Curriculum
Courses
Sculpture is one of the oldest forms of art, and as sculptors, we are heirs to a tradition that forms an invaluable record of past civilizations. Although we can learn a great deal from this heritage, we must observe our present society through the eyes of a contemporary artist and express our vision in an appropriate manner. After all, even though we may think that the clothes of a century ago were very elegant, we would never dream of wearing them today. Modern industry produces many new types of materials, such as steel, cement, plastics, glass, and aluminum. These new materials not only bring significant changes to our lifestyles, but also affect our notion of what sculpture is and can be. It is imperative that we use new materials and technology to create new and bold sculptural images for our present-day society.
Students in the Department of Sculpture acquire basic skills by working with shapes observed in nature and undergo instruction in various practical techniques. They then proceed to more personal areas of self-expression. Close student-faculty relations are essential for the exchange of ideas and the development of sculptural concepts; however, although the faculty is always ready to give advice and guidance to students, it is important for each student to develop an independent and self-sufficient attitude towards sculptural practice.

http://collections.ic.gc.ca/sculpture/ie/about.html
About Sculpture: Form and Function Sculpture is a three-dimensional art form that provides an important visual way of understanding form and space. What will always remain the concern of the sculptor is the manipulation of a solid, material body, whether stone, wood, clay or bronze. Whatever its form or shape, whether figurative or abstract, sculpture functions to make us aware of our environment, our space within it and our special connection and relationship within this shared space. There are many types of sculpture; portrait busts, allegorical and equestrian figures, funerary, garden sculpture, figurines. Public sculpture has traditionally been associated with commemorative monuments or architectural sculpture. Abstraction and assemblage are the dominant forms of modern sculpture. Yet it seems that the human form remains a consistent concern for the sculptor; a concern that re-emerges time and again and confirms man's innate need to fashion his or her own image. Sculpture functions as an integral part of many ceremonies and events. Often unnoticed, it gives us a visual reference for our emotional experiences throughout the passages of life. Tombstones, for example, are a form of sculpture commemorating death, a universal event.

Ceramics Department Advanced ceramics techniques were introduced to Japan from China during the fifth and sixth centuries, and were further developed in many places in this country. As with tea ceremony, Japanese ceramics evolved into an art form placing aesthetic values ahead of function, an excellence now recognized all over the world. To step into this traditional field, students previously had to enter an apprenticeship or a specialized school. The ceramics curriculum that we have developed at Kyoto Seika University is more appropriate to this university`s atmosphere, emphasizing a view of ceramics as a modern and creative art form, using clay as a medium of self-expression. We encourage students to be imaginative and diverse in their thinking. We do not believe in teaching ceramics: instead, we believe that our job is to stimulate the creativity of each individual. Students must themselves overcome the initial obstacles that occur when working in this field. During our four-year program, students absorb the technical side as well as the human side of this art form. These two aspects cannot be separated, as techniques are always selected according to human considerations.
