"They've always been there, they were here when our people came; they swam ashore off sinking ships"
- the elders of coastal North Carolina
On an uninhabited barrier island, just off the coast of North Carolina, live wild horses. They roam the dunes and marshes and swim in the small channels between the island and the nearby tidal flats, which ebb-out on the low tides and disappear again with the next high tide. For generation after generation of the coastal people, there have been stories handed-down about the wild horses that roamed these sand banks we now call the Outer Banks. Hardy and tough, they have survived where man could not. They have endured ... through hurricanes, droughts, north-easters, so'westers, and centuries. Now they need protection to survive.

Yellow seahorse ( Hippocampus kuda ) from the Indo-Pacific. (Photo by Scott W. Michael) Which aquarist hasn't been attracted by the strange beauty of a seahorse drifting from one coral to another? That's the reason why a few years ago I bought my first specimen of Hippocampus kuda . Keep in mind that it is a fish and not an invertebrate, and that it can reach a length of about 25 centimeters (cm), or 10 inches. This species is the most common seahorse in the Indo-Pacific ocean, where it swims slowly among seaweed and algae. Color varies with locality, from black to brown, white, yellow, and even red individuals. Keeping these fantastic animals doesn't present any special difficulties as long as you keep in mind some general guidelines. They must be in an aquarium with minimal water movement and many places to attach to such as coral branches, gorgonians, or Caulerpa They are well-suited for a reef tank containing less active fish and shrimp such as Stenopus sp. or

Seahorses are a type of small fish that have armored plates all over their body (they don't have scales). There are about 50 different species of seahorses around the world. They live in seaweed beds in warm water and are very slow swimmers. Seahorses can change their color to camouflage (hide) themselves in order to hide from enemies. The most unusual seahorse is the Australian sea horse, which has leaf-like camouflage all over its body, making it almost disappear in the seaweed bed. Anatomy : Seahorses have a long, horse-like head (hence their name) and a curled tail. Seahorses range in size from under a centimeter long (Pygmy Seahorses) to about 1 foot (30 cm) long. Reproduction : The female seahorse produces eggs, but they are held inside the male's body until they hatch; he is pregnant for about 40 to 50 days. The sea horse is the only animal in which the father is pregnant. Classification : Kingdom: Animalia (animals), Phylum: Chordata, Class: Osteichthyes (bony fish), Order: Gasterosteiformes (armored, small-mouthed fish), Family: Syngnathidae (pipe fish), Genus: Hippocampus (meaning "horse sea monster" in Greek), and many species.

Tennessee-Walking-Horses - Introduction
Blue Moon Walking Horses Typical Tennessee Walking Horses are affectionate, gentle and intelligent animals. Walking Tennessee Horses are of composed blood. As the horse was crossed with many other breeds, it is a unique breed. There have been crosses of the Thoroughbred with the sturdy stock of the Saddle Horses, which the Virginians brought across the mountains in the early pioneer days. The other breed's blood in the Tennessee Walking Horse is the Canadian Pacer and the Narragansett Pacer; they are already extinct. One more blood that was mixed into the breed of the Tennessee Walking Horse is the Saddlebred. Thanks to these crosses the breed nowadays possesses endurance and upstanding qualities of the Thoroughbred, the substance and weight of the Standardbred, the smooth lines and docility of the Morgan, the style and quality of the American Saddle Horse.
Tennessee-Walking-Horses - Breed History
This unique breed was created in the Middle Basin of Tennessee about a hundred years ago. The breed is a product of crossing many other breeds that were brought by the early settlers to the Tennessee region. Those breeds were: Standardbreds, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Canadian and Narrangansett Pacers. Thus having combined the best traits of these breeds, the horse that is known today as a Tennessee Walking Horse appeared. The main feature the horse is known for is its running walk. This gait is an inherited one and cannot be taught. While moving it is swinging its ears. Bobbing of the head accompanies each step. Some of the horses are even known to snap their teeth at the time of walking. When traveling at speed, the horse can walk from 6 to 12 miles an hour.

American Quarter Horses
American Quarter Horses - Overview
Bob Moore Farms American Quarter Horses were named so because of their speed records. The breed was fastest to cover a distance of a quarter a mile. Besides, the breed was very strong and enduring. The American Quarter Horse is well muscled and compact. It has always been used in horse racing and did rather well in it. Even today, quarter-mile racing is one of the most favorite sports. No wonder, the American Quarter Horse is keeping its position as one of the most famous and popular quarter-mile horses. Besides racing, American Quarter Horses are now used for ranches and rodeos. This breed is known to make a good herding horse capable of directing livestock. Cattle roping and barrel racing are just two more talents of this wonderful breed. The American Quarter Horse has brilliant physical and temperament characteristics. Not only is the breed strong and fast. It is very calm, which allows it to be used in recreation for children. American Quarter Horses originated in America by crossing a few breeds of horse. Though breeders and owners have always acknowledged the breed's talents and the number of horses was considerable, no sooner than in 1940 did American Quarter Horses receive their official name.

The seahorse's scientific genus name Hippocampus is a Greek word meaning "bent horse." Depending on the species, seahorses reach lengths fo about 5 to 36 cm (2-14 in.). Seahorses are found in temperate and tropical waters. The longsnout seahorse Hippocampus reidi and the Northern seahorse Hippocampus erectus live in the Caribbean region of the Western Atlantic. The common seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus lives in the Mediterranean Sea and warm areas of the Atlantic. The yellow seahorse Hippocampus kuda lives in the Indo-Pacific. The Pacific seahorse Hippocampus ingens is the only seahorse on the eastern Pacific coast (found from California to Peru). Seahorses are well camouflaged among the eelgrasses and seaweeds in which they make their homes. A seahorse often moors itself in the water by curling its prehensile tail around seagrasses and coral branches. The seahorse's small mouth, located at the end of its narrow tubelike snout, sucks up tiny plankton and fish larvae. Seahorses swim upright. Pectoral fins on the sides and a small dorsal fin on the back of a seahorses's body wave rapidly to move the seahorse through the water.

Morgan Horses - Description
Source:
At High Brook Morgan Horses remain unchanged in the past three centuries. Some selection has been made toward their status as a saddle horse rather than a harness horse. But, its temperament, intelligence, and soundness have not been sacrificed. Morgans are light sport horses. Morgan Horses come in the colors of bay, black, sorrel, gray, palomino, cream, dun, buckskin, chocolate, and chestnut with white, cream, gray or black mane and tail. They shouldn't have any white markings except for spots on the face. One can easily recognize Morgan Horses by their proud carriage, upright graceful neck, and distinctive elegant head with expressive prominent eyes, firm fine lips, large nostrils, and well-rounded jowls. The ears of a purebred Morgan Horse are short and shapely, wide set, and carried alertly. The Morgans are deep-bodied and compact with well-sprung ribs, close coupling, and strongly muscled quarters. The Morgan Horse shouldn't be higher at the croup than at the withers. The throatlatch is slightly deeper than that of other breeds. The top line of the neck should be longer than the bottom line. The legs should be straight with short cannons and a flat bone. Morgan Horses are known for their strong excellent bone and hoof quality. The walk of a purebred Morgan Horse should be rapid, flat-footed step with a four-beat cadence and with the accent on flexion in the pastern. The trot of a Morgan Horse is a two-beat, diagonal beat, elastic and collected. The rear action of the Morgan Horse should be in balance with the front. Morgan Horses were coveted from the turn of the century for their smooth traveling, single footed gait that presented a steady comfortable ride.
