Sea Urchins Introduction Descriptions Red Sea Urchin Purple Sea Urchin ... References This work is sponsored in part by NOAA Department of Commerce , through the California Sea Grant College Program, and in part by the California State Resources Agency . April 1995 Introduction Sea urchins are members of a large group of marine invertebrates in the phylum Echinodermata (spiny skinned animals), that also include starfish, sea cucumbers, sea lilies, and brittle stars (Kato and Schroeter, 1985; Turgeon, et al., 1988). All sea urchins have a hard calcareous shell called a test, which is covered with a thin epithelium and is usually armed with spines. The spines are used for locomotion, protection, and for trapping drifting algae for food. Between the spines, are tube feet that are used in food capture, locomotion, and for holding on to the substrate. Sea urchins also have small pinchers, called pedicellarine, that are used for defense and for clutching food (Parker and Kalvaas, 1992; Kato and Schroeter, 1985). The mouth is located on the underside. It consists of a complex array of skeletal elements, plates, and teeth arranged in five symmetry called the "Aristotle's lantern." The mouth leads to the digestive tract which empties through the anus located on the top of the test (Kato and Schroeter, 1985).

Recreational Fishing -
Science Helps Sustain Great Lakes Fisheries
STONY BROOK, NY, September 01, 1995 - Nearly destroyed by overexploitation, invasions of nonindigenous species and pollution in the first half of this century, the fisheries of the Great Lakes have undergone a remarkable rebirth. Today, the Great Lakes support world-class recreational fisheries that generate more than $4 billion in regional economic activity. Commercial fisheries generate another $270 million. Through coordinated research and direct interaction with state and federal management agencies over the past 25 years, the region's Sea Grant programs have contributed significantly toward sustained development of these fisheries. Thanks to the scientific data, techniques and new management tools provided by Sea Grant-funded research, Great Lakes fishery policies now are determined more by the lakes' biological capacity than by political and short-term economic pressures.

Activities
A key element of Louisiana Sea Grant activity is transferring research-generated technology to the marketplace through advisory services and education. These activities result from Sea Grant support of university research projects in the natural sciences, engineering, sociology, economics, law, and public policy that address current state, regional and national priorities. The beneficiaries of these actions are higher education human resources government agencies and the private sector Benefits to Higher Education Every Sea Grant dollar invested in higher education returns three dollars to the university and ultimately to the state of Louisiana as new research and expanded research capabilities attract additional research funding. These dollars have been invested in researchers at LSU, LUMCON, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Southern University, Tulane University, University of Louisiana-Lafayette, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University, as well as in undergraduate research opportunities, graduate level university programs, research units, and research partnerships. History, Mission and Organization Michigan Sea Grant is one of the Oldest Sea Grant Programs in the Nation. Michigan Sea Grant, authorized by the United States Senate and House of Representatives, was established in 1969 at the University of Michigan At the time, the Congress mandated that the United States Marine Resources and Engineering Development Act be amended to add Sea Grant Colleges and Programs and that they be managed by the National Science Foundation. Michigan Sea Grant became a partnership between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University in 1977. Senior scientists and administrators from both institutions crafted a unique partnership agreement and solidified the partnership formally. The National Sea Grant awarded Michigan Sea Grant College Program Status, the highest level of achievement possible within the National Sea Grant in 1982. Mission

Research Priorities The research priorities of the New Jersey Sea Grant College Program are both consistent with, and complementary to National Sea Grant College Program's Strategic Plan. Seven relevant areas of research have been identified to meet the long-range needs of New Jersey and the region: ecosystem research, environmental models, coastal zone management, marine technology and development, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture, and socioeconomic and legal studies. Ecosystem Research
  • Understanding the source, nature, amount and fate of pollutants (multiple stressors) in New Jersey estuarine systems and their impacts on the environment and its living resources; Understanding the sources, fates, and effects of nutrients entering the marine environment as a result of human activities; Understanding the sources, fates, and effects on aquatic organisms of pathogens and nuisance species that are introduced or influenced by human activities; Determining the impacts of heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and other toxic pollutants on human users, residents, and marine plants and animals of coastal ecosystems; Documenting trends in the status of marine ecosystems, including changes in abundance and distribution of organisms;

Sea Grant College Program
25 years at sea: MSU and UM in partnership
For a quarter of a century, MSU and the University of Michigan (UM) have found common ground in the Michigan Sea Grant College Program. Begun at UM in 1969 and headquartered there, the program expanded into a partnership with MSU in 1977. That 25-year collaboration was celebrated this month with a seminar and reception for researchers, legislators, and other partners at the Michigan State Historical Museum in Lansing. The National Sea Grant College Program began in 1966 with funding from the National Science Foundation. Like the Land-Grant concept it’s modeled on, the Sea Grant Program extends research results to communities near bodies of water. With the creation of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 1972, the National Sea Grant College Program transferred to that agency. Michigan’s program receives additional funding from state, tribal, business, and other sources to carry out scientific and educational programs in the Great Lakes region. Extension agents have helped thousands of coastal residents, decision-makers, and resource managers in resolving problems, recognizing opportunities, and broadening understanding of the Great Lakes. Research results appear in hundreds of
