NY Sea Grant Institute Leads Fishing Public to Freshwater Info, Issues
Oswego Daily News
Submitted by New York Sea Grant
Through two Great Lakes Fisheries Leadership Institute workshops sponsored and led by New York Sea Grant, New York's fishing community is learning the latest information on freshwater fisheries management, the Great Lakes food webs, invasive species, fish stocking and current research. Ed Sander, a Monroe County Fisheries Advisory Board member and an advisor to the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, attended the Lake Ontario workshop (a second workshop was held on Lake Erie). Sander will share what he learned with the boards he serves and with sportfishing clubs and charter boat associations. "In addition to the habitat and ecology information, I will emphasize uncertainty and its effect on fisheries management, and the role of invasives," Sander says. "The key issue for the Great Lakes is to absolutely get control of invasive species - they are the single most disruptive factor in the system.

New Fisheries Leadership School in Session
“Almost all Great Lakes fisheries issues involve stakeholders weighing in on management options,” said Brian Miller, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant associate director. “Through the Great Lakes Sea Grant Fisheries Leadership Institute we hope to provide emerging citizen fishery leaders the fundamental background in science and ecology necessary to make educated choices related to fisheries management.” The new institute will operate on a regional, lake and state level to help foster the next generation of fisheries leaders. In addition to members of sport-fishing associations, commercial fishermen and charter captains, participants in this program may include representatives from environmental non-profit governmental organizations and tribes. They are nominated by their member organization and approved by a selection committee. “We hope to create an atmosphere that provides effective communication between fisheries organizations and Great Lakes biologists,” said Chad Dolan, IISG fisheries extension specialist.

Emory D. Anderson Named Sea Grant Fisheries Program Director
WASHINGTON D.C. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has named Dr. Emory D. Anderson program director for fisheries at NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program Office in Silver Spring, Md. Dr. Anderson will work on enhancing coordination between Sea Grant and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service. "Dr. Anderson's career as a professional in fisheries science has spanned nearly 30 years, with broad experience at the national and international levels in both research and administration, experience that seems tailor-made for his new position with Sea Grant," said Dr. Ronald Baird, director of the National Sea Grant College Program. He most recently served as a senior scientist for NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Center in Woods Hole, Mass. There he was chairman of the Northeast Regional Stock Assessment Workshop process, which is responsible for performing assessments of fisheries resources off the northeast U.S. coast between North Carolina and Canada. He also served as the center's liaison to the New England Fishery Management Council and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. He received a B.S. in education (mathematics) from Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, in 1961 and a Ph.D. in fisheries biology from the University of Minnesota in 1969.

    fish oil and your health
by Paul B. Addis, Ph.D. INTRODUCTION The discovery that fish oil may have unique benefits in the fight against coronary heart disease has stimulated a tremendous amount of research which this publication summarizes. Although the subject is complex, the study of fish oils is very worthwhile because it provides a totally new perspective on the relationship of diet to coronary heart disease.
THE BENEFITS OF FISH OIL Fish oil has many names. One of the most common is omega-3 fatty acid or its scientific abbreviation, N-3 . N3 fatty acids are found mostly in fish, but are contained in other foods as well. Fish oil is the best food source of these fatty acids. The primary benefit of N-3 fish oil is the reduction of platelet activity (blood clotting) and plaque formation which in turn can prevent heart attacks. Here's how it works. Platelets are clot-forming blood cells which prevent excessive bleeding. Overly active platelets, however, may speed the build-up of plaque, a deposit of fatty or fibrous material which narrows a blood vessel wall. Elevated blood cholesterol also contributes to the acceleration of plaque formation. When plaque narrows an artery it is easier for a blood clot to get stuck in the artery and this can cause a heart attack. Because platelets also form blood clots, this is likely to occur. That's why it is desirable to reduce platelet activity and why N-3 fatty acid, fish oil, is beneficial.

    (Suminoe Oyster)
With the entrenchment of MSX and Dermo disease in Chesapeake Bay, particularly in Virginia's high salinity waters, researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) began exploring the potential of another non-indigenous species, the Asian oyster Crassostrea ariakensis, that gave indications of disease resistance. VIMS researchers undertook controlled studies by spawning larvae in the hatchery and rendering them infertile so that they could not reproduce on reaching adult size. Field trials were initially conducted at low, medium and high salinity sites between June 1998 and September 1999; researchers compared survival, growth and disease susceptibility between triploid C. ariakensis and diploid (fertile) C. virginica , the native oyster. At low salnity sites, for example, mortality of C. ariakensis was 14% compared with 81% for C. virginica . At medium and high salinity sites, mortaltiy of C. ariakensis was under 15% compared with the death of all C. virginica

II Fisheries Home Proper release of marine fishes has become increasingly important to anglers. In order to maintain healthy fish populations, each angler is responsible for carefully handling fish that are hooked, and releasing fish that not harvested so they can spawn or perhaps be caught again.
Reef fish may require special handling during release to decrease mortality. This information is based on the best available research regarding reef fish venting as interpreted by a Florida Sea Grant Advisory Panel assembled to review this research. Although the authors realize the need for further study of the influence of venting on long-term reef fish survival, sufficient information exists to warrant providing guidelines to assist anglers in successful release practices. How to Vent A Fish (Watch the Video from Mote Marine) Printer Friendly Version The Problem Procedure Tools Guidelines The Problem
Many marine reef fish have a gas-filled organ called a swimbladder, which controls buoyancy and allows the fish to maintain a certain depth in the water column. The gas in the swimbladder can over-expand when fish are brought quickly to the surface by hook and line. This can result in serious injury to the fish, and if released in this buoyant condition, the fish may float away and die from exposure to the elements or become an easy target for predators. This defeats the purpose of fishery management laws such as minimum size restrictions and daily bag limits.

Recreational and commercial fisheries comprise multi-billion dollar industries in Florida. Increasing demands for both high quality seafood products and memorable recreational fishing opportunities have placed increased pressure on the stocks of finfish and shellfish species which inhabit the coastal waters of Florida. Increased usage associated with this demand dictates the need for more effective fisheries management programs. Effective management requires knowledge on the life history of the target species, sustainable catch levels, appropriate distribution of the catch among commercial and recreational users, by-catch associated with different types of fishing gear, impact of fishing activities on essential habitats, and many other issues. Biological, economic, and social expertise must be brought to bear by research and educational programs in a manner such that the sustainable use of Florida's marine finfish and shellfish resources can be ensured.

R ecreational and commercial fisheries are a vital part of Michigan’s heritage. Each year more than 1.4 million licensed anglers fish the state’s Great Lakes waters, catching species such as salmon (an introduced species), walleye, perch, small mouth bass, steelhead and trout. Commercial species vary with each lake and may include such fish as lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, lake herring and yellow perch. Combined, sport and commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes are valued at more than $4 billion annually. The health of our fisheries depends upon continuing research and education. Fish populations change in response to such factors as aquatic nuisance species, habitat loss and pollution. Michigan Sea Grant conducts scientific research aimed at understanding fish populations in order to provide a basis for sound fishery management. Sea Grant's extension agents
