Healy's Hand Carved Menagerie: "a glimpse of wildlife to hold in your hand"
My hand carved basswood animals are stylized according to my own interpretation*, and they are not quite figures in the round. Within their inch thickness, using carving and painting techniques, I suggest a more fully round figure. It is a unique style, and allows the creation of a beautiful sculpture for an affordable price. Click the roadrunner to dash to a world of wild mammals, birds, sea animals, and more, as well as some information about my work, and ordering information. Enjoy it all! *My interpretation: when you see an animal in the wild you notice, not the details of each feather, scale, or hair, but rather an impression of shape and color. I wish to express the way a wild, not captive, animal looks.

ART AND ARCHITECTURE
More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers began to teem with lifefirst the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. From Sumeria have come examples of fine works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuli. Of the many portraits produced in this area, some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble, others, such as the one in the Louvre in Paris, are cut in gray-black diorite. Dating from about 2400 BC, they have the smooth perfection and idealized features of the classical period in Sumerian art. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex. Clay was the Sumerians' most abundant material. Stone, wood, and metal had to be imported. Art was primarily used for religious purposes. Painting and sculpture was the main median used. Marble Statues The famous votive stone/ marble sculptures from Tell Asmar represent tall, bearded figures with huge, staring eyes and long, pleated skirts. Enlarged eyes were found on many statues The tallest figure is about 30 inches in height. He represents the god of vegetation. The next tallest represents a mother goddess-mother goddesses were common in many ancient cultures. They were worshipped in the hope that they would bring fertility to women and to crops. (Another connection to African culture.)

Sonya Moran Born in London, England in 1963, Sonya studied art throughout high school before going on to complete a nursing degree. Seemingly satisfied with this safe career option, Sonya worked as a nurse for 6 years after completing her studies. In 1986 Sonya took an extended break from nursing to travel, and eventually made her way to a popular tourist destination, Hamilton Island, Australia. There she met Foot Young, an American Sculptor. Entranced by the living nature of marble sculpture, Sonya decided to stay on an re-examine her earlier passion for art, now that such an exciting medium had presented itself. For four years she worked and studied with Foot, learning the fundamentals of carving form in driftwood and marble, as well as learning mould making techniques. Sonya started exhibiting her work in the Hamilton Island Gallery the year she arrived. Since that inaugural moment, Sonya has now taken part in over 35 exhibitions and sold her work by com mission to private collectors throughout Australia and the world In 1990 Sonya moved to the Australian mainland to set up her own studio. In 1993 moved her studio to the alternative creative nucleus of Australia, Byron Bay where she is still based. In that time she has produced hundreds of works her inspiration coming from the natural beauty that surrounds Byron Bay, and from her extensive and continuing travels around the world.

X3D WORLD Education Art Art FEATURE: Sculpture in 3D by Ruben Torrejon if(!isOld) document.write('Loading...'); Sculpture in 3D A sculpture is a work of three-dimensional art. It is perhaps the oldest form of art, as crude prehistoric sculptures carved from bones and ivory far outdate the earliest known cave drawings and paintings. Sculpture can be created using just about any raw material (the most common are clay, marble, bronze, wood, and ivory) and employing just about any technique. Some common techniques include chiseling marble with a hammer and chisel, pouring molten bronze into a mold and carving wood with a knife.
The purposes of creating sculpture vary greatly. Sculpture may be created with a practical or purely aesthetic goal in mind depending upon the creator. A sculpture can be a work of art without any "purpose" such as an expressive shape. It can be a work of art with a very specific purpose, such as the bust or a full body likeness of an individual (or more exactly, the replica mold of a person's body part, such as a baby's foot). Sculpture can also be an adornment to something practical, such as the carved handle of a knife or a gargoyle chipped into the side of a marble arch. But usually, whatever the medium and whatever the purpose in mind, a sculpture is created with the intent to embody an idea or an ideal the creator wants to express in a three-dimensional medium.

It is built of 92 pieces of stone, and the carving was completed over a 10 month period. Carved from two types of limestone, Indiana Limestone and a golden brown Minnesota limestone, two bronze frogs sit on the edge of the pool spouting water. Water shoots out the top, cascades down, and flows from the mouths of the three lions. The central part of the fountain features a lion; water spouts from its mouth. On the bowl above its head rests a bundle of four Romanesque columns, topped by another bowl.

    http://www.africarving.com/african_art_stone_carvings.html
Shona Stone Carvings and African Art Sculptures
We have been interested in the Shona stone carvings of southern Africa such as the ones shown in this African art catalog for many years. During that time we have put together a large collection of African art stone carvings, displayed prominently throughout our home. Although our pieces come from diverse locations such as Malawi and Botswana, our principal sources of supply today are the Shona tribe, one of the largest ethnic population groups in Zimbabwe. Typical of the variety of lovely work done by the Shona people are the Christmas decorations and ceramic candle holders shown in our "featured" section.
    Shona Artists and Crafts People
Shona artists and crafts people have been working in different media for generations. These include paintings, pottery, basket ware, wood carvings, and sculpture done in metal as well as the stone carvings illustrated in our African art catalog . While there is not a long standing tradition of sculpture in what is now Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), stone carvings dating from the 15th century were seen in Great Zimbabwe, an excavated temple near Bulawayo. Most of the artifacts from this location have been moved to museums in Cape Town, South Africa or London. It is generally agreed that Zimbabwean stone sculpture as seen today began during the late colonial period of the 1950's and 1960's. During this period the artists and artisans depicted many of the traditional
