Sea lions are not native to those waters and typically bark loudly when excited. There was no way their presence, officials decided, could be kept secret. No final decision has been made on whether the sea lions will stay. Intelligence officials have warned repeatedly about the threat of terrorists using divers to blow up ships. California Sea Lion OTARIIDAE (Eared Seals and Sea Lions)
Description
The California sea lion is probably the most commonly seen pinniped Size: California sea lions show an extreme degree of sexual dimorphism, with males much larger than females. A male sea lion may measure up to 2.4 meters (8 feet) and weigh 270 kg (600 lbs); a female may measure up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) and weigh 90 kg (200 lbs.) Similar species: Guadalupe Fur Seal Elephant seal Harbor seal
Range and Habitat
As the common name suggests, this species occurs mainly in California's coastal waters, but is also found around the Galapagos Islands and Japan. This species ranges along the Pacific Coast, from British Columbia south to California and the coast of Mexico. Except in summer, the California sea lion, a temperate to subtropical species, overlaps its range with that of the Steller's sea lion, a subarctic to temperate species, which ranges from the Bering Sea south to the Channel Islands. The breeding range of Zalophus extends from the Channel Islands off southern California south along the coast of Mexico, possibly to the Tres Marias Islands. A number of islands in the Sea of Cortez have breeding populations, but the major sites are San Miguel and San Nicolas islands in the Channel Island chain, along with several islands off the Pacific Coast of Baja California.

MONTEREY BAY PINNIPEDS and OTTER Barking California Sea Lions are a constant in fall and winter in Monterey, and I hear them from my backyard hot tub when conditions are right. Harbor seals are common attractions along the rocky shore and in Elkhorn Slough. The other pinnipeds, though, require either trips to breeding colonies just north or south of Monterey County (Northern Elephant Seal and Steller's Sea Lion) or luck on offshore boat trips. I've never seen a Northern Fur Seal from shore. Short photo introductions to the various species follow.
All photos are from Monterey Bay or nearby Sea Otter Enhydra lutris nearly went extinct due to hunting for their fur in former centuries, but today they are a star attraction along the shores of Monterey Bay. They are easily seen in Elkhorn Slough, around the Monterey Peninsula, and down the Big Sur coast. They are popular attractions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Local populations have been studied intensively, and much information is available on line. There is a local Sea Otter society with a gift shop on Cannery Row. Photo above California Sea Lion Zalophus californianus is a common visitor in fall and winter from Channel Island breeding populations, and in some years a few remain through spring and summer. Sea lions are easily identified by their external ears (seals show no ears) and by their raucous barking. When present, they commandeer unused boats in the harbor, buoys, and the Coast Guard jetty. They can be very aggressive off Fisherman's Wharf. Our visiting population is almost entirely composed of males; females don't venture this far north.

Sea Otters, Seals and Sea Lions on the Kenai Peninsula
The cutest of all saltwater wildlife has to be the sea otter. Its whiskery "old man" look and innocence make it a mammal that everyone loves to view. The coastal areas surrounding the Kenai Peninsula support large numbers of sea otters as well as populations of seals and sea lions. Otters are frequent visitors to kelp patches where much of their primary food sources occur. Seals and sea lions feed in more open waters primarily for herring and other bait fish but best viewing is along rocky shorelines where they haul out to sunbathe. Shore-based Viewing
Although viewing from shore is somewhat limited there are a few locations which will give you an opportunity to view and photograph these creatures. If you are in Homer , I have always encountered a sea otter or two swimming just off the beach at the end of the Homer Spit around Land's End Resort. This area provides no protection for them so the ones that frequent this location are passing through during their feeding. Its a waiting game but you won't be bored. The view of the bay, glaciers, mountains and the procession of sport and commercial fishing boats is breath-taking. If you are in Seward , you will have excellent opportunities to view sea lions and sea otters right in town near the Small Boat Harbor. A large number of

Figuring out what a northern fur seal has eaten recently can be a messy business, says fisheries biologist Jeremy Sterling of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle, Wash. Determining where they have been eating is a bit more high-tech. The Alaska Ecosystems Program, which includes Sterling and more than a dozen other researchers, has been using satellites to track northern fur seals and Steller sea lions in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea for nearly a decade. With a transmitter attached to an animal's back sending signals to the Argos instrument on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's polar-orbiting satellite, the scientists can record the marine mammal's path as it swims hundreds of kilometers from land foraging for food. Now the scientists are combining their information about where the animals go to find food with data from another satellite, Topex/Poseidon, to understand why the animals choose to go where they do.

