You've carefully constructed your alien planet, lovingly invented alien beings, and painstakingly developed the alien society in which they live. Or perhaps you've extrapolated from current human technology and developed a vision of North America in A.D. 3050. Is the gravity appropriate for the size of your planet? Does your travel time match your speed and distance? You've worked hard to create a cohesive future Earth, alternate history, or extraterrestrial civilization, but the last thing you want to do is turn your manuscript over to an editor who doesn't know the difference between a light year and a light beer.
If you're a science fiction writer you need to ensure that the editor to whom you're entrusting your work shares your mindset. You need an editor who understands that Sol III is Earth while Sal III Jr. may be the natural son of Sal's third clone. You need an editor who recognizes the difference between typos and alien vocabulary.

NOTE
Any routine charge made to an author prior to the sale of a manuscript, however characterized by the agent, is defined by SFWA as a "fee" and represents conduct not in the author's best interest. (This clarification is in response to several attempts by questionable agents to evade criticism through semantic changes that do not actually represent any improvement in practicesonly in the labels on the bills sent to authors.)
Writer Beware
There are many views on the question of whether or not a writer needs an agent to make her first sale. Some people think a new writer's energy is best spent on submitting directly to publishers. Others feel that, with more and more large houses closing their doors to unagented submissions and those that do read unagented submissions taking longer and longer to do so, a new writer stands a better chance of publication if she seeks an agent first.
But there's no disagreement on the fact that after that first sale is made, a good agent is a tremendous boon to a writer's career. A good agent possesses contacts and inside knowledge the writer probably doesn't. He keeps current with editors' tastes and needs, knows what new imprints are starting up and which ones are downsizing, stays abreast of changing corporate policies, keeps track of who's newly hired and who just got fired. He's able to negotiate advances and complicated publishing contracts to the writer's advantage, and experienced in marketing subsidiary rights. Just as important, an agent serves as the writer's advocate in the increasingly confusing and competitive world of publishing.

INTERNET RESOURCES
Science fiction and fantasy: A guide to resources on the Web
October 2002
Vol. 63 No. 9 by Wendi Arant and Hal W. Hall Given the popular nature of science fiction and fantasy (SFF), there are millions of sites on the Internet dedicated to specific creators, genres, movements, history, scholarship, and fandom surrounding fiction, films, games, and television. The plethora of Web pages is problematic for the user, which makes having a guide useful.
Science fiction has evolved from its genre or pulp beginnings to an overlapping mixture of books, magazines, motion pictures, television, comics, conventions, and gaming. Each subset has its own communication infrastructure on the Web and in the world. This listing focuses primarily on the print subset of science fiction, with a nod to movies, television, and other media. In addition, science fiction and fantasy can arguably include such subgenre as horror, supernatural, and weird fiction, which we have tried to characterize through inclusion of some sites in these areas.
Selection of sites in this listing was based on usefulness (as in omnibus sites) and on authority (the accuracy of the material and the expertise of the source). An effort has been made to include sources that are available without a subscription and with unrestricted access.

Sometimes the characters involved are not even human, but are imagined aliens or other products of Earth evolution. The term is more generally used to refer to any literary fantasy that includes a scientific factor as an essential orienting component, and even more generally used to refer to any fantasy at all. Such literature may consist of a careful and informed extrapolation of scientific facts and principles, or it may range into far-fetched areas flatly contradictory of such facts and principles. Circlet Press Oh, what a lovely book! Francesca Lia Block is well-known for her lush Young Adult fantasies (especially her Weetzie Bat books), but this time she's writing for a decidedly adult audience. This series of interwoven short erotic tales is a delightful blend of magic, sex and life. The stories use fantasy and mood as a backdrop for characters with personal difficulties with relationships and sex. Those who prefer realistic fiction or are very into plot might find these stories frustrating; the interconnections are circular, not linear, and the imagery is where a lot of the sensuality comes from (though most of them are still very hot). But there is a tenderness and understanding throughout these stories that is uncommon in much erotic writing; one of these stories even made Heather cry (and another came pretty darn close). And the book itself is a pocket-sized hardcover that's as cute as a button. A truly rare offering from one of today's most original fantasy writers. (2000, 127 pp.)
