In the 1920 s Miss Jean Milligan formed the Royal scottish country dance Society to restore and revitalize Scottish country dancing.
http://home.earthlink.net/~johnfschultz/memscd/
Scottish country dancing is the national social dance of Scotland. It evolved from court dances, Highland steps, and English country dancing of the 17th and 18th Centuries, all done to distinctively Scottish music. It fell out of fashion by the early 1900's. In the 1920's Miss Jean Milligan formed the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society to restore and revitalize Scottish country dancing. Today there are Scottish country dancing groups and classes around the world. It is a pastime in which almost everyone can participate. More information on Scottish Country Dancing all over the world can be found at The Strathspey Server . This includes information on other Scottish Country Dancing periodicals, on-line event directories, the Strathsepy mailing list and links to Scottish Country Dance groups. The Inter-City Scot is a newsletter for Scottish Country Dancing events in North America. There is a general class for all levels on the second and fourth Friday eveings of the month. The classes start at 7:30 PM at Idlewild Presbyterian Church. There is also a second group in the Memphis area that is separate from the Memphis Scottish Country Dancers with a class just for beginners that meets on the first and third Friday evenings of the month at 7:30 PM at Evergreen Presbyterian Church. For more information call Pam Cranford at (901) 324-2532.

Yes, Scottish culture is alive and well south of the Channel,
at least as far as the music and dance are concerned.
Clubs are flourishing and multiplying around the country.
And not only ex-pats.
The French have lost the tradition of country dancing ,
but when they discover what others do all around the world,
they take up the pas de basque with enthusiasm. You may be interested in seeing

planned for 2003-04 in France. Information will be added as I receive news from the various groups. A short selection of my own original country dances may be viewed on the web. Try them. You may find them interesting, you will certainly find them challenging! They are taken from
The Rhone Valley dance books and Alpine Valley books of new country dances in the Scottish tradition which have printed instructions and diagrams, and are available from me by snail mail. Since it is not obvious from the contents of this page

Scottish Country Dance Events in Scotland Full listings of Scottish Country Dance Events being held in Scotland can be seen at the new SCD Events in Scotland Website. The completeness of the list depends on organisers notifying their events to John. Mini Cribs Charles Upton updated his downloadable dance instruction programme on th May 2004 and you can now download version 14.5 from his site at http://www.minicrib.care4free.net/ Remember to delete the previous version before installing the new one. The best news is that they work with Word 2002 (otherwise known as XP) and are easier to access or update – one up to Microsoft. MiniCribs now have a version for Mac’s. Charles has amended the instructions on his MiniCrib page to take account of this. In addition, there is now a new version for Advanced Users available from the same site. Download it and try it - you install the unzipped file just the same as the old version. Once you install it full instructions are displayed for operation. You could find it easier to operate.

Scottish country dance
Scottish country dancing , as distinct from Old Tyme dancing, is very loosely governed throughout the world by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS). As the word "governed" implies, Scottish dancing (though a type of folk dancing ) is still continuing to evolve, and the majority of dances currently in favour have been written more recently than in most folk traditions. As a pursuit Scottish country dancing is no longer confined to Scotland, but active communities can be found throughout the world - in the rest of Britain, continental Europe, Canada and the US as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, with occasional groups in places as diverse as Russia, South Africa, Argentina, Hong Kong and so on. Scottish country dances are categorised as reels, jigs , hornpipes or strathspeys; generally consist of two partner couples (one man and one lady - frequently informally danced with two ladies instead, one of whom dances as the "man"), incorporating two or more couples in sets (usually restricted to six couples unless for demonstration purposes). The usual set shape is "longwise" - between three and five couples side by side with all the men in a line facing a similar line of ladies (each man being opposite their partner) with the top couple of the set being the left most man and his partner. Other set shapes include:
  • Triangular : three couples on the sides of an equilateral triangle with the top couple being on the base of the triangle

THE HONG KONG HIGHLANDERS REEL CLUB The Reel Club has been in existence for over fifty years, since 1947 in fact, although it only affiliated with the Hong Kong Highlanders in 1997. It was originally set up by the then minister of the Union Church with the intention of providing British servicemen with wholesome entertainment and keeping them away from less salubrious areas of Hong Kong. Fifty years later, it is still providing people with wholesome entertainment and the chance to meet friends and dance on a regular basis. Individual members may come and go, but the regular Monday night meetings keep right on going, though we're now in a new venue, the Hong Kong Cricket Club. The Reel Club is affiliated to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society , a globe-spanning organisation with branches and affiliated groups in more countries than you can imagine. You will never go on holiday again without packing your dancing shoes.
