BATTLEFIELD EARTH: A SAGA OF THE YEAR 3000 Rating USA. 2000. Cast John Travolta (Terl), Barry Pepper (Jonnie Goodboy Tyler), Forest Whitaker (Ker), Kim Coates (Carlo), Richard Tyson (Robert), Michael McCrae (Zete), Sabine Karsenti (Chrissie), Christian Tessier (Mickey), Michael Perron (Rock) Plot In the year 3000 Earth has been invaded by the brutal Psychlos and humanity reduced to a slave species that the Psychlos regard as no more intelligent that animals. Terl, the Psychlo security supervisor, is sentenced to several more terms of service on Earth for an indiscretion. But the discovery of a vein of gold proves Terl’s hope and he launches a devious plan to mine it which involves teaching several of the man-animals how to use mining equipment. He puts the persistent escapee Jonnie Goodboy Tyler through a Psychlo education machine so that Jonnie can learn equipment use. But as Jonnie starts to learn mathematics and the Psychlo language, he also learns about Earth’s history and starts to scheme ways to rally humanity and reclaim Earth from the invaders. It is difficult to write an objective review of Battlefield Earth . The reason for all this can be placed at one credit on the film that is creating an enormous amount of controversy – ‘Based on a Novel by L. Ron Hubbard’. Lafayette Ronald Hubbard was a writer who wrote a good amount of sf and fantasy during the 1940s. Hubbard’s main claim to fame (at least one of the numerous ones he didn’t make up about himself such as being an explorer; a blood brother of the Blackfoot Indians; that he traveled in Asia meeting with holy men during his teens; that he had degrees in engineering and mathematics; that he was a nuclear physicist; and that he was a decorated Admiral in the US Navy who fought in five theaters of war during World War II, received over 20 medals and made a miraculous recovery from blindness and paralysis following injuries sustained in combat; and that he had written a novel called

How Do I Become a Science Fiction Writer?
by Edward Willett This article originally appeared in
Freelance , the Saskatchewan Writers Guild newsletter, in 2002. Hello, my name is Ed, and I'm a science fiction writer. OK, sure, I admit it, I also write lots of other stuff. My published or soon-to-be-published books range in subject matter from Ebola hemorrhagic fever to careers in outer space to skateboarding to Internet safety to how to get the most out of Microsoft Office. But I'm also the author of four young adult fantasy and science fiction novels, Soulworm The Dark Unicorn Andy Nebula: Interstellar Rock Star , and Spirit Singer , plus a number of short stories published in a variety of science fiction magazinesand as far as I'm concerned, that's my "real" writing. I have branched out: to women authors, stories that don't always end victorious, the ambiguous characters of cyberpunk, and always treasuring the rare and wonderful comic writers who don't take anything in the genre as sacred. I find a lot of good writing in many different styles. Science fiction seems to be one of the best genres for asking, "What does it mean to be human?" as well as "What if?" and "hmmm... so what can we do with

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Friday, January 16, 2004 Award-winning horror/fantasy writer Jack Cady dead at 71 By REGINA HACKETT SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER ART CRITIC Fantasy filtered through daily life into believable but extraordinary narratives was the specialty of Jack Cady, the Port Townsend novelist who died Wednesday night of cancer. He was 71. Best known among his nine published novels are "The Hauntings of Hood Canal," 2001; "The Off Season," 1996; and "Street: A Novel," 1995, all published by St. Martin's Press; and "Inagehi," published in 1993 by Broken Moon Press. Although he won just about every award in science fiction, including the Nebula, Phillip K. Dick Award, World Fantasy Award and Bram Stoker Award, he was not really a science-fiction writer, leaning closer to horror and fantasy. Nor was he an academic, even though he taught creative writing at Pacific Lutheran University, where he said he spent "13 happy years before retirement" and where he won a distinguished teaching award in 1992.

OK, here's the first Yule Chronicle. And as it's for such a festive time there are a couple of bonus stories in this issue. The first of which is the winner in a recent horror short story competition organised by JustBooks (more details top of the news section.
The second of the extra stories is Michael J. Arruda 's story 'He Came Upon a Midnight Clear'. This story just had to be included in the December issue - just read it, you'll know why.
I have discovered what a reading period is all about. We opened the doors for fiction submissions throughout October, and received far more than we expected, so much so that it took 'til the end of November to make the selection of stories to include in future Chronicles and to contact the authors. If I missed anyone or took a long time in replying, you have my apologies here - next time I will be more organised.
Well this will be the last Chronicle of the year and all that remains is to wish you happy celebrations whether it be Christmas, Hannukah or Eid.
    Author/Book News:
