Timeline
Rhode Island Sea Grant researchers and Fisheries Extension has a 30-year history working with fishermen, regulators, aquaculturists, seafood handlers and processors and others to improve fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood safety and quality. This timeline presents the broad expertise Fisheries Extension offers. Early 1970s Researchers helped fishermen catch the most possible fish with the least consumption of fuel by increasing size of fishing net opening to increase capacity and reduce drag. URI 340 fishing net, created at University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, one of the biggest breakthroughs in fishing gear technology. Held annual Fishermen's Forums, teaching hundreds of New England fishermen about the latest fishing techniques and equipment, and legal, financial and resource issues. Introduced successful European fishing techniques to New England. Developed a process to make Fish Protein Concentrate (FPC), a protein supplement, at about 2/3 the cost of other methods. This created a new use for "trash" fish.

News Northeast Regional Bycatch Workshop taking place June 29 to July 1, 2004 Because a regional approach is important when addressing a regional resource, the Northeast Sea Grant Fisheries Extension programs work cooperatively as well as independently on fisheries management issues, including bycatch reduction, licensing, habitat, and stock assessment. This cooperative work has been furthered by the National Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Enhancement Initiative, a Congressional mandate intended to provide fisheries extension programming to stakeholder groups at local, regional, and national levels; to promote collaboration among federal and state fisheries agencies, management councils, and constituents to resolve fisheries issues; and to expand information exchange among all groups. As part of this initiative, Northeast Sea Grant Fisheries Extension programs have participated several projects, and information on some of those projects is available here, with more to follow soon:

Fisheries
Recreational and commercial fisheries are a vital part
of Michigan's heritage. Each year more than 1.4
million licensed anglers fish the state's Great Lakes
waters, catching species such as salmon (an introduced species), walleye, perch, small mouth bass, steelhead and trout. Commercial species vary with each lake and may include such fish as lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, lake herring, and yellow perch. Combined, sport and commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes are valued at more than $4 billion annually. The health of our fisheries depends upon continuing research and education. Fish populations change in response to such factors as aquatic nuisance species, habitat loss and pollution. Michigan Sea Grant conducts scientific research aimed at understanding fish populations in order to provide a basis for sound fishery management. Sea Grant's extension agents located around the state conduct regional fishery workshops to convey up-to-date research information, provide training and technical assistance to fishery businesses, and work to foster continued cooperation among a variety of user groups.

Addressing Fisheries Issues in the Modern Era The goal of the Sea Grant Fisheries Initiative is to provide the nation with information required for managing fisheries in an environmentally sensitive, economically sound and sustainable manner through an integrated research and outreach program. Sea Grant seeks to address fisheries issues in nine key areas (new approaches to fisheries management, population dynamics, socio-economics, advanced sampling technology, stock enhancement, essential fisheries habitat, harvest technology/conservation engineering, fisheries oceanography and Great Lakes fisheries) in partnership with state and Federal natural resource agencies and organizations and with stakeholders. It is a joint effort of the Connecticut and New York Sea Grant Extension programs, serving as the liaisons between the research community and the lobster industry, facilitating the Lobster Mortality Research Steering Committee activities and actions, organizing and hosting the annual LIS lobster health symposia, and keeping the public informed as to the status of the lobster resource and the progress of the lobster research efforts. Regional Fish Gear Mapping Project This regional project is a collaboration between the Sea Grant programs of the Northeast and the fishing industry, led by MIT Sea Grant. The goal of the project is to develop a GIS database of fixed and mobile gear fishing areas and boundaries based on data obtained from commercial fishermen in the Northeast. The data will be integrated into map products that will be useful to resource managers and fishermen in developing and assessing the extent and impact of fishing activities and fisheries management policies, with the goal of helping to achieve sustainable fisheries while minimizing the associated economic effects. Lobsterman Michael Theiler is working with CTSG Extension on this project, collecting data from fishermen in Connecticut.

Emory D. Anderson Named Sea Grant Fisheries Program Director
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has named Dr. Emory D. Anderson program director for fisheries at NOAA's National Sea Grant College Program Office in Silver Spring, Md. Dr. Anderson will work on enhancing coordination between Sea Grant and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service "Dr. Anderson's career as a professional in fisheries science has spanned nearly 30 years, with broad experience at the national and international levels in both research and administration, experience that seems tailor-made for his new position with Sea Grant," said Dr. Ronald Baird, director of the National Sea Grant College Program. He most recently served as a senior scientist for NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Center in Woods Hole, Mass. There he was chairman of the Northeast Regional Stock Assessment Workshop process, which is responsible for performing assessments of fisheries resources off the northeast U.S. coast between North Carolina and Canada. He also served as the center's liaison to the New England Fishery Management Council and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. He received a B.S. in education (mathematics) from Dana College, Blair, Neb., in 1961 and a Ph.D. in fisheries biology from the University of Minnesota in 1969.

April 2000: Fisheries Past Topics Press Releases Fisheries have historically played a large role in the Northeastern United States, both economically and culturally. In recent years, depleted stocks of once abundant species and regulations imposed to bring back those stocks have seriously impacted commercial fishermen through closures, days-at-sea restriction, vessel buyouts, and other mandated effort controls. Such effects have also severely impacted whole communities in which fishing has been a way of life. Now, however, depleted stocks seem poised for a rebound, and the industry and communities that they support are at a crossroads. more Back to School with Bluefin Tuna: A New Approach to Stock Assessment
