Recreational scuba diving in Caribbean Marine Protected Areas: do the users pay?
Green, E.; Donnelly, R. / International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) There are more than 200 marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Caribbean and Central America that contain coral reefs and are therefore theoretically attractive to scuba divers. This study surveyed one fifth of dive operators in 30 countries for their use of MPAs. Key findings were:
  • the majority are located within 20 km of at least one MPA
  • 46% conduct at least 80% of their diving within a MPA
  • An estimated 15 million dives take place outside of Florida each year, half of these occurring inside MPAs
  • Only 25% of MPAs containing coral reefs charge divers an entry or user fee, which is most usually USD 2–3 levied per dive or per diver
  • The revenue generated by these fees is estimated at USD 1–2 million annually, but the potential for generating income has not been fully realized.

UCSC RECREATIONAL DIVING PROGRAM (OPERS)
UCSC's Recreational Scuba Program is based on the idea of safe communal sharing of experiences, no matter what your experience level may be. We encourage divers of all skill levels to become a part of our diving community. We have a place and role for all those with enthusiasm to guide and learn from others. Successful completion of UCSC Scuba courses result in National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) certification which is recognized worldwide. Contact the OPERS office or (831)-459-4518 for course fees and schedules.
Medical clearance from UCSC's Cowell Health Center is required for all UCSC scuba diving. Medical insurance that covers diving injuries and medical evacuation (ex. Diver's Alert Network membership and insurance) is strongly recommended for all UCSC scuba divers. Students register for these courses and pay course fees at the Office of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (OPERS)
The UCSC Scuba Club is a recreational club open to all interested scuba divers who are either UCSC students or Recreational card holders. Members must be certified scuba divers from a nationally recognized agency, have medical clearance from the Cowell Health Center, pass a scuba skills tests, provide proof of diving accident insurance and pay an annual fee to be a member. Members are allowed to use the OPERS scuba equipment (tanks, BCs, regulators, consoles, lead) for the club dives. Members should have their own basic skin diving gear and have access to the following: exposure suit, timing device, underwater light and knife. Dives are lead by club dive supervisors (Instructors, Divemasters or Assistant Instructors) and consist of both skin and scuba dives. Weekly meetings are held to plan club trips and diving activities, and hear guest speakers talk a diverse array of diving topics. Contact Steve Clabuesch

In short, scuba diving is an underwater activity practiced with the help of equipment worn by the diver which provides a supply of breathing gas allowing the diver to remain underwater for long periods. There are two types of SCUBA equipment:
  • the Aqua-Lung - a system consisting of a tank or diving cylinder containing a high pressure breathing gas and diving regulator that supplies the diver with that gas at a pressure suitable for the depth of the diver. This type of SCUBA equipment is known as 'open circuit' because exhaled gas is lost to the environment.

Trampling On Reef-Flat Communities
Julie P. Hawkins and Callum M. Roberts
Research Center, Sharim-el- Sheikh, Egypt ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of trampling by scuba divers and snorkelers on reef-flats of coral reefs near Sharim-el- Sheikh, a popular resort in Egypt. There were significantly more damaged coral colonies and loose fragments of live coral rocks in heavily trampled areas. Percentage cover of bare rock and rubble was also significantly greater; conversely numbers of hard coral colonies and total percentage of live coral cover were lower. Coral colonies were smaller in trampled compared to control areas, with average height and diameter significantly less in heavily trampled areas. An area regularly visited be snorkelers exhibited intermediate effects. Coral species composition and the relative abundances of different coral growth forms did nor appear to be affected by the trampling. Several of the effects detected differed between outer and middle zones of the reef flat, suggesting that some communities were more vulnerable to trampling than others.

Background Slightly more than one year ago, I became interested in scuba diving (actually, my younger daughter, Amy, became interested, and I did not want to miss out on all the fun). However, before I could scuba dive, I needed to receive certification from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) [ The PADI certification process includes six hours of classroom instruction, six lessons in an indoor pool, and finally four “open water” dives, during which a student has to demonstrate a number of competencies. After being certified as a PADI “Open Water Diver”, an individual can purchase scuba equipment and have air tanks refilled. [As an aside, this is one of the few areas where the government has not gotten involved in licensure; PADI and one other similar organization, NAUI, are self-regulating.] I was fortunate to be able to receive my classroom instruction and make my pool dives under the supervision of Mr. Brad Knopp, at Midwest Scuba in Champaign, Illinois, and then he referred me to the Red Sail Sports dive shop on Grand Cayman Island [ ], where I completed my PADI certification in March 1999. I subsequently had two more dives in the Cayman Islands, six dives this past summer on the Kona coast of the big island of Hawaii, two more dives in December 1999 off the coast of Oahu [
