Our goal in the Art Department of Alpena High School is to help students think creatively, problem solve, and express themselves. We will accomplish this by teaching students to appreciate and interpret their world through a variety of artistic experiences. We realize that in today's society it is essential to develop creative thinking and problem solving skills for every aspect of life. In the art curriculum, students will use these skills for every project and exercise they do.

Westcott Bay Reserve on San Juan Island is a nineteen-acre microcosm of the San Juan ecology: forests, meadows, freshwater wetlands, saltwater wetlands, and rocky outcroppings. The trails throughout the Reserve are interspersed with interpretative displays about nature and a rotating exhibit of over 100 sculptures, creating an outdoor museum for families, and friends. The sculptures include works in bronze, stone, wood, metal, glass and ceramic by noted artists from the San Juan Islands and all around the Pacific Northwest
In 2003, over 30,000 guests visited the Reserve, arriving by boat, bicycle, moped, plane, seaplane on foot and by car. Through their letters of support and during their visits, guests consistently share their sense of pleasure about the integration of the art forms within the natural settings. Each year the Reserve hosts a variety of events listed below. The Westcott Bay Institute (a non-profit organization) manages the Reserve which officially opened on September 8th, 2001. The Reserve is made possible through the generous dedication of land by Roche Harbor Resort, the hard work of many volunteers, and contributions of materials and funds from local sponsors and global visitors. Site maps and a donation box are located at the entrance.

Chicago, U.S.A. I carve sculpture in limestone and marble, using traditional tools and techniques which I learned as an apprentice in Italy and as a journeyman carver on the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. This site is filled with examples of the work I created with these skills, including my gargoyles and stone fireplaces Stone carving tools have not changed significantly since the technique of forging steel was developed. The pneumatic hammer was introduced between 1885 and 1890 (powered by huge steam driven air compressors), and has pretty much replaced the wooden mallet and iron hammer. Carbide tipped tools began appearing in the middle of the 20th century. Most limestone carvers still prefer the old hand forged chisels, and keep a wooden mallet close at hand. The basic concepts of carved stone work haven't changed much in thousands of years, even as the tools have slowly evolved. The three basic types of chisels remain the same: a point for roughing out the stone, tooth chisels (also called claw tools) for shaping and modeling the forms, and flat chisels for the finished surfaces and details. Within each class there are endless variations; for example gouges, bull-noses and miter tools are all variations on the flat chisel. Measuring and copying of designs is done in a variety of ways, depending on the requirements of the job. Architectural moldings can be cut using templets (now cut from plastic instead of the traditional zinc), which are traced on the stone. Many carvings can be done by eye, copying a drawing or rough clay or plaster model. For example, when carving my

      Techniques and Materials
The principal sculptural techniques have undergone little change throughout the ages. Hand modeling in wax (see wax figures , or clay remains unaltered, although the firing of the clay from simple terra-cotta to elaborately glazed ceramics has varied greatly. Carving has for centuries made use of such varied materials as stone, wood, bone, and, more recently, plastics, and carvers have long employed many types of hammers, chisels, drills, gauges, and saws. For carrying out monumental works from small studies, various mechanical means have been developed for approximating the proportions of the original study. Bronze casting is also a technique of extreme antiquity (see bronze sculpture ). The Greeks and Chinese mastered the
