Dan Seals
Few musical performers have ever been skillful or talented enough to achieve success in two different musical genres. Then again, there are few musicians as gifted as Dan Seals. However, Seals had barely tapped the depths of his musical talents. When the pair decided to part company, Seals chose to dedicate himself to making country records. Country music, with its personal and passionate lyrical stance, was the perfect medium for Seals. Seals' venture into country music only brought him more acclaim. He topped the charts with the heart-breaking "Everything That Glitters" and "You Still Move Me." At the other end of the scale, Seals was able to shake things up with "Bop" and "Let The Good Times Roll." In 1986 he won Country Music Association awards for Single of the Year and Duet with Marie Osmond for "Meet Me In Montana." Network LoginHelp Contact Us About Us ... To Advertise

Seals
Although there are 35 species of seals, only six types live in Antarctica: Antarctic Fur Seals, Crabeater Seals, Leopard Seals, Ross Seals, and Weddell Seals. However, these six species make up the majority of the world's seal population. With no natural land predators, such as polar bears or man, Antarctic seals behave much differently than northern sealsshowing little fear of man.
Seals are categorized into three families: true seals, eared seals (common to most zoos), and walruses (found in the arctic). All of the seals in Antarctica are true seals (no ears). Even without ears, seal hearing out of the water is as good as human's. In the water, their hearing is even better. Its theorized that seals use a type of sonar to locate food, much like what dolphins and whales use.
In addition to using sonar for navigation and locating groups of food, its believed seals use their whiskers as a form of radar. The whiskers detect movement in the water and allow the seal to zoom in a particular object. Through the use of their sonar and radar, seals can actually find food in complete darkness better than in the light.
As for their eyes, seals don't really see color but they are particularly sensitive to common sea water colors (greens, green-blues). Seals eyes have a silvery lining behind the retina, just like cats and other nocturnal/low-light hunters. This lining reflects the light back through the eye and increases the total amount of light absorbed by the eyeanother necessary feature when hunting in the dimly lit depths of the oceans.

http://www.cresli.org/cresli/seals/hbrseals.html
Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina)
Named common seal throughout Europe, this seal frequently observed around Long Island lives along the shores of eastern Canada, New England and in the winter, as far south as the Carolinas in a variety of habitats. Their scientific name loosely means "sea calf" or "sea dog." This latter nickname is well suited as these seals closely resemble a dog when their head is viewed at the surface of the water. Harbor seals can be viewed in small groups hauled out basking on sand bars, rocks or remote beaches, sometimes popping their heads up in t he waters nearby. Usually wary of humans, they are known to follow fishing boats, feeding on the scraps thrown overboard and occasionally harbor seals will haul out on someone's dock or even in their boat. When hauled out, harbor seals often lie with their heads and hind flippers elevated in what is often referred to as the "banana-like" position. When resting in water, harbor seals can be seen in what we call the "bottling" position, with heads tilted straight back and perpendicular to the surface; thus assuming the appearance of a floating bottle. Harbor seals, like most other seal species, migrate southward every winter, returning to New England and Canada in the summer. On Long Island a large influx of these seals arrive in November and remain through mid- May, although some are thought to stay throughout the year.

36. Ringed Seals
Ringed seals. Phoca hispida. These small seals resemble the larger harbor seal, reaching only 4 to 4 ½ feet and weighing 150 200 pounds.
http://www.cresli.org/cresli/seals/ringseal.html
Ringed Seals
Phoca hispida This very common seal is found throughout the Arctic wherever there is stable ice near land, especially in bays, but also in lakes and river openings. They are named for the many dark ringed spots that are surrounded by a silvery color on the back and sides. The underbelly is silver. These small seals resemble the larger harbor seal, reaching only 4 to 4 ½ feet and weighing 150 - 200 pounds. The Latin name hispidus means "rough and bristly" referring to their fur. It is thought that these seals may live up to 40 years, although many survive only through their mid-twenties. Ringed seals feed mainly on polar cod and shrimp-like animals. Population estimates for ringed seal are between 3 ½ to 6 million, which makes them the most abundant of the Arctic seals. The young are born in lairs, or dens which the female often digs out in a snow bank. This shelter is thought to protect the pup from predators such as Arctic foxes and polar bears, as well as the bitter cold winds. The white haired babies are 26 inches long and weigh about 10 pounds. The pup remains with the mother for 6 - 8 weeks before it is weaned. During this time the pups are sought after by the native people who hunt them for their silvery pelt. During this time the pups are known as "silver jars." In late fall and winter ringed seals live under the ice by maintaining breathing holes, while younger seals stay at the edge of the ice where there is open water.
