CHURCH GOVERNMENT AND PRESBYTERIANISM
Government
Church of Scotland government is organised on the basis of courts, mainly along lines set between 1560 and 1690. Each of these courts has developed committees, which may include other members of the Church, and those at national level now employ full-time staff. At local level: the parish - the court is a kirk session . Kirk sessions oversee the local congregation and its parish, and consist of elders presided over by a minister. More information about our parishes is available here At district level: the court is a presbytery . Presbyteries consist of all the ministers in the district and an equal number of elders, along with members of the diaconate (a form of ordained ministry, usually working in a complementary role in a ministry team in both parish and industry sector contexts). A guide to Church of Scotland presbytery business and boundaries is available here At national level: the court is the highest court of the Kirk - the

Greetings and Welcome to the Argyllshire homepage! My name is Darren McCathern, I am the County Coordinator for Argyllshire Scotland. My birthplace is located in Amarillo Texas
My family history is very deeply rooted in Argyllshire. My 33rd Great Grandfather was King Achaius whom was King of Dalriada. This man was the Grandfather of Kenneth MacAlpin King of Scotland. In all, I am directly descended from 12 Ancient Kings of Dalriada whom were the descendants of Fergus The Great. Fergus and his five brothers came from Ireland to assist their Grandfather King Loarn whom was being oppressed by the Picts, and consequently vanquished the Picts from the land, which as a result afforded Fergus being elected the first absolute King of Scotland and the Milesian Race. To learn more information about the Kings of Scotland you may visit the Scotland Royalty Archives Please feel free to join the mailing lists provided for research in Argyllshire, and be sure to post your queries in our query system to help other researchers help you with your research in Argyllshire Scotland. Local Government in Scotland
In 1995, local government in Scotland will be reorganised into 29 unitary authorities, replacing the two tier system which has existed since the last reorganisation of local goverment in 1974, following the Local Government (Scotland) Act of 1973. Between 1974 and 1995 there were 9 Regional Authorities (divided into 53 District Councils) and 3 unitary Island Councils. The 3 island authorities will be retained after 1995. Prior to 1974, Scotland was divided into counties and the larger cities were governed by City Corporations. The old counties are still used as the basis of Land Registration in Scotland. In each case, these local government institutions are run by a body of councillors, who are elected every four years. Listed below are some of the local government sub-divisions which have been used:
