Medical Problems of Recreational Scuba Diving
What is recreational scuba diving? Recreational scuba diving is defined as pleasure diving to a depth of up to 130 feet without decompression stops. Recreational scuba diving has become very popular in the past 20 years. There are almost 9 million certified divers in the United States alone. Several scuba certifying agencies offer training for divers, from beginners to experts. Three of these agencies are the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) and Scuba Schools International (SSI). Basic classes involve classroom instruction and training in a pool and in open water settings. The most popular courses last from 4 to 8 weeks. What are the common medical problems of scuba diving?

R ecreational scuba diving, which is defined as pleasure diving without mandatory decompression to a maximum depth of 130 ft, has become a popular activity in the past 20 years. In the United States alone, there are almost 9 million certified divers. Although divers are concentrated along coastal regions, many others dive in inland lakes, streams, quarries and reservoirs, or fly to distant dive sites. Physicians practicing almost anywhere in the United States may see a patient with a dive-related injury or complaint. Pulmonary barotrauma is the most severe form of barotrauma and occurs during ascent. In general, severe injury and death are uncommon in recreational diving accidents.

ZAMBONI Driver Dream Job: Scuba Diver Frei trained for his recreational scuba instructing certification 12 years ago in British Columbia, where the water is neither as clear as the Caribbean, nor as warm, but he swears it to be one of the most beautiful places to dive in the world. Dive In It's night. You're in the middle of the ocean, exploring sea walls consisting entirely of vibrant life, and you see something as large as yourself, but not human, coming towards you. It's a sea lion. The enormous animal touches you, and starts playing. Your fear subsides. This is the recollection of scuba diving instructor Pat Frei from his coldest dive ever - 35 degrees - in British Columbia. When he came to the surface, it was snowing. "There is nothing like floating on the surface of the ocean, warm, happy, and shining your light up into the sky as the snow falls around you like tiny stars," he said. That night, bioluminescence spread out all around him (certain organisms in the water emit light when disturbed, such as when a ship passes). "You find yourself surrounded by stars, and all around you in the water the plankton brightly mark your passing," he said. "It is perhaps the most beautiful experience I have ever had."

Open-Circuit Scuba

Courtesy of Corel Photography Scuba stands for self-contained, underwater breathing apparatus. It means that scuba divers carry all of the breathing medium they need with them for the duration they are underwater. Open-Circuit scuba may be most easily understood by contrasting it to other types of scuba diving. In Closed-Circuit scuba there is a total recirculation of the gas supplied to the diver. In Semi-Closed Circuit scuba, there is partial recirculation of gas supplied to the diver. In contrast, the gas supplied during Open-Circuit scuba is not recycled at all. When a diver breathes out, the exhalation goes out to the surrounding water instead of being recirculated somehow. In Closed-Circuit scuba, oxygen and mixed gas are used as the gas supply for the diver. In Semi-Closed Circuit scuba, mixed gas is used as the gas supply. In contrast, Open-Circuit scuba uses mixed gas and air as the gas supplies, with air being the main gas supply for Open-Circuit scuba divers. Open-Circuit scuba is the most widely practiced type of diving. Recreational divers definitely tend towards this type of scuba, but scientific, military and public safety divers use it regularly too. The recreational diving community likely tends towards Open-Circuit scuba because it is the simplest, most portable and most inexpensive type of scuba diving. Training for people to become Open-Circuit scuba divers is available around the world.

Site Introduction
Recommendation on Scubapro Manifold amended
11 July 2003, please see "here" for details.

This site was written to provide qualified scuba divers and trainees alike with "easy to understand, practical guidance" on essential features to look for (or not) when they consider buying equipment. It covers everything from the bottom up for normal and more advanced recreational diving. This site is completely independent and not affiliated to any commercial enterprise. All too often we get conflicting guidance on what to buy and it can be difficult to know what is good, bad or ugly, particularly when we are new to the sport. As qualified divers we may be impressed by the latest fashion and seek features which may prove to be more trouble than they are worth. The amount of money that can be wasted can be frightening. The chart on the right demonstrates this only too adeptly and it is a real life example!
