170 kg). The whiskers (called vibrissae) help the seal's sense of touch. The nostrils are closed in the resting state. Diet : Harbor Seals are carnivores (meat-eaters); they eat mostly mollusks (like squid and clams fish , and crustaceans. Seals don't chew their food. They swallow it in large chunks. http://www.pbs.org/kratts/world/ant/seal/index.html
Southern Elephant Seal Scientific Name: Mirounga leonina Home: The rocky shores of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands Description: Huge four ton, silvery-skinned, sea mammals with stout squared-off head, a small trunk-like nose, and flippers The southern elephant seal gets its name for being super-big and having a nose with a small trunk! Males, also called bulls, use these trunks to fight for breeding rights. The heavy-weights of the seal family, elephant seals can barely move on land flippers make these creatures swift and powerful swimmers, but they aren't strong enough to lift a seal body off the ground much. Large fishes, squid and an occasional penguin fall prey to elephant seals, who have few, if any predators. Beach parties of hundreds of seals sunbathe on the shores together! When bull elephant seals fight, they will often bend their bodies into a U, balancing on their chests in shows of strength! The bulls are as much as three times as big as elephant seal cows! The biggest elephant seal ever was over 20 feet long, and when it raised up on its flippers, it stood 10 feet tall! That seal could slam dunk with its trunk! Beachmaster seals are the bulls that have fought and won breeding rights to whoever happens to be on the beach sometimes beachmasters end up fighting and gaining a harem of over 50 cows!

Seals
Phocidae Seals swim in Arctic waters eating fish like arctic cod as well as crustaceans and mollusks. Their rear flippers are turned backward. This improves their swimming, but makes it difficult to move around on land because their toes point backwards. Try walking around with your toes pointing backwards! Instead they prefer sliding around on the ice. One species, the ringed seal, spends most of its time beneath the ice. It digs up through the ice with its strong claws to open breathing holes and must keep pushing it nose through the ice to keep the holes from icing over. This is easier than making new holes, but if they aren't careful a polar bear will see their hole and catch them. Seals are great divers and can stay under water for long periods of time without returning to the surface for a breath. Mature seals mate in the spring. Calves are born in the spring of the following year, and stay with their mothers for a few weeks until they are able to catch prey for themselves. Besides, their soft baby fur is not warm enough to be alone, and they must wait until their white fur has changed to a darker thicker pelt better suited for arctic waters. Seals were over hunted by humans for many years, but now many seal species are protected and can only be caught by native people in the Arctic.

Seals
We have four species of seals which may be seen in the Bay of Fundy, one of which is common ( harbour seal ), one which is increasing in numbers ( grey seal ) and two which are sporadic visitors ( hooded and harp seals These seals belong to the phocids or earless seals. They can not bring their hind flippers under the body as another group of seals can (otariids or sea lions, fur seals, etc.), they swim with a side-to-side motion of their body using their hind flippers as a rudder and they lack ear lobes or pinnae. One species, which is the only member of the odobenids, has been extirpated (or removed) through hunting pressure ( walrus ). Seals occupy a controversial place in the Bay of Fundy because of conflicts with fisheries and aquaculture but they are generally regarded positively by visitors and there are growing numbers of "S eal Watching Adventures" in conjunction with other activities. Phocids or Earless Seals: Harbour Seals Phoca vitulina concolor - common
Grey Seals
Halichoerus grypus - occasional
Hooded Seals
Crystophora cristata - rare
Harp Seals
Phoca groenlandica - rare Odobenid: Walrus Odobenus rosmarus - extirpated
Species Descriptions:
Harbour Seals
The most common species of seal in the Bay of Fundy is the harbour seal Phoca vitulina concolor
Grey Seals
Grey seals Halichoerus grypus
Hooded Seals
Hooded seals Crystophora cristata
Harp Seals
Harp seals Phoca groenlandica ) are also rare visitors to the Bay of Fundy, usually living in the Arctic in the summer and pupping on ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the winter. Both sexes attain 170cm (5'7") in length and 130kg (296lb) in weight. The coat colour is white with a dark "harp" or saddle on the back and dark face. Pups are born in late February to mid-March on pack ice and are weaned after 10 days. The pups are called "whitecoats" for the first three weeks until they moult into a grey coat with dark spots and are then called "beaters". Immatures of 14 months and older are known as "bedlamers". The diet is mostly fish and crustaceans. Long been hunted the population is increasing with decreases in hunting pressure. Because of the rarity of this seal in the Bay of Fundy it is not considered a pest to fisheries or aquaculture, nor is it hunted, but would be treated in the same manner as harbour and grey seals when it occurs.
