Scuba diving was created by Jacques Cousteau who invented the S elf C ontained U nderwater B reathing A pparatus, which includes the air tanks, regulators, hoses and mask needed for effortless breathing under the water. Scuba diving is a great sport for seeing the undersea nature. When you have your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), TDI (Technical Diving International), or NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) scuba diving certification, you can dive almost anywhere in the world.

Thailand Scuba Diving - Dive Pattaya Mermaid's Dive Center Pattaya, Thailand Dive Sites and Dive Courses Mermaid's Dive Center has two dedicated dive boats going out EVERY day!
The main scuba diving areas around Pattaya are located in what we call the "Far Islands". These are the second ring of islands about 20-30 kilometers from Pattaya. The islands are controlled by The Navy, and no permanent structures are built there (boat traffic is also a minimum). These islands include Koh Rin, Koh Man Wichai, Koh Keung Badaan, Koh Hu Chang and Koh Phi. Altogether we have up to 20 different dive sites with visibility ranging from 5 - 15 meters. There are many different types of soft and hard corals, and large schools of Jacks, Barracuda and Tuna. Blue Spotted Stingrays, Porcupine Pufferfish and Moray Eels can be seen on virtually every dive. The newly sunk HTMS Khram shipwreck is located just south of Koh Phi and has fast become a favorite among local divers. An incredible amount of marine life has already been attracted to this wreck in a very short period of time. The Samae San/Sattahip area has similar diving conditions, with the added attraction of two large intact shipwrecks. The Petchburi Bremen is an old freighter sunk in 21 meters of water in the Khram Channel (Sattahip). It's home to many Grouper and Barracuda. The Hardeep is a cargo ship sunk in 28 meters during the World War II era. This ship is completely intact, and can be navigated from bow to stern entirely inside!!

Schwerzmann M, Seiler C
Recreational scuba diving, patent foramen ovale and their associated risks.
Peer reviewed article; Review article Scuba diving has become a popular leisure time activity with distinct risks to health owing to its physical characteristics. Knowledge of the behaviour of any mixture of breathable gases under increased ambient pressure is crucial for safe diving and gives clues as to the pathopyhsiology of compression or decompression related disorders. Immersion in cold water augments cardiac pre- and afterload due to an increase of intrathoracic blood volume and peripheral vasoconstriction. In very rare cases, the vasoconstrictor response can lead to pulmonary oedema.
Immersion of the face in cold water is associated with bradycardia mediated by increased vagal tone. In icy water, the bradycardia can be so pronounced, that syncope results.
In recreational divers, neurological decompression events comprise 80% of reported cases of major decompression problems, most of the time due to pathological effects of intravascular bubbles. In divers with a history of major neurological decompression symptoms without evident cause, transoesophageal echocardiography must be performed to exclude a patent foramen ovale. If a cardiac right-to-left shunt is present, we advise divers with a history of severe decompression illness to stop diving. If they refuse to do so, it is crucial that they change their diving habits, minimising the amount of nitrogen load on the tissue.

SCUBA is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. In short, scuba diving is an underwater activity practiced with the help of equipment worn by the diver which provides a supply of breathing gas allowing the diver to remain underwater for long periods. There are two types of SCUBA equipment: the Aqua-Lung - a system consisting of a tank or diving cylinder containing a high pressure breathing gas and diving regulator that supplies the diver with that gas at a pressure suitable for the depth of the diver. This type of SCUBA equipment is known as 'open circuit' because exhaled gas is lost to the environment. the Rebreather - supplies the diver with breathing gas from a diving cylinder and a diving regulator but consists of other mechanisms to recycle safely the exhaled gas to economise on gas consumption. This type of SCUBA equipment is known as 'closed circuit'.

Alternatives to diving with SCUBA equipment are:
free-diving - swimming underwater on a single breath of air.
