Program is funded in part by theNSF and designed for the average student in grades 4 through 9, regardlessof previous exposure to science. Over half of the students are girls. Studentsreceive packets of hands-on experiments, and send their reports to an assignedvolunteer scientist who provides encouraging feedback to develop and maintainthe students' interest in science. Through pen-pal correspondence, studentsexperience scientists as real people and as role models. Almost half ofthe volunteer scientist are women.

Begin with Directories and Portals when:
    • you have a broad topic
    • you want access to selected, evaluated, and annotated collections
    • you prefer quality over quantity
    • you want to locate Web sites rather than individual pages within these sites
Begin with the Invisible or Deep Web [searchable sites and databases] when:
    • you are looking for information that is likely to be stored in a database you are looking for information that is dynamically changing in content
    Begin with Search Engines when:

Internet Links The atmospheric sciences are traditionally divided into three topical areas: meteorology, climatology, and aeronomy. Meteorology is the study of the daily or even hourly changes in weather within the troposphere and lower stratosphere. Climatology, by contrast, focuses on statistical descriptions of the weather in the same layers of the atmosphere over longer periods of time ranging from a month to millions of years. Aeronomy is concerned with the physical state and dominant processes of the upper atmospherei.e., those regions above the lower stratosphere. Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies. Key ideas are identified by numbers (1).
Performance indicators are identified by bullets.
Sample tasks are identified by triangles ( s GO TO CONTENTS Elementary Information Systems 1. Information technology is used to retrieve, process, and communicate information and as a tool to enhance learning. Students:
    • use a variety of equipment and software packages to enter, process, display, and communicate information in different forms using text, tables, pictures, and sound. telecommunicate a message to a distant location with teacher help. access needed information from printed media, electronic data bases, and community resources.
This is evident, for example, when students:
s use the newspaper or magazine index in a library to find information on a particular topic.
s invite local experts to the school to share their expertise. 2. Knowledge of the impacts and limitations of information systems is essential to its effective and ethical use. Students:
    • describe the uses of information systems in homes, schools, and businesses.
