Workgroup scanners need support, too. The Adrenaline 450 is a Fast SCSI controller that offers 10 Mbps throughput. It supports scanning applications that use TWAIN, ISIS, and ImageControls, and unlike conventional SCSI boards, it offers the convenience of a single installation of the board and scanner driver. And like all Adrenaline products, it's certified and supported for document scanning.

Hardware FAQ
This FAQ is based on information gathered from the relevent comp.sys.amiga.* and demon.tech.amiga newsgroups, FTP and WWW sites and my own personal experience. Others are reworks of questions that have come up ICPUG SE meetings and while I've been giving technical support. Some questions have links mainly to files on the Aminet or pages on other sites. In the cases of Aminet links, most files will be in the hard/hack directory. The questions have be sorted under headings for easier access: If you have any information to add or correct please e-mail it to me webmaster@basil.u-net.com

Q. How do I add a second internal floppy drive to my A2000? A. You will need to physically mount the drive in its bay. Then connect the Power and Data cables. Then you must then close J301. Q. Can the A4000[T] support 8 Meg of CHIP RAM? A. There is a jumper (J213) on the mother board which sets the SIMM type for CHIP RAM. This can be set to 8 Meg, but the Alice, and the rest of the AGA chip set, does not yet support 8 Meg of CHIP RAM. Q. Are the Zorro II/III slots parallel? How are they powered up?

The maximum data transfer rate for both SCSI-1 and -2 is 5 MBps (megabytes per second). There are fast, wide, and fast and wide SCSI -2 implementations. "Fast" is a doubling of SCSI's data transfer rate by bursting data to higher speeds (without changing the bandwidth). Wide is doubling SCSI's bus from 8-bit to 16-bit or 32-bit. The fast SCSI-2 doubles SCSI's data transfer rate bursting data at 10 Mbps (without changes in bandwidth). SCSI "Ultra" (or "Fast-20") specification is a subset of SCSI-3, which was developed to provide 40 Mbps through a 16 bit bus. (With a maximum 20 megatransfers during an I/O operation, the larger the block (bytes), the faster the transfer.) SCSI-3 supports all previous specifications and is downward compatible with SCSI-1 and -2 devices, operating systems and software. It also expands support to 15 daisy-chained devices and supports implementation of a serial fiber-optic cable interface for 1 Gbps data transfers.

Description of the QCDSP Architecture and Technology
INTRODUCTION Given the enormous computational demands of quantum field theory and the easily parallelized nature of this problem, it is natural to design and build massively parallel machines, whose design is optimized for this class of calculation. Beginning in the March 1993, a collaboration of physicists and engineers, centered at Columbia, began the design of a digital signal processor (DSP) based machine with this objective. Here we describe the architecture and implementation of what has grown into a series of computers ranging from 64-node, 3 Gflops machines to a 8,192-node, 400 Gflops machine at Columbia and a 12,288-node, 600 Gflops machine now begin constructed at the RIKEN Brookhaven Research Center at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The processors in each of these machines are interconnected as a four-dimensional mesh with nearest neighbor connections. For example, the Columbia machine is a 16x16x8x4 mesh. Each processor or node is made up of a Texas Instruments DSP, 0.5Mwords of error-corrected memory and a gate array providing memory management and inter-node communication. The Columbia machine cost approximately $1.8M to construct over the past two years (it would cost about $1.2M at present component prices) implying a cost performance advantage of more than ten-fold over present commercial machines.

Detailed Description of PC Hardware Components for Online Searching:
The Main Board
The main board of your PC is the basic platform to connect all other components. It shoud have a 486 or 586 CPU and support energy saving standards. Modern main boards offer the following bus concepts (slots to connect the extension boards to the main board):
  • AT bus EISA bus VESA local bus PCI bus
AT and PCI bus are most widely used.
The RAM Modules
On the main board of your PC 4, 8, 16, 32 or even 64 MBytes of RAM Modules can be implemented. For use with Microsoft Windows, Windows 95 or IBM OS/2, OS/2 WARP a minimum of 16 MBytes is required.
The CD-Rom Drive
Modern Personal Computers have a CD-Rom drive installed. It is used to install software such as STN Express.
The Hard Disk
The operating system, the communication programs and other tools are stored on a hard disk. For the best performance of your PC, the hard disk should be able to store 300-500 MBytes of programs and data. Modern hard disks have a access time of less than 12 milli seconds and a data throughput of more than 1 MByte per second. There are different bus concepts for hard disk connection available:
  • IDE bus (requires no extra adaptor with modern 586 main boards) Enhanced IDE bus (requires no extra adaptor with modern 586 main boards) SCSI bus (most flexible, requires SCSI adaptor)

2.3. Supported Hardware
FreeBSD currently runs on a wide variety of ISA, VLB, EISA, and PCI bus based PCs, ranging from the 386SX to Pentium class machines (though the 386SX is not recommended). Support for generic IDE or ESDI drive configurations, various SCSI controllers, and network and serial cards is also provided. FreeBSD also supports IBM's microchannel (MCA) bus. In order to run FreeBSD, a recommended minimum of eight megabytes of RAM is suggested. Sixteen megabytes is the preferred amount of RAM as you may have some trouble with anything less than sixteen depending on your hardware. What follows is a list of hardware currently known to work with FreeBSD. There may be other hardware that works as well, but we have simply not received any confirmation of it.
