What is sculpture?

The word sculpture originates from the Latin word sculpere Techniques
Carving
Dating from pre-historic times, carving is a process in which the artist subtracts or cuts away from a solid material to reach the desired form. It can be a very painstaking and time consuming method because of the hard and weighty materials, such as marble or other stones, that are often used. However, artists also carve softer substances such as wood and even soap. Modeling
Casting
Casting is a method of obtaining the permanence of a modeled work by making a mold and casting it in a durable material such as bronze. Two methods of casting are used: sand casting and the cire-perdue or "lost wax" process. The lost-wax process is more widely used, however, both have been frequently employed since antiquity. (Further information on lost wax casting will follow.) Construction and Assemblage
Emerging in the twentieth-century, the techniques of assemblage and construction consist of combining and joining various materials to form a three-dimensional object. These methods originated from the technique collage , which was popularized by the Cubists during the early part of the twentieth century.

Billy Lee Course Objectives The objectives are to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of making sculpture. This includes conceptual development, honing perceptual skills and the understanding of materials, tools, and processes as these pertain to the language of sculpture. Fundamentals principles of sculptural language such as form, space, gravity, and structure will be addressed. These in turn, are broken down into further categories of balance, tension, light, mass, volume etc. Three problems in three different materials will be assigned, such
as carving, modeling and constructing in various materials of wood, steel, clay, wax, or soft stone. The course will start with the introduction of the history of sculpture from Rodin to present day. Three one hour videos will be shown, ‘Masters of Modern Sculpture,’ followed by discussions. Throughout the semester a series of demonstrations on materials, tools, equipment, and processes will be given. There is also a shop orientation
with emphasis on safety. Attendance is mandatory. Throughout the semester, examples will be cited or shown. It is the students responsibility to research these suggestions and examples.

Book: Concrete Handbook for Artists: Technical Notes for Small-scale Objects More information? I have found only a few good books on using concrete and cement as an art material. Your input and suggestions are increasing the list. Concrete Handbook for Artists: Technical Notes for Small-scale Objects , is my own new book. It's based on this web site but has a lot more information. 135 pages, 7.5" X 9", black and white photos and line drawings. Paperback binding (lay-flat). ISBN 0-9730223-0-2. Initially it is only available through this web site. Cost is $26.95 USD or $34.95 CAD plus shipping. More information? Top of the list for other books would be Making Concrete Garden Ornaments (former title: Creating With Concrete : Yard Art, Sculpture, and Garden Projects ) by Sherri Warner Hunter, Lark Books, 2002, ISBN: 1579903185 [order from amazon.com] . (And I'm not just saying this because some of my work is in the book...) The book has excellent instructions for different types of concrete for many different techniques: casting, armatures, using foam, carving, surface treatments. There are also many projects to follow about half the book with excellent photographs. Hunter, a Tennessee sculptor, has really done her technical research, and she's got the right idea in using different mixes for different purposes. This book is all you need to start and continue to learn with. I recommend it highly.

    The Artist Speaks
"All my sculpture is direct carving in stone; I don't do any drawings or make models because I don't want preconceived ideas to prevent me from making the most of the carving process. It's often the character and shape of the stone that suggests the subject and I like the carving itself to be the creative act. My work is based mainly on the human figure which seems to me the most natural and beautiful subject for sculpture; there is no end to the variety of forms that it leads to. I also like to explore the forms and textures which result from the choice of varying stones, and the use of different carving techniques and tools. "Stones I have used range from alabaster, which is so soft you can scratch it with your finger-nail, through the building stones of Portland and the rough textured Cotswold stones to the very hard carboniferous stones which are usually crushed for making roads. Most of the work is suitable for the garden, only a few small pieces definitely need to be indoors. The durability and long life of stone is well known; it can be measured in hundreds of years and the effects of age and weathering tend to enhance its natural beauty.
