Projected Population of Scotland (2000 Based) Background
The Government Actuary, in consultation with, and at the request of, the Registrars General, prepares the population projections for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries. This note presents the main results of the latest, 2000 based, projection for Scotland, and outlines the fertility, mortality and migration assumptions used in its preparation. Summary of results
The results of this new projection, summarised in Table 1 , show the total population of Scotland falling slowly from 5.11 million in 2000 to 4.93 million by 2025, falling below 5 million in 2018. Longer term projections, for up to 40 years ahead, also produced by the Government Actuary's Department (GAD), show a slightly faster decline after 2025 to 4.59 million in 2040. Table 1 Projected population of Scotland (2000 based): 2000-2040 Longer term projections 2000 (base) All Ages Table 2 provides information on the projected components of change between 2000 and 2025. It is clear from this table that the most significant factor affecting future projected levels of population is the natural decrease, or more deaths than births. More detailed information on the fertility assumptions which led to the low numbers of births is given in the

    Community Woodlands
A community woodland is one controlled by the local community, through a Community Woodland Group ( CWG ). The woodland may be owned or leased by the group, or managed in a partnership between the group and another organisation. Community woodlands can deliver both ecological restoration and rural development and are thus key to the work of Reforesting Scotland. Reforesting Scotland has helped to create the conditions in which Community Woodland Groups can flourish, and has provided help, information and support for many individual CWG s. There continues to be a high level of demand from community groups throughout Scotland for the services that Reforesting Scotland provides through this project, and CWG s are fully aware that Reforesting Scotland is there to help them rather than to make a name for itself. Over 120 groups are now part of the Community Woodland Network. Key activities include:
    • Participatory Forest Appraisals An annual conference A telephone and e-mail advice service, information mailings, and an e-mail discussion forum

Wildlife News Search WWF-UK WWF-UK About WWF WWF Scotland Scottish News > News stories Saturday 12 June 2004 Government failure trashes Scotland's great barrier reef Wednesday 23 April 2003 WWF has exposed the UK government's failure to keep its promise to protect unique cold water corals, the Darwin Mounds, situated off Scotland's northern coastline, from being destroyed by deep-water fishing. WWF is still waiting for the government to act on an eighteen-month-old promise by Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for DEFRA, to save the corals. In the mean time, the Darwin Mounds, which are known to be thousands of years old, continue to be smashed by deep-water fishing nets from fishing trawlers.
"Up close, the Darwin Mounds are as beautiful and as rich in marine wildlife as the Great Barrier Reef," said Helen McLachlan, marine policy officer for WWF Scotland. "We are extremely frustrated that the government has promised time and time again to protect these amazing reefs but nothing has happened. Ministers north and south of the border need to take the marine environment more seriously."
Although the UK government would have to go through the European Commission to protect the Darwin Mounds, WWF has learned that the Commission is broadly supportive of the idea. In a response to a European Parliamentary Question about the Darwin Mounds (dated 14 February 2002) Mr Fischler, President of the European Commission, wrote, "the Commission is ready to consider any substantiated request from the UK government that could justify emergency measures..."
