Sea horses beat the odds of surviving
Exhibit closes after 5-1/2 years
Associated Press CHICAGOWhen the Shedd Aquarium opened its Seahorse Symphony exhibit, experts warned it was doomed to fail. The Shedd, they said, would fare no better at keeping sea horses alive than any pet owner would two to four months, at best. That was 5-1/2?years and 10 million visitors ago. The exhibit, which features 20 species of sea horses and closely related sea dragons, snipefish, pipe fish and trumpet fish, finally closes Jan. 4 after a history-making run that was supposed to last only 18 months. "Every few months, we'd turn to each other and say, 'When was this exhibit to be closing?' " said Jeff Boehm, the Shedd's senior vice president for conservation and veterinary services. "And sure enough, it would be extended over and over again. We just kept finding that the popularity was sustained." Along the way, the aquarium made a number of discoveries regarding the care of the eye-catching creatures, and also helped boost efforts to protect sea horses and other marine life.

Posted: April 12, 2004 06:48 AM Well, for the record, I can now say I've seen these crazy "sea horse" looking things, several of you have mentioned over the past few weeks. I found them while intently looking for more burrows and crustaceans. [My Link] [Original JPL Link] I guess I'm just a softy to use up my ftp space to help some of you bozos see this, but I guess if I'm going to make you believers in the top of the food chain, you gotta see the apparent bottom feeders also. It's funny to me now because someone's description of this crazy looking thing, kind of threw me off, at first. I'm also laughing, because I thought some folks on here must have be seeing things, since I could never see one on my own. However, I just didn't know what you meant by "sea horse looking thing," especially with a berry in it's mouth. It's got me thinking hard about a possible food chain in this little ecosystem now. No wonder Dana and the rest of you berry hunters are so interested in these rolly polly pills. There's some kind of food in them, huh? Or excrement, maybe? Something symbiotic going on here you think? See the links in the biology forum for a more detailed study. Excellent work, btw. Since this plant or critter or fungus, or whatever it is, would appear to be at the bottom of the food chain, why is it so hard for soem of you to admit that there's a little ecosystem up there? All you need is a little iron, sulfur, organics, water, heat from the sun, and whala .....apparently you end up with crustacean bunny at the top, eating the other critters. Well, maybe he's not at the top of this food chain, judging from this photo.

Sea horses are interesting animals. Many people don't know that sea horses are actually fish. Their scientific name is Hippo Campus. There are 35 types of sea horses and they have many different colors. Sea horses are in the same family as the pipe fish and sea dragons. They live in shallow, coastal environments. They live above the 50 ft. deep water level. Almost every sea horse is in great danger. It is because they are captured and sold for the aquarium trade. The environment in the aquarium is not suitable for them. They are often sold for reasons, such as to aid research for curing diseases. They are even sold as souvenirs. Some sea horses are also disappearing because of the fishing that disturbs or destroys their home. Water pollution poisons their food, so when they eat the food, they die.
  • Survival Camouflage Can change color when hiding from enemy Curls its tail around its snout and makes itself very small Cirri helps the sea horses. When an animal puts the sea horse in its mouth, the cirri hurts the predator because it is too sharp. So, the animal spits the sea horse out.
  • Sea horses are not active fish. Since they are not active fish, it moves very slowly. So it is hard for sea horses to survive without camouflage. They cannot swim very fast. Also, the cirri on their head helps the sea horses. It is because the cirri is very sharp, so when the predator starts eating the sea horse it spits it out because it is too sharp. Another survival for sea horses are their tail. The tail helps because it is very strong. When a predator tries to pull the sea horse, the sea horse can grab on a corral with its tail, and stay on it so the predator won't be able to pull them away from the fast hold. They are very strong. The only way to pull the sea horse off it's corral or fast hold would be to tickle it gently. Sea horses are very ticklish. Their predators are large fish, birds, crabs, and sea turtles.

SANTIAGO, Chile - A U.N. body voted Wednesday to restrict the international trade of bigleaf mahogany, sea horses, and 26 species of sea turtles but failed to pass legislation to protect two species of threatened sharks. In what conservation groups hailed as a historic decision, the 160 delegates at the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) voted to limit trade of bigleaf mahogany by listing it as a threatened species. Conservationists say the remaining mahogany reserves in the Amazon basin will now receive greater protection from illegal poaching. But Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru - the countries with the largest mahogany reserves - opposed the initiative on the grounds that their conservation measures were sufficient to protect the tropical hardwood tree that has been decimated in recent decades.

A charming, affecting and funny film about coming of age on the road in Israel. This is the story of Yitzhak who want to be like everyone else, to have a driver's licence, and to have a girlfriend. His father Yaakov and Yitzhak own a small company that produces parties and events, mostly in small towns and on Kibbutzim. They provide sound equipment and a female vocalist who sings Israeli songs.
Father and son enjoy a strong relationship, built on trust and comraderie, but they face a major challenge in their business: Yizhak is unable to pass his driver's test because he can't stop crying when he gets behind the wheel. A bittersweet tale unfolds as Yitzhak struggles to get at the root of his problem. His father supports him as best he can as does Yael, the sweet and beautiful young folk singer, with whom Yitzhak is falling in love.

By Dana Africa May 11, 2004 Golden seahorse in the Galapagos Islands Photo by Marc Bernardi Click on photo for more scuba pics When I think of horses I visualize huge, muscular beasts pounding the beach with powerful legs. One would hope that seeing a seahorse underwater might be as obvious. But, unless you have extraterrestrial vision, the little horses in the sea are as difficult to find as a horse on the beach is to miss. Although both animals belong to the gigantic Phylum Vertebrata, and their head shapes appear vaguely alike, the similarities all but end there. The seahorse is a member of the large order Syngnathiformes (sin-NATH-i-forms). This includes such amazing creatures as the cornetfish, trumpetfish, snipefish, razorfish, shrimpfish, and the ghost pipefish. The family Synathidae (sin-NATH-i-day), contains around 30 species of seahorses along with nearly 200 species of their kissing cousins, the pipefish. The Pacific seahorse is the only species of seahorse found on the east side of the Pacific Ocean ranging from California to Peru. The other twenty-nine types are found in more hospitable waters like the Indian Ocean and warmer seas. All seahorses belong to the genus Hippocampus, which roughly translated means "horse monster" (Were Greek seahorses bigger or something when they came up with the name?). We keep calling it a horse, though in fact, it is a bona fide fish.

Sea Horse Sea Horse is a type of small fish that have armored plates all over their body (they don't have scales). There are about 50 different species of Sea Horse around the world. They live in seaweed beds in warm water and are very slow swimmers. Sea Horse can change their color to camouflage (hide) themselves in order to hide from enemies. The most unusual sea horse is the Australian Sea Horse, which has leaf-like amouflage all over its body, making it almost disappear in the seaweed bed. Sea Horse have a long, horse-like head (hence their name) and a curled tail. Sea Horse range in size from under a centimeter long ( Pygmy Sea horse) to about 1 foot (30 cm) long. The female Sea Horse produces eggs, but they are held inside the male's body until they hatch; he is pregnant for about 40 to 50 days. The Sea Horse is the only animal in which the father is pregnant. Some more specific information about Sea Horse: Kingdom: Animalia (animals), Phylum: Chordate, Class: Osteichthyes (bony fish), Order: Gasterosteiformes (armored, small-mouthed fish), Sea Horse Family: Syngnathidae (pipe fish), Genus: Hippocampus (meaning "horse sea monster" in Greek), and many species.