The sea lions? You paid for them
You knew your tax dollars were funding "pork" projects. Thanks to a nonprofit group, now you can see exactly what they are.
By BILL ADAIR, Times Staff Writer Published January 16, 2004 Click here for Common Sense database WASHINGTON - Every year when Congress votes on federal spending, people complain the bills are so massive it's difficult to know what's inside. Some projects are described in such arcane language they can't be identified. But this year, the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense has compiled a giant list of federal projects so everyone - including the senators who will vote on the bill next week - can see where the money would go. The list reveals an explosion of federal spending on everything from Disneyland buses to "stellar sea lions." With a glance at the list, you can see why we love political pork - and why we don't.

The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina have been endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities." These California sea lions "hauled out" on PIER 39's K-Dock shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990. At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful supply of herring, the available dock space and a protected environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a couple of months. Each winter the population grows as high as 900. During the summer months the sea lions tend to migrate to the Channel Islands, but now a small group chooses to stay at PIER 39's K-Dock. Year-round, weather permitting, free educational talks, provided by Marine Mammal Center volunteers, are available on weekends from 11 am to 5 pm. By Toni Frohoff Impacts of California Sea lions and the Pacific Harbor Seals on Salmonids and West Coast Ecosystems. Congress has yet to act on the recommendation, which means that no state agency can act on it either, but NMFS has maintained all but the most extreme elements of its position. The 1999 recommendation includes giving state and federal resource managers the ability to kill seals and sea lions without attempting reasonable nonlethal alternatives and without determining if the animals are actually impacting fish stocks. The Humane Society of the United States opposes the recommendation and is concerned that it represents a dangerous step toward further mismanagement of both marine mammal and fish populations. The recommendation for lethal removal of seals and sea lions is ecologically, ethically, and scientifically indefensible and irresponsible. There are no data to support the contention that seals and sea lions are responsible for the decline of fisheries, and none to indicate that the recommendation will achieve the stated goal of enhancing depleted fish populations. In fact, since the recommendation was issued, NMFS's own research and that of the states of Washington and Oregon have shown that seal and sea lion predation is occurring at a much lower rate than NMFS had suspected, and is not a significant factor in fish declines. Papers presented at the previous Society for Marine Mammalogy's biennial conference pointed out the same thing: Sea lions and seals are neither the proximal cause of the decline nor a significant contributor to it.

About Us Field Projects How You Can Help Publications ... Case History: Preventing California Sea Lion Foraging and Predation on Salmonids at Willamette Falls Case History: Preventing California Sea Lion Foraging and Predation on Salmonids at Willamette Falls
In 1997, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) produced an Environmental Assessment which proposed measures to reduce predation of salmonids by California sea lions at the Willamette Falls fish passage facility in Oregon. These agencies are concerned about the potential effects of sea lion predation on declining populations of native spring chinook salmon and winter steelhead in this area. However, the data show that these runs were seriously declining prior to the occurrence of sea lion predation. Also, some fish runs that were not observed to be preyed upon by sea lions have declined even more dramatically than those observed to be preyed upon by sea lions. Consequently, The HSUS does not believe that sea lions are responsible for this decline. The proposed measures include capturing and relocating sea lions from the Willamette River to downstream in the Columbia River or in Oregon coastal waters. Other measures include the use of underwater firecrackers and acoustic deterrent devices. The HSUS disagrees with the NMFS and ODFW that these measures can be deemed "non-lethal" because capture and translocation of sea lions is always a risky procedure. Also, the risk of physical trauma, in the form of hearing loss or other injury, has not been determined for these devices. Furthermore, it is likely that this effort will fail. Previous efforts to relocate sea lions have proven unsuccessful because sea lions frequently return to the site of capture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Seals and Sea Lions. View the La Jolla Friends of Seals SealCam Live on CamZone Networks' website.
  • Why are the animals on the beach? The marine mammals that most often come ashore at the Children's Pool beach are Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina) and California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus). The seals "haul out" on the Children's Pool beach in the Fall, Winter and Spring. They come to the protected beach when offshore rocks are washed by high surf and corresponding high tides. The seals prefer areas of easy entry and exit such as the Children's Pool beach.
  • How can you tell a Harbor Seal from a Sea Lion? Sea lions are larger, with longer flippers and are very vocal. Sea lions can support themselves on their two front flippers and actually walk. Sea lions are more territorial and aggressive. Give sea lions a wide berth. Seals are smaller and have a sleeker torpedo type of shape. They move with a rhythmic sliding or shuffling motion, and they don't use their flippers to support their body. Harbor seals are very shy and rarely vocalize. Why do they come ashore?
