Young people are more likely to drink too much
The "laddish culture" is thriving in Scotland with alcohol still taking its toll on the nation's health, according to the country's chief medical officer. Dr Mac Armstrong conceded that the Scottish Executive's health advertisements were not succeeding as new figures revealed that alcohol-related deaths were on the increase. The clinical outcome indicators report showed that, in 1990, one in every 100 deaths in Scotland was alcohol-related. By 1999, that number had risen to one in 40. The report also stated that 16 to 25-year-olds of both sexes were the most likely to exceed the recommended weekly alcohol limits. Mac Armstrong: Message not getting through
Dr Armstrong said: "Alcohol-related problems currently cost Scotland £1bn a year and cost the health service in Scotland around £96m. "The laddish culture is alive and well and living in Scotland and it is not doing our young people any good at all.

Scotland's sole candidate to become European City of Culture 2008 has failed to make a final shortlist.
Inverness and the Highlands were on a list of a dozen locations which has now been whittled down to just six by a 12-strong committee. Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle/Gateshead and Oxford were unveiled as the contenders by the UK Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell. The UK's last City of Culture - Glasgow in 1990 - enjoyed a significant increase in tourism as a result of winning the title. We asked you what the exclusion of Scotland's candidate said about the country's culture? Are our art galleries, theatres and museums keeping up with the times and other parts of the UK? Does our "culture" send out the correct messages to potential visitors? Or are we just not very good at showcasing what Scotland has to offer? This is what you said. I think 'culture' is ridiculously overrated. I never go to the theatre or art galleries because I believe education is about learning facts. As long as people are well educated about history, politics and science then it does not matter whether they enjoy Shakespeare or Stallone (or neither) in their spare time.

Most Scottish people are descended from peoples who came to Scotland thousands of years ago. These groups included the Celts, Scandinavians and a Celtic tribe from Ireland called the Scots. These peoples intermarried and developed into the family groups called clans. Each clan wore clothing with distinctive patterns of plaid called kilts. http://www.rampantscotland.com/celts.htm Links to Scottish Celtic culture, mythology and history http://www.rampantscotland.com/clans.htm Information on Clans, Clan Societies, Families, Tartans , Kilts and Highland dress generally. Celebrating Scotland’s Culture
Scotland’s culture, from the languages we speak to the arts we perform and applaud, the sports we play and the riches we find in our libraries and museums, makes Scotland unique. Our cultural and sporting activity enriches our lives and our communities in many ways. Labour believes that promoting the best of Scotland’s culture, arts and sport will improve the quality of life for everyone. Our vision of a vibrant, modern society means that our cultural life must be for the many, not the few. It must be inclusive and accessible, embracing a diverse range of expression across our communities, involving film, visual and performing arts, our galleries, libraries and museums. We will consult with a view to re-organising existing agencies and establishing a new single cultural agency for Scotland. We will improve opportunity and access through music tuition support for schools and additional support to overcome the practical difficulties of access such as transport. We will devolve funding decisions to local structures and maximise the role of our arts and cultural higher education institutions as centres of excellence. We will nurture and promote Scotland's young talent by increasing productive links between public support and commercial enterprise. And we will strengthen the link between Scotland’s arts and culture and the promotion of tourism and economic growth.

Edinburgh and Glasgow have well deserved reputations for artistic and cultural activities. For 3 weeks every summer, Edinburgh is home of one of the world's largest international arts festivals. And Edinburgh's and Glasgow's wealth of museums and galleries are among the best in Europe. The Burrell Collection in Glasgow, now one of Scotland's top tourist attractions, houses a priceless collection of ancient and medieval art. The Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University houses an extensive collection of work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a native of the city and a leader of the Art Nouveau movement. Cinemas and theatres, jazz and folk music events, local festivals and pop concerts all add to the variety and quality of leisure activities to be found in Scotland. Music and the arts are also very alive in other Scottish towns and cities, with Stirling, Perth, Inverness and Pitlochry all contributing to the tapestry of Scottish culture. Scotland is renowned for its splendid castles and stately homes, among which Edinburgh Castle is possibly the most famous, and is host to the annual Military Tattoo.

Welcome to Culture Hebrides
Culture Hebrides is the first site dedicated to the culture of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and one of the ten fascinating VisitHebrides.com websites! The Hebrides is the home of an unique spiritual, civilised culture, the true heartland of the Gaels and the Gaelic language. Hebridean communities are close knit, friendly and safe: more in tune with nature and relaxed and contented with the rhythm of life. People will go out of their way to help you and have the time to be genuinely interested in what you have to say. A lively and vibrant culture, the Hebridean Celtic Festival, Ceòlas Music Summer School, the Harris Arts Festival and Barra Live are pioneering events that attract people to the Hebrides from all over the world. Ceòlas is an annual summer festival in South Uist with expert tuition in piping, fiddling, singing, dancing and the Gaelic language. Though focusing on Hebridean tradition, Ceòlas also has a strong Cape Breton dimension. Gaelic culture taken to Cape Breton by emigrants from the Gaidhealtachd nearly 200 years ago survived there in relative isolation. Now Ceòlas provides a unique opportunity to bring it all 'back home'. Celebration of cultural links between music, song and dance, and across the north Atlantic, is the School's hallmark. Pure traditional music also lives on, with the local mods a focal point for junior and adult choirs, musicians, storytellers, poets and actors. Fans of the pipes can hear the Lewis Pipe Band as they parade through Stornoway town centre every Saturday evening in summer.

Scotland Cultural Profile A comprehensive online guide to Scotland's arts and culture
A Visiting Arts project supported by the Scottish Executive and British Council Scotland
The Scotland Cultural Profile will be a comprehensive online directory of Scottish arts, culture and heritage, combining extensive introductory text with detailed listings grouped by sector. Created by Visiting Arts, in partnership with the Scottish Executive and British Council Scotland, it will be modelled on the contents of existing Visiting Arts Country Profiles, which cover some 40 countries in depth. The Scotland Cultural Profile is Visiting Arts' first such UK project, and the first to be compiled as an online database. It is due to be launched in October 2004. Aimed at a wide national and international market - including artists, festival organisers, promoters, cultural agencies, cultural policy makers, educators and the general public - the Profile will seek to present a diverse, contemporary image of Scotland and its arts, while providing a "one-stop-shop" for objective, reliable information and practical resources on the country's cultural infrastructure. It will be compiled as a web-accessible directory, incorporating authoritative articles covering contemporary issues and trends in international activity. The website can also be burnt onto a CD ROM for offline viewing and distribution. The website navigation tools will enable the visitor to browse the directory as though reading a book, or to view selected sections.
