Standard Etiquette for Scottish Country Dancing
Madison Scottish Country Dancers
  • Arrive on time whenever possible.
  • An invitation to dance may be extended by either a man or a woman. It should be worded in a clear and friendly way. A friendly hand should be extended to the partner.
  • Always join a set at the bottom, but avoid walking through the set to get there or to another set. Also, don't pass a set in need of a couple, or leave a set once you have joined it. (Except under the direction of the MC, in order to allow more people to dancesuch as a fourth couple leaving to join two couples, making two 3-couple sets.) Stay in lines and places while sets are forming, as it is hard to count if everyone is moving about. The first couple in a set traditionally counts off the number of couples lined up.
  • Listen quietly during all instructions. If you have any questions, ask the instructor, not other dancers. The question may also be of interest to others. At the end of every dance, you should thank your partner and clear the floor.
  • Do not form new sets until the next dance is announce by the MC. This allows for a better exchange of partners and distribution of ability in sets, which is so important for a sociable evening. Also, it is more flexible and friendly NOT to line up partners for all of the dances ahead of time.

    25. About The Kansas City Scottish Country Dancers
Information on dance lessons and instruction, workshops, classes.
    http://www.kcscottishdancers.com
an affiliate of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society
The Kansas City Scottish Country Dancers is an organization whose members share an interest in Scottish Country dance and music.
Country dance usually involves a "set" - a group of four to eight people - dancing a series of formations to the driving strains of reels, jigs, and strathspeys played on the fiddle, accordian, piano and/or bagpipes.
So long as there's a good rousing tune or two, good company, and an excuse to dance, there will always be Scots handy with their feet. But you don't have to be a Scot to find your foot tapping to the irresistible rhythms or to be captivated by a style of dance that is above all happy, lively, and sociable.
Join us! You certainly won't be left sitting on the sidelines. Come dance with the Kansas City Scottish Country Dancers!

The high point of our year is a spring ball , where dancers of all skill levels as well as observers come together to enjoy friendship, dancing, live music and pageantry. Iowa State University students have formed an affiliated group, the Celtic Dance Society . This organization arranges classes on Monday nights as well as other activities for students. RSCDS-CI is a member of the Ames Community Arts Council.

The Scottish Country Dance Index lists, in alphabetical order, all the dances for which the music is available on CD, and the album on which it is to be found. Further information on the list gives the type of dance (Reel, Jig, Strathspey, Medley, Waltz), the number of repeats as played on this particular album, and the number of bars. Dancers can now not only trace their favourite dance to a particular album, but also, where more than one artiste has recorded it, select their CD according to either the style or the speed of the music they desire. The "pace" is calculated from the track time given on the CD sleeve, so includes chords. It is therefore only an approximate guide to the speed, but should be more than adequate for selecting the appropriate track to dance to. All CDs are available from the Music In Scotland Music Store Simply click on the Product IDs or artist of the CDs you would like to order.
