    Government
Scotland is part of the constitutional monarchy of the United Kingdom, also called Great Britain. Although the British monarch is the head of state, the kingdom is actually governed by a cabinet of government officials called ministers. Scotland’s chief minister to the UK cabinet is called the secretary of state for Scotland. Scotland has representatives in the United Kingdom's Parliament. In 1999, as part of the UK's plan to make its regions more autonomous, Scotland formed its own Parliament and Executive branch. Many of the responsibilities undertaken by the Scottish Office (the Secretary of State for Scotland's office), are now the responsibility of the new government offices. There are thirty-two districts for local government. These districts, or unitary authorities, are supervised by elected councils who report to the central government. Management or Semi-Independence? The government of Scotland from 1707-1832 Dr Alex Murdoch,University of Edinburgh There has been an implicit distinction in the literature which has grown so in the last quarter century concerning Scottish politics from the Union to the Scottish Reform Act of 1832 which has been understood by most of those who have contributed to it, but has not always by many of those who have read it. There have now been a substantial number of published monographs and unpublished doctoral theses on the political management of Scotland during the eighteenth century. This work appears to me often to be considered as the same as work on the Scottish electoral system from 1707-1832 begun by William Ferguson and subject to comparatively fewer additions in recent years. While the first body of work implicitedly considers the nature of the constitutional relationship between England and Scotland as abstract entities after the parliamentary union of 1707, the second area of study is really concerned with identifying an unwritten Scottish constitution and demonstrating how it affected politics and the law after Scotland lost an independent political forum as well as its own legislature through the union. Only Ferguson really has undertaken this work in genuine depth, while others of us (I include myself) have contributed specific studies of particular political contexts

Tourist facilities are widely available. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport is required. Tourists are not obliged to obtain a visa for stays of up to six months in the United Kingdom or to enter Gibraltar. Those planning to stay in the United Kingdom for any purpose longer than six months must obtain a visa prior to entering. Those wishing to remain longer than one month in Gibraltar should regularize their stay with Gibraltar immigration authorities. In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child's travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian if not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry/departure. Further information on entry requirements may be obtained from the British Embassy at 3100 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008 ; tel: (202) 588-7800. Local government in Scotland
Before local government in Scotland was organised on the county system. In , the Conservative government of Edward Heath introduced a system of two-tier local government in Scotland, divided between large Regional Councils and smaller District Councils. The only exceptions to this were the three Island Councils, Western Isles Shetland and Orkney which had the combined powers of Regions and Districts. In the Conservative government of John Major decided to abolish this system and merge their powers into new Unitary Authorities, roughly equivalent to the old counties. The power invested in these authorities is administered by elected councillors. There are currently around 1,200 in total, each paid a part-time salary for the undertaking of their duties. Each authority elects a Provost to chair meetings of the authority's council and act as a figurehead for the area. The office of Provost is roughly equivalent to that of the English Mayor . The four main cities of Scotland
