Sea otters consume approximately 20% of their body weight in food daily. They dive to the bottom of their shallow shoreline habitat to feed upon sea urchins, clams, oysters, and other shellfish. Only strong males are able to catch fish. The otters return to the surface with their prey, float on their backs, and strike the shellfish together or against rocks to pry them open. Sea otters have a strong influence on coastal ecosystems. They restrict the sea urchin populations in near-shore habitats, allowing kelp forests to flourish (sea urchins graze heavily on kelp). It's easy to see where sea otters thrive: Just look for abundant kelp. Pups are born (generally one per litter) after a six-month gestation period and remain with their mother for 12 weeks. Fathers play no role in the offspring's upbringing; the two sexes tend to remain separate except when breeding. There are three subspecies of sea otters, two of which are in the United States. The Southern, or California, sea otter ( Enhydra lutris nereis ) is represented by only one population in California and is declining at a disturbing rate. The Northern sea otter (

... Act Now! Anticipating sea otters, Clark thought he saw them in the Columbia, but they turned out to be seals. When the explorers reached the coast, however, they found plenty, and Lewis and Clark traded the Native Americans blue beads, a vest, and a knife, among other items, for the lustrous furs. This same lively fur trade would eventually eliminate the otter between Alaska and California. Reintroduction efforts brought otters back to the Washington coast, where they once again live in kelp forests and eat sea urchins Federally threatened.

The furry, brown sea otter is an ocean-going member of the weasel family. Well adapted to a marine life, the otter's hind feet are webbed and flattened into broad flippers. Large, flat molars help the otter to eat hard-shelled sea animals, and dense, soft fur protects it from the cold ocean water. Adult Southern sea otters average about 4 feet (1.3 meters) long, and 45-65 lb. (20-30 kg) in weight. Male otters are larger than females. The Southern sea otter is one of the two subspecies of sea otter on the Pacific Coast of North America. The larger, Alaskan or Northern sea otter has a more northerly range. "A Marine Mammal" Sea otters live in a narrow band along the coast, and rarely venture much more than about 1 1/2 miles (3km) offshore. Kelp beds (a "forest" of very tall seaweed anchored to the seafloor) are a favorite habitat. Sea otters are often seen just offshore, floating on their backs, paddling with their hind limbs and sculling with their tail. They sometimes congregate in groups of several otters called "rafts". Sea otters often sleep in the kelp forest, lying under strands of the seaweed to keep from drifting away. "Valuable Fur" Sea otters spend almost half their day grooming their fur in order to keep it waterproof and warm - dirty, matted fur would soon lose it's insulating properties - and put the otter in peril from cold. This is because the sea otter has no insulating fat or blubber like seals and whales, so it's extremely thick fur is very important. Otter fur is the densest of any mammals, with about 100,000 hairs/ cm2, that's over 800 million hairs on a large adult. To get an idea of how much 800 million is, picture 106 shoeboxes filled with sugar grains! Ironically, this special fur that helps the sea otter survive, has also endangered it. Sea otter pelts have been a valuable item to people since the 1700's. Unregulated hunting during the 18th and 19th centuries severely reduced otter populations.

http://mypage.direct.ca/r/rhsu/otters.html
Implication of Sea Otter Population on Kelp Forest Communities By Rodney Hsu Abstract This report investigates the impacts caused by the increasing of sea otter population, on the kelp forest ecosystem. The food chain of the three major species is focused in this report: Sea otter, sea urchin and macroalgae. It provides a clear description of the food chain formed by these three species and how the existence and absence of sea otter changes the population structures of the other species in the kelp forest ecosystem. This study focuses on two researches: One was done by Dr. Jane Watson in 1993 on Northwest Vancouver Island, and the other major study was done by Dr. James Estes and Dr. David Duggins in Alaska back in the past two decades. Introduction Back in the late 18th Century after North America was discovered, the Europeans heavily hunted sea otters around the West Coast of North America. Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters have very little fat. In order to adapt to the cold water temperature during the winter period, they have very dense furred skin, which acts as great insulator. The thick furred skin was what the hunters were after for the commercial trade. The great fur hunt went on for 170 years until early 1900's when the Fur Seal Agreement was signed. By that time sea otters' population had declined to the point that they became extinct in many areas. Today, total population of sea otters have recovered, but sea otters remain absent in some areas where they used to be abundant over 200 years ago. It wasn't until the early 1980's that ecologists began to study the impacts of sea otters to the communities of rocky shoreline. By studying the top-down food chain of sea otters, various herbivorous marine invertebrate species (sea urchins in particular), and kelp, scientists have identified sea otters as a "key stone" species in the intertidal environment.

