Pushpa Chari Largely hereditary artisanal groups, later structured into "Jaatis" of goldsmiths, potters etc - carried forward and created these evolving craft expressions individually, in ateliers or karkhanas for the functional ritualistic decorative needs of both commoner and the rich "Jajmans" in ancient and medieval Indian society. In a sense the Mughal karkhana was perhaps the country's first modern studio-cum-atelier where a new philosophy of Persian art and craft skills was taught, gradually melding with, and shaping, the Indian craft ethos, to usher in one of the brilliant flowering of arts and crafts history has ever seen.... The fabled tapestry of India's hoary crafts - from sublime stone sculpture to the finest of muslins and silks, exquisitely carved ivory and marble, wonderously crafted jewellery, ritual and functional vessels and much else - suffered its first stinging blow with the coming of the industrial revolution. In the 17th century, writer-jeweller Tavernier wrote glowingly of India's fabled craft and Pyland de Leval referred to the "adroitly wonderous manufacturers of Inde". By the 19th century, Indian textiles had given way to machine made cloth, and factory made goods had pushed craft to near oblivion. Kamal Sahai
Simultaneously, the entry of non-governmental agencies, as well as individual artists, designers, fashion and style gurus, architects and product designers has played a vital role in setting new directions for craft growth and development as well as created new palettes and textures of craft expression.

Passionate. Sensitive. Classic. Full of natural, fluid movement - as though the subject is about to walk off the pedestal. Sensual. Full of life and motion; an intuitive artist that creates form from mere substance. These are just a few of the things that art lovers have said about the work of artist Kelly Borsheim.
borsheimarts.com is the official site of Borsheim Arts Studio, featuring the figurative bronze and stone sculptures, as well as paintings created by this US-based artist. While Kelly's paintings of the human body are often described as abstract, her 3-dimensional work is somewhat classically representational, detailed, and fluid. Her knowledge of human anatomy allows her to create sensitive artworks of grace that one art collector described as "daring yet sophisticated. She respects the balance of modesty and [the] erotic and blends it to create the human spirit for what it truly is." Another viewer said, "She has such a wonderful understanding of the materials she uses that she creates beautifully natural art, full of expression and movement."
Artist Kelly Borsheim was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States of America in 1964. After moving to central Texas, her art career started off in photography, specifically lab work and later photo restoration. In 1992, she studied line, tone, and then color for a year before going out on her own to draw from life. In late 1994, she began to study sculpture at the Elisabet Ney Sculpture Conservatory. Kelly later enhanced these studies by attending various workshops at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts in Colorado.

I'm Ropata Davis. I'm an artist/carver, author, researcher and poet. For me, art has been an enjoyable life-long passion and happy past-time. I'm 54 years of age and a born-again Bahai, and live in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa, where about 2000 years ago, one of my tribal connections, the Waiohua, originally settled this large Auckland Isthmus area. Although I am a self-taught carver (I prefer the word artist, simply because I also paint, sketch, design, and write poetry), and I am also lucky enough to be a published author.
I came from a poor working-class family background. But even as a youngster, art always held an impassioned and fascinating appeal for me. This actually held me in good stead many years later, when I literally turned by life-long craft hobby into a business that I operated out of my humble garage-come-workshop-come-studio.
My inspirational influences come from my cultural heritage and even from many old European masters, such as Leonard Da Vinci, an all-time supreme artist, sculptor, carver, engineer, designer and architect. His work more than any other has had a huge impact on me and inspired me to strive for excellence in my own art. However, my many original contemporary designs have mainly come from the greatest designer of all, Mother Nature. She has supplied many of the materials I use in my carvings: crystals, stone, jade, wood, bone, ivory, shell, and teeth from stranded whales. I have also carved with antlers, animal horns, and tusks from wild boars and elephants, and even from a walrus. Many of these were given to me by friends and the people who owned these rare pieces. Some of the man-made materials that I have carved have been glass, concrete, plastic, a billiard ball, and even a (lawn) bowling ball, to mention just a few.

Overview
Polychromy and Monochromy Images for the Cult and for Private Devotion
A sculpture is created either by adding material to a core or removing it from a block. In the additive method, the sculptor builds up his work from the inside out in a soft material, generally clay or wax; the clay is then hardened by firing, while the wax is destroyed when the form is cast in bronze . The subtractive method is much more common in the late Middle Ages.
Over half of the sculptures produced in the late medieval period were carved from wood ( Saint Anthony Abbot
Equal mastery of wood and stone sculpture is a technical achievement, since the two materials present different qualities ( Virgin and Child ). Stone is brittle because of its crystalline structure, while wood is tougher because of its cellular structure. Although stone breaks easily if dropped or struck, it offers greater resistance to precision cutting with a chisel than wood does. The sculptor must therefore combine physical strength with a steady hand, removing material little by little as he works toward the intended form.
