Welcome to Aquanaut , the Internet's first and largest online magazine dedicated to the recreational and technical SCUBA diving community. Aquanaut has been online since February 1993. Prior to use of WWW technology, Aquanaut used a Gopher server for several months to bring you a simple text and graphic magazine. We added WWW in late 1993 and dropped the Gopher service in mid-1994. In July 1996, we created AquaCrawler : our own Web Crawler tool. AquaCrawler maintains a database of links to thousands of other Web sites containg SCUBA information. Search AquaCrawler using the search link below. Information and images are regularly added to Aquanaut , and we welcome contributions. We look forward to hearing from you.

    SECTION B
    Recreational Scuba Diving: An Overview
WHAT DOES 'SCUBA' STAND FOR? Scuba is an acronym for 'self-contained underwater breathing apparatus'. There are several ways one can go under water (breath-hold, helmet diving, submarine, etc.). "Diving with scuba" signifies using apparatus that is completely carried by the diver and not connected to the surface, hence self-contained. HOW POPULAR IS SCUBA DIVING? An estimated 2.5-3.5 million Americans participate in recreational scuba diving. Another 500 thousand become certified each year in the United States. In the early days of scuba diving (roughly 1950-1970), participants were predominately young men. Today the sport is enjoyed by people in all age groups and both sexes. And why not? Just about any teenager or adult who enjoys the water and can swim, and who does not have heart or lung impairment, can learn to scuba dive. It does not take great physical strength or unusual exercise tolerance. All it takes is the desire, plus some basic classroom and in-water training. Scuba originally began with military and commercial applications, where it is still employed. However, by far its widest use, in terms of number of participants, is recreational. Recreational scuba today is like other any other sport that requires specialized equipment and training, such as snow skiing, sailing, mountain climbing and horseback riding. This section will provide an overview of recreational scuba diving, and explain how it differs from other forms of diving with scuba equipment.

    PREFACE
Unless you score 80% or better on the short scuba quiz , you can probably benefit from reading this book. Knowledge of basic underwater physiology is critical to diving safety, of course, and the subject is taught in every certification class. For example, the first rule of diving don't hold your breath is based on Boyle's law of gas pressures, which predicts that a scuba diver's lungs will expand if breath is held on ascent. The consequence can be a serious and even fatal over-expansion injury.
Although all certification manuals and general scuba books review underwater physiology, the coverage is necessarily limited. Typically, one chapter is devoted to the subject. Important effects of altered physiology, such as decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, are covered only briefly.
As a recreational diver and pulmonary physician, I believe there is need for a book that more fully explains this material. Not a textbook for the doctor, engineer or scientist, but a book any recreational diver can understand. A book that answers questions frequently pondered by the recreational diver. After searching and finding no such book, I decided to write one! Scuba Diving Explained is intended for all sport divers because the material is important for all of us, from beginner to people with years of experience.