Sea Otter Rehabilitation

On March 24, 1989 the Exxon Valdez ran aground and the oil traveled far into Prince William Sound. Sea otters were one species of animals that was affected by the oil spill. There were about 400 sea otter rescue volunteers. The first thing that they needed to do was catch the otters.
There were two ways that the people caught the otters; one way was that they would look through binoculars and find the otters that look distressed. Then they would take little boats out and trap the otters on land, where they couldn't move as fast as in the water. Another way that they could catch the otters was they found the place where the otters were most likely to swim through, then they would put a net down and catch the otters. They checked the net every hour or so. Sometimes, the fumes from the oil would make the collectors so drowsy it was very hard for them to collect the otters. In relation to the oil spill, it wasn't until 24 hours after the oil spilled that they helped the otters. After many otters were collected the people brought them to a large rented gymnasium in Valdez.
One thing that was bad about having the otters out of the water was that they would get pressure sores from resting on plywood, plastic grates, and wire mesh. Sometimes, to improve the otters skin and fur they would put them in salt water pools or floating pens. The workers cleaned the tanks out about every 3 days.

... Willie the Sea Otter
Willie the Sea Otter
Willie the sea otter has a unique story, but it is one that represents some of the best work that zoos and aquariums do to intervene in the natural world. It is also a story of the relationship between animals and the people who care for them. Willie is a California sea otter Enhydra lutris nerisis , also called the southern sea otter. He differs from the northern sea otter, Enhydra lutris lutris , in both size, (he is smaller, about 60 lbs) and in his Threatened status. The Alaskan sea otter, or northern sea otter, can weigh up to 90lbs and the population is generally robust throughout its range.. All California sea otters were thought to be extinct into the 1900’s. In 1915, however, 32 otters were discovered at Point Sur. So fragile was this remnant population that biologists kept it secret from the public until the 1930's. Since that time, and under strict protection, the population has grown to a considerably improved, but still precarious, population of about 2000 - hence Willie’s Threatened status. Each spring many sea otters strand along the shores near the Monterey Bay. The Sea Otter Research and Conservation Program (SORAC) of the Monterey Bay Aquarium rescue these otters whenever possible. On April 15, 1994, Willie was found on the beach, bedraggled and barely alive. He was just two days old with his umbilicus still attached. A tourist found his matted form in the sand and kelp along the beach of Spanish Bay, near Pebble Beach. The Monterey Bay rescue team responded immediately. They speculated that a recent storm had separated Willie from his mother. - Newborn pups are so buoyant that they cannot dive below the action of the surface waves and are literally “tossed before the storm”. Mothers can easily lose track. “He was a mess.” the staff recalls.

The basking animal is likely to be a sea otter. "They're the teddy bears of the ocean," says C.J. Casson. He's curator of mammals and birds at the Seattle Aquarium. A sea otter lolling in the water. Seattle Aquarium Floating on a bed of seaweed or cracking a clam on its chest, a sea otter looks as if it doesn't have a care in the world. Otter researchers such as Casson know better. For 150 years, sea otters were hunted so heavily for their fur that, by 1910, they had disappeared from the waters off Washington and Oregon. They've made a comeback in Washington with help from scientists and conservationists. But, according to ocean mammal researcher Ed Bowlby, Washington's otters aren't out of the woods yet. And other groups of sea otters in California and Alaska have taken a turn for the worse. California otters seem to be getting sick more often than they used to. In Alaska, the rapid loss of sea otters turns out to have a shocking cause. Killer whales have started eating them.

100. Those Naughty Sea Otters
I m not overly fond of sea otters. That s right, it all comes down to Values and, more particularly, to the obvious lack of values displayed by sea otters.
http://www.id.ucsb.edu/lovelab/otter.html
I'm not overly fond of sea otters. Despite this outpouring of emotion, I still think otters are overrated. Now, I don't want a flood of anguished letters calling me bad names and casting aspersions upon my character. For one thing there's not that much to cast aspersions upon. So, save yourself some time. Don't hobble over to your writing desk, pull out that hideous monogrammed stationary, put quill to paper and pen some quasi-coherent complaint. I'm not suggesting we turn otters into hats. I just think the hoopla is overblown. And why don't I slobber all over these furry little creatures, these cuddly little denizens that look like they come straight out of some aquatic Lord of the Rings? Well, my friends, it comes down to a simple thing called Values. That's right, it all comes down to Values and, more particularly, to the obvious lack of values displayed by sea otters. Let's just look at a few of the more egregious examples. No Self Control Hey, what can I say? This is supposed to be the Age of Self Control. From governments to individuals, the cry rings out "Live within your means. Show some restraint". But do sea otters exhibit such responsibility? I think not. Needing to eat about 25% of their body weight per day, sea otters, perhaps better labelled "Sea Shrews" or "Sea Rats", spend much of their time just getting enough to eat. An average adult otter needs at least 2 tons of food per year to survive. Otters are extremely efficient predators, feeding on a wide range of invertebrates, particularly abalone, sea urchins, crabs, mussels and clams. It is very likely that once otters make it big in southern California the lobster population will also take a header. When times get tough, they start in on the relatively poor food resources, such as sand dollars and starfish. Where otters live, most large invertebrates are small and uncommon.
