John Chambers' Scottish Country Dance Music Collection
This directory and its subdirectories contain the abc source for a collection of Scottish Country Dance music . Files are named for the dance. So if you want a medley for General Stuart's Reel, fetch GeneralStuartsR.abc, feed it to your abc software, and you should get the tunes on your screen. Individual tunes are all in subdirectories named for a rhythm: reel, jig, strathspey, march, etc. This directory's Makefile made the medley pages from them and from the hdr/ *.hdr files that produce the dance title and other information at the top of the page. If you don't have ABC software, you might like to try a tool that I'm working on that returns the tunes in various formats: This will return the page you're looking at now, but the ABC files will be expanded to show all the tunes, and each tune will have a line of links that will return it in a number of different formats. You can find out all about the abc music software at the abc home page . Also, check out the

What is Scottish Country Dancing?
This is a note I wrote for inclusion in the soc.culture.scottish FAQ maintained by Craig Cockburn: Scottish Country Dancing is a modern form of the `country dancing' popular in England and Scotland in the 18th century. It involves groups of six to ten people (most of the time) of mixed sex (most of the time) a `set' dancing to the driving strains of reels, jigs and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordion, flute, piano, drums, etc. (no bagpipes, mostly!). The dance often combines solo figures for the `first couple' in the set with movements for all the dancers, although there is considerable variation there are over 7000 different dances catalogued, of which maybe 1000 or so are of lasting and non-local importance. Many of these dances derive from traditional sources such as old manuscripts and printed dance collections, but a lot have been devised in the fairly recent past, say the last fifty years or so. This fusion of the traditional and the modern as well as its ongoing evolution are part of the attraction of Scottish Country Dancing. Think of SCD as a cross between square or contra dance (although there is no caller) and ballet; there are about a dozen basic figures which will get you through quite a number of dances, although many dances have their own quirks and specialities which make them unique and fun to dance. There is also more emphasis on `steps' than in, say, Ceilidh dancing, but the basic technique can be learned at a week-end workshop or through a couple of months' worth of practice evenings once a week. Even though there are so many dances, you don't have to learn any of them by heart if you don't want to the programmes for balls and social evenings are usually published well before the event, so everybody can check their crib sheets. Also, at the event itself dances are often recapitulated or even sometimes walked through slowly before the music starts (although local custom may vary).

Scottish Country Dancing is a traditional dance of Scotland. Many of the old dances such a Petronella and White Cockade are still popular. Since then many new dances have been added. Scottish dancing is enjoyed by people of all ages and from many cultures. There is no need to have Scottish ancestry to enjoy this. There are groups in many non-Scottish countries around the world such as Japan France and Singapore There is an expression that "The music tells you what to do" We usually dance to music from bands of accordions, drums, and sometimes fiddles. Other times pianos or bagpipes get us moving. Jigs and reels are fast lively dances while elegant strathspeys and Scottish waltzes are slower. In an evening's dance, you dance with series of partners. It is not necessary to bring your own partner. We usually dance in lines with sets of of 4 couples, although some dances have a different formation. When the music starts, you bow or curtsey to your partner then go into a series of patterns which vary for each dance. In all but the most major balls, someone briefs the dances before the music starts to explain what to do. Often you may walk the dance during the briefing to further help you learn the dance. In the Toronto area, you can join

Come dance with us! Scottish country dances are exciting jigs and reels and elegant strathspeys, the historic social dances of Scotland. For centuries they were enjoyed both at court and in the countryside, and today they are danced in hundreds of RSCDS groups throughout the world. Sue's Scottish Country Dance Page
I started Scottish Country Dancing in the fall of 1994 and immediately fell in love with it. Then I began having dances pop into my head and eventually I wrote them down. These are the dances I have written. Each dance has been danced at least once by my local group, the Silk and Thistle class of the RSCDS - Chicago Branch. Were it not for the Silk and Thistle dancers, these dances would not exist. They patiently try my dances, critique them, help tweak them when necessary, and help select music and an appropriate name. Especial favorites of the group are indicated with an "*". I plan to add dances to this list as I write them. Feel free to copy them and dance them anywhere anytime. I only request that you keep my name associated with them. I have split my dance page into several pages to make the pages shorter. Click on the year to go to the appropriate page, e.g. 2000. Dances not yet tried are listed in a red font. Feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions, or comments, or visit my home page . Thank you, and I hope you enjoy dancing these dances.
