Culture
Perhaps the most famous icon of Scottish traditional culture is the Highland bagpipe, which achieved the height of its popularity during Queen Victoria's reign - she liked to be woken by one playing outside her window. Scotland boasts impressive literary talents, kicking off with the wild man himself, Robbie Burns. These days literary festivals go gaga over grunge-and-drugs writers like Irvine Welsh. Hollywood fetes members of the Mac Pack such as Ewen McGregor and Robert Carlyle. Scotland's chefs have an enviable range of fresh ingredients at their disposal - meat, seafood and vegetables, as well as a reputation for some of the best game dishes in the world (think smoked salmon, venison and grouse). Other legendary Scottish meals include porridge, shortbread, haggis (a delectable mix of chopped lungs, heart and liver mixed with oatmeal and boiled in a sheep's stomach with surprisingly tasty results - vegetarian versions are also available), Scotch broth and that modern gourmet creation, the deep-fried Mars bar. Whisky is still the country's biggest export.

Scotland Time and Date Scotland Culture Back to Top The megaliths at Stonehenge and a prehistoric temple found at Stanton Drew in 1997 attest to the early presence of an able people, as do early historical and archaeological reports, but the first lasting influence on English culture was contributed by the Celts. Roads and ruins bear witness to the Roman occupation, which began with the invasion of Julius Caesar in 55 bc and extended until the 5th century ad. Christianity was introduced by Roman soldiers but made little headway with the populace, and its spread awaited the arrival of Saint Augustine, first archbishop of Canterbury, in the 6th century. Saxons became dominant. A record of their era is provided by the annals known as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and by the writings of Saint Bede the Venerable, the theologian and historian. The Norman Conquest in 1066 overthrew the Saxon dominance and, in its mixing of elements from the Saxon and Celtic past with the Norman, created a new culture. The Normans introduced feudalism and the French language to the upper classes. From the 11th to the 14th century French was used at court and in vernacular literature; Latin was used in scholarly literature. A major task for William the Conqueror and his successors was the amalgamation of Norman and Saxon and their common defense against warlike factions in Scotland, Wales, and Scandinavia. A stable social order directed toward these goals evolved slowly; elements of it still persist today. For example, both the strong class system of the English and their hereditary peerage have their roots in the Norman period.

Battle of Ticonderoga
The 42nd Highlanders Regiment at Ticonderoga in 1758. This letter was written from Lake George on 11 July 1758 by Capt. Allan Campbell, who was then serving in the 42nd Highlanders regiment. He is writing to his brother, John Campbell of Barcaldine, to inform him of the defeat of the British forces at Ticonderoga on 8 July by the French. Much of the letter is a rather sad listing of the names of officers, all of them Scottish, who were killed or injured in the battle. However, Captain Campbell is pleased to inform his brother that both he and his nephew George are unhurt.
Ticonderoga, almost on the Vermont border at the end of Lake Champlain, was an important post for control of the Upper New York valleys and was a principal point fought over by the British and French during the Seven Years' War. As Campbell mentions, the British forces failed to remove the French garrison at this encounter and fell back south to Lake George from where Campbell sent this letter. Fort Ticonderoga was to play a pivotal part in the early stages of the American Revolution 20 years later.
Transcription Captain Campbell abbreviated many words in his letter: for ease of reading, the missing portions of the words have been added in square brackets.

"Trading Freedom: the secret life of the FTAA" offers an explanation of the Free Trade Area of Americas, a proposed economic zone that will regulate the economic activity of one-sixth of humanity, overriding local democracy in favour of "rights" for multinational corporations throughout the Americas. This film is the story of those who resist - indigenous struggles, working-class organizations, women in rebellion, media activists, and a huge network of NGOs. "Footage from Chiapas, Quebec City, Sao Paulo, Akwesasne and Tijuana, plus the combined efforts of over 100 videographers, photographers, free radio outlaws, writers, editors, techs, and rabble-rousers make this the perfect evening out." Luther Blisset The film is presented by the film maker from Cambridge Imc and by the Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Campaign, Indymedia Scotland, the Camcorder Guerillas, and the Glasgow Chiapas Solidarity Group.
