dances now available on CD ROM (Windows only, sorry). The selection is based on dances popular in the Vancouver area and has been updated to RSCDS book 43. They are presented in two versions: the first shows one or two repetitions of the dance with music; the second has pauses between formations with a spoken description; both versions have captions. Any part of the action can be stopped and replayed. There is also a selection of formations alone.
There is no attempt to illustrate steps or technique, only patterns and formations.
I am a member of Gleneagles SCDC in North Vancouver, BC, and have been working to develop these animations since shortly after starting to learn SCD a few years ago, as a logical improvement on printed dance directions in the computer age.
Sample animations may be downloaded. Choose either or both of: Demo 1 with sound, 2.1 Mb Price of CD, including postage: Canada $35, US $25. UK or overseas, £20 or equivalent. Click on Info link below for more details.

What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom dancing of Scotland. Unlike the Highland or National dances, which usually feature solo participants, Scottish Country Dances are social dances, involving couples in groups. From the lively jigs and reels, to the graceful strathspey dances, Scottish Country Dance is composed of formations which are arranged in a different sequence for each dance. Once the basic formations are mastered, dancers are easily able to participate in most dances found on Scottish Country Dance programs. Scottish Country Dance is still a living art form. While some dances performed are the old dances of the past, such as Montgomerie's Rant (which dates from 1747), there are still new dances being created today, like Graduation Day , written by our own Troy McDougal. Over 200 years old, Scottish Country Dancing found its roots in the Country Dances of England and the dances of the French court, but developed its own distinctive Scottish characteristics. The dances were often taught by itinerant teachers, then passed down from generation to generation. Truly the dance of the people, Scottish Country Dance was equally at home in the Laird's castle and the crofter's cottage. While Country Dance began to lose its popularity throughout Europe in the 19th century, the traditional dances still had a firm place on Scottish dance programs up to the outbreak of the First World War. But in the years immediately following the War, popular dances from the States threatened to completely replace Scottish Country Dancing. The Scottish Country Dance Society was formed in Glasgow in 1923, with the aim to practice and preserve Scottish Country Dancing.

Scottish country dancing has been popular in Scotland for centuries, and is danced in Victoria in many country centres, and in several Melbourne suburbs. It is a jolly, lively, social type of dancing, suitable for men and women of all ages. The dancing is done in groups of 6 or 8, and is very different from Highland Dancing, which is an individual dance. It is not necessary to be adept to enjoy this type of dancing, but the better you can dance, the more you will enjoy it. You should have the ability to move the feet rhythmically, and be able to follow formations. There are classes in Melbourne every night of the week, at various locations. The cost is usually $2 to $3 per night. It would be an advantage to have a pair of light-weight dance shoes - and that is all that you will need to begin. It is not necessary to come with a partner. The benefits are enjoyable physical exercise, mental stimulation, and the companionship of a friendly group of people

Scottish Country Dancing FAQs:
What is it?
It is the Ballroom dancing of Scotland. If you can imagine something similar to square dancing, in the formal style of a French Minuet, to Scottish Jig, Reel and Strathspey music - you've almost got it!
Do I need to be Scottish?
Not at all. Although the dance style originated in the courtly dances of Scotland in the 1700's, it is now danced (and enjoyed!) all over the world.
Do I need a partner?
No! As this is Social dancing, it is customary to change partners for every dance.
What about the swords?
That is Highland dancing. Country dancing is danced in sets, usually of four couples. Each dance contains several formations, and often tells a story.
Ok, I'm interested. How much?

June 12, Portland SCD Dance Party (see Calendar of Events The Vancouver USA Scottish Country Dancers is a social dance group, practicing and performing the traditional country dances of Scotland. Our classes are offered through the Vancouver Parks and Recreation department. It is not necessary to be Scottish, or even to bring a partner. Our dancing is open to all, and new dancers are always welcome. New classes start every new term as advertised in the Parks and Recreation catalog. Scottish Country Dancing is not the competitive "up on the toes" Highland Dancing often seen in the movies and at the Highland Games. Scottish Country Dancing is one of the grandparents of Square Dancing, Contra Dancing, and Clogging, and is not as physically strenuous as Highland Dancing. Scottish Country Dancing primarily consists of Reels, Jigs, and Strathspeys, with some Quadrilles, Waltzes, Circle Dances, and Highland Steps. All steps and dances are taught from the beginning of the term so don't be afraid to come join us. We are often involved in public demonstrations and are invited to other community activities. Our primary interest in dancing is to have fun!

What is Scottish Country Dancing?
Contributed by Anselm Lingnau
Scottish Country Dancing is a modern form of the 'country dancing' popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed sex (most of the time) a 'set' dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the 'first couple' in the set with movements for all the dancers, although there is considerable variation there are over 7000 different dances catalogued, of which maybe 1000 or so are of lasting and non-local importance. Many of these dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish Country Dancing.
Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on 'steps' than in, say, Ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary).

Did You Know?

Scottish Country Dance The other popular dance activity amongst Ulster-Scots is Scottish Country dancing, which differs distinctly from Highland dance. Young and old Ulster-Scots take part in these dances which are fun, lively, and totally inclusive – you don’t have to have a partner to dance! Scottish Country Dancing has been promoted and organised for longer than the Highland dance and further details on forthcoming events and local classes follow this brief introduction to the organisation. The Scottish Country Dance Society was formed in Glasgow on November 26, 1923 and its stated aim was to practise and preserve country dances ‘as danced in Scotland’. King George VI conferred the title ‘Royal’ upon the society in 1951 and it then became the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). Northern Ireland’s first branch of the RSCDS was founded in Belfast in the mid-1940s and since then has gone from strength to strength. The society tirelessly researches and gathers information on country dances and publishes these to their members. Many dances date back to records from the 1600s, but new dances are continuing to be created. Today as in the past the social character of country dancing is emphasised. It is a form of dancing that enables the dancer to meet with and dance with many other dancers during the course of an evening. You do not require a partner to join a class. The country dance is usually danced in a longwise set with four couples facing each other in a line. Each couple progresses from the top of the set to the bottom, each getting a turn in first place. Some dances are done in square sets and some by two people progressing around the room. There are some basic formations such as circles, wheels and reels, which are a part of most dances and do not take long to master. The steps that are used are basically ones to get you from one place to another (a travelling step) which is a bit like skipping and a setting step which is carried out when another person is being acknowledged.

Scottish Country Dance
Scottish country dance is the ballroom dance of eighteenth and nineteenth century Scotland. Along with English contra dancing, Scottish country dance is a predecessor of the dance form we now know as square dancing. It survives today both as informal ceilidh (party) dancing and as a dance form codified by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Several years ago I started taking Scottish country dance classes for recreation and exercise. I find it immensely enjoyable. I have also, at times, found the urge to write new dances irresistible. And I met my wife, Jodi, at SCD class. These pages include new dances that I and Jodi have written, as well as information on the Royal Scottish Country Dance society and links to other SCD-related sites on the Web. NOTE: Not all my dances are listed or posted here as yet. I wanted to get these pages back up here, since their old location (on Primenet) has disappeared as a result of Mindspring/Earthlink swallowing Primenet. I plan to post additional dances as time allows.

Scottish Country Dance
