Bus USB vs. SCSI Can I clean the board's contacts with a steel sponge? SCSI is slower than UDMA/66? What does "PCI 2.1" mean? ... 64-bit video boards in 32-bit PCI slots? which is the fastest connection, USB or SCSI? What are USB basic characteristics? SCSI is much more faster than USB. A Fast40 SCSI transfer rate is of 40 MB/s, while the USB maximum transfer rate is 12 Mbps (about 1.5 MB/s). There are SCSI devices that can transfer up to 80 MB/s. The USB bus was projected to connect slow external peripherals to the PC, like the keyboard, the mouse, the printer, etc. SCSI connects fast devices, specially hard disks. The data transfer in SCSI is made in parallel way, while in USB the data transfer is made in serial way. Conclusion: SCSI and USB are not competitors. I saw a guy cleaning a board's contacts with a steel sponge instead of using a white eraser. Is this right?

a.fachat@gmx.net Homepage
This is the description of several SCSI controllers for the Commodore C64 computer. Some of them may be used with a VIC20 or C128 as well. All of the controllers are based on one hardware interface that is built into different setups.
Description
After going a bit into the SCSI standard first I present the generic interface. (You can download a slightly older page and all schematics in one archive in scsi64-1.tar.gz . The link to the SCSI standard below is missing). The driver code is made in a modular way. It consist of the hardware driver and the partition handler. Both are separated by a well-formed programming interface, as well as the partition handler presents a nice interface to the filesystem code. This architecture is presented in the second part. The different hardware projects using the generic SCSI interface are described in the third chapter. Those include a SCSI interface directly for the C64, as well as disk-drive-like small computers that can be used via the C64s serial IEC bus.
Before you go on, you should know that all this stuff comes with

JULY 1999
TAKING A BITE OUT OF APPLE
Customer focus is the new chant of modern business. Andy Benedek asks so why has Apple ignored its users?
LAST MONTH'S REVIEW
FONTLAB 3 FOR MAC

Correct me if I am wrong, but to my mind, the object of marketing is to find out what customers want and then to supply a product or a service which fulfils their requirements. If I am not wrong, can anybody tell me why Apple is now supplying computers without a floppy disk drive, without a serial port and without a SCSI port?
I know floppies are unreliable, but I often find myself in the situation of having to get a PC file, such as an Excel or Word file, on to a Mac, or vice versa, and find that the quickest and simplest way is to stick it on a floppy. Moreover, such situations often occur when hard up against an approaching deadline. At such times, for me, the floppy is a Godsend.
Apple, in its self-professed infinite wisdom, says that such file transfers are obsolete and the modern method is to e-mail it. Well, this might be just fine and dandy when local telephone calls are free, as they are in the US, but here, the telephone bill mounts up. Secondly, not all my computers are connected to the Internet or networked. This is a conscious decision on my part because I do not wish to infect all my computers with a virus should I inadvertently download one. FLOPPY To omit a floppy drive as standard is one thing, but to deny customers the option of having one installed if they so wish, can be taken as a measure of Apple's arrogance. At the time of the G3 computer's launch, neither an internal nor an external floppy was an option. External ones have since become available, but they were unreliable at the outset.

    Hardware wanted
Why do we want your old hardware?
The following list outlines hardware that the OpenBSD project could use. Some of this is being requested so that developers can improve or add driver support for devices which are rare; other requests are for hardware that will improve our development environment. In either case, we think we are being reasonable at asking for these devices. If you do not own these devices, but want to help us, we recommend you search on eBay for the devices. If you do the bidding and then get the device shipped to us, it really helps us. It's much better if our developers do not need to spend the time going through the bidding process, since any time saved can be spent on improving OpenBSD instead. As a reasonably large quantity of OpenBSD developers and users are in northern Europe we have setup a specific want list for that area. If you are in that region, go here first to check what developers close to you are in need of or want to work on support for.

The expansion boards were all Nas-bus compatible, although the bus had now been renamed as the 80-BUS. The frames offered would only really accept the Gemini cards, as they were intended for the 8in x 8in format only rather than the 8in x 11in NASCOM computers. However, a NASCOM-2 would work as the CPU card even though it stuck out of the frame by 3in! The NASCOM-1 was of no use really as it needed special arrangements to fit it to the frame (but see the pictures of my machine to see how it was done!). The frames and motherboards were sold separately, so the motherboards were suitable for NASCOM systems if used without the frames. (Of course, many NASCOM systems DID fit into Gemini frames - the frame was never the same again though. You can work wonders with a bit of aluminium and a hacksaw!) Many of the Gemini expansion boards were unsuitable to the NASCOM-1 due to insufficient I/O decoding on the main board. Also the lower clock speed of this machine meant that it couldn't really be used with disk systems. However, with a bit of hardware modification and a little luck in running the NASCOM-1 at 4MHz, both these problems were solvable. Several of the cards are coded Gnnn on the actual card, whereas they are advertised as GMnnn. This may be irrelevent, but I thought I'd better mention it.

    • QUESTION: When I try booting off my System 7.5 Disk Tools diskette, it tells me that this disk will not work with this Macintosh. What do I do to make this work?
    • ANSWER: You need to build a "bootable Floppy" diskette. To do this copy the System Folder from the System 7.5 Disk Tools diskette to your desktop. Eject the Disk Tools diskette and insert a new high density diskette (name this diskette ¥T601 Startup¥). Copy the System Folder from the desktop (the one you just copied from the System 7.5 Disk Tools diskette) to the T601 Startup diskette. Copy the Turbo 601 System Enabler (which you will find located on your startup hard drive in the System Folder) to the root level of the System Folder on the T601 Startup diskette. You will now be able to use this T601 Startup diskette as a bootable floppy in Turbo 601 mode.
