  • I've been collecting book reviews and such for years. Somewhat sorted, they are now the huge Access FAQ It's a large document, and it would be more Web-polite of me to break it up. However, I stopped updating it when some of the other critics started placing entire books on their web sites. (Here's a list of critics.)
  • Lots of people have heard the rumor that L. Ron Hubbard said "The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion." On Usenet, this really is a Frequently Asked Question. So, of course, someone - me - eventually wrote a FAQ. It now exists in a Usenet FAQ version and in a Web page version.
  • While you're here, I have an opinion about the Church as an organization . And, as a scientist, I've examined the Scientology "tech"

For over 40 years, the Churches of Scientology and their members have involved themselves in actively solving the problems of society...
Opening its doors on 18 February, 1954, the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles began as a thinly-staffed group who, nevertheless, wanted to deliver L. Ron Hubbard's life-changing technology to others and help him achieve the goal of a new civilization. As word about the miracle results of Hubbard's technology spread, and as his organizational policy was issued and implemented, the Los Angeles church grew. It moved to larger and larger facilities to accommodate its growing congregation.
The LA Church moved to larger quarters in December, 1962,
at 2005 West 9th Street, where it was located until 1978.
In 1965, the Los Angeles church expanded into two organizations: the "Los Angeles Day Organization," and the "Los Angeles Foundation." Los Angeles Day Organization was also charged with the responsibility of being the senior Scientology organization serving Scientologists throughout the western United States. The Foundation organization was given its own role of servicing the workaday world of local LA.

The site that's being blocked, xenu.net , is in Norway, so they are not subject to the DMCA. The Scientologists can't shut the site itself down because it's outside the US. So they sent a demand to Google, which is based in California, and they complied with the request to remove the content from their index. Now, according to the DMCA, the accused infringer has the right to demand that Google reinstate the content, but there's a catch, if they do, they then would have to agree to the juristiction of the US courts.
We're getting the first real demo of a nightmarish scenario, a constitutional one, set up by the DMCA. And it looks like it's going to get much worse before it gets better. See the next section.

Introduction
Reading about what the followers of destructive sects believe in has made me scared of what will happen to our democratic society if their claims are not contested. I don't think that an enlightened person would ever join any one of these cults if he knew what they stand for, and thus I will provide information about what different sects believe. And if their claims are un- or pseudo-scientific, I will tell you what the scientific community has to say about them. What I'm looking for is not to give you both sides of the story, but to criticize things I dislike in the movements. If you want a more positive view of them, don't ask me to give you that. Instead you should follow the "pros" links I provide on each page.

THE ECCLESIASTICAL HIERARCHY OF THE SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
The Church of Scientology is formed into an ecclesiastical structure which unifies and aligns a multitude of diverse religious activities including not only auditing and training, but proselytization, ecclesiastical management, relay of communication, production of dissemination materials and many other functions. Thus the Scientology religious community is united both by common beliefs and practices and an organizational form uniquely suited to its religious mission. Scientologists come together in a worldwide hierarchical religious community. The structure of this community is an important, functional part of the Scientology religion. Because Scientology Scripture requires that its religious practices be ministered in an orthodox manner, the hierarchical structure helps ensure that individual churches receive the support and guidance needed to do this. All Scientologists are thus assured of an orthodox religious observance in every church around the world. Scientology organized madness
For starters, you might want to read the official Web pages of the "Church" of Scientology. For an opposing view, you can check what little I have or look at the wealth of critical info on Ron Newman's Scientology page , or both. If you did what I suggested, you might've noticed the Scientologists don't link to any critical pages, whereas the critics seem to always link to theirs. Apparently the Scientologists can't deal with any challenges to their beliefs and practices. In fact, they tried to remove the Usenet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology claiming that the name of the group infringes on their trademark "Scientology". In 1998, the Scientologists lost two legal rounds in Finland: the Ministry of Education refused to register the Finnish Church of Scientology as a religious body, and two Scientologists in visible positions were found guilty of libelling a psychologist. Here is a short account of both cases. Undoubtedly, they will be appealed. On May 19, 1996, an incredible deluge of pro-Scientology postings started in the newsgroup. Jon Noring wrote

Flash! Scientology exploits WTC tragedy! Just when you think there is no depth the ambulance-chasing cult will not sink to, they surprise you by going even further. The Church of Scientology has taken "Casualty Contact" to a whole new low. During the September 14, 2001 prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral following the horrific terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Fox News displayed a scrolling infoline at the bottom of the television screen. While ironically warning viewers that the "NYPD warns of cruel scams," this infoline subsequently offered an 800 number for "National Mental Health Assistance: 800-FOR-TRUTH."
