Egan S Water S Art Egan S Water S Art exhibits are designed to provide children with the opportunity to become lost in abstract thought for significant periods of time. When a child encounters an water exhibit their first attraction is often to floating objects, such as balls or boats, down the water pathways which have already been constructed by others. Within a few moments their interest changes into creating their own water flow patterns by inserting and removing panels. Often their fascination with manipulating the flowing water continues for an hour or two. Usually, the percentage of their time devoted to floating objects falls to zero or perhaps 5%. Without prior instruction, visitors can immediately become engaged as they create their own changes in the flow patterns of this water. Alterations in the water's speed, direction, turbulence and height are easily achieved, by simply inserting and removing panels. Observing the results prompts speculation about possibilities for the next move.

COURTESY OF THE MARIAN KOSHLAND SCIENCE MUSEUM A new science museum operated by the National Academy of Sciences is opening on April 23 in Washington, D.C. Exhibits at the Marian Koshland Science Museum ( http://www.koshland-science-museum.org ) are inspired by scientific topics explored in NAS reports. The exhibits invite visitor participation and interaction in an effort to present science and related public policy issues in an interesting and accessible way.
The museum was developed through a gift to NAS from University of California, Berkeley, biochemistry professor Daniel Koshland. It honors his wife of 52 years, immunologist and educator Marian E. Koshland, who died from lung cancer in 1997 at age 76. The director of the museum is Patrice L. Legro, who was formerly director of philanthropy services at NAS.
The museum includes three exhibits. "
