IV. Appendices I. Introduction This Collections Policy Statement deals with fantasy and science fiction and is intended to complement the existing Collections Policy Statement for Literature. While the latter statement addresses the need for the Library to acquire works by authors "whose writings are generally regarded as having literary merit [or] as representing important trends in serious creative writing", genre designations such as fantasy, science fiction, science fantasy, and horror often eliminate works of cultural and artistic merit from serious consideration by the literary mainstream. Although often overlooked, the predominantly Anglo-American genre of fantasy and its sub-genre, science fiction, both express and embody with increasing significance important elements of the popular culture of the United States, as well many other nations; hence, they are accorded separate treatment in the present statement. 43. Online Writing Workshops, LLC: Workshops For Aspiring Writers!
Intro page for the Online writing Workshops site, which will feature interactive online writing workshops for aspiring writers in various genres science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, etc.
http://cgi.onlinewritingworkshop.com/
Online Writing Workshops are virtual writers' communities in which writers can get feedback on their works in progress, improve their writing through critiquing others, and meet fellow aspiring writers. Submissions are easy to make through a simple Web-based interface and are posted instantly for others' feedback. Reviews and ratings are provided by other members of the workshops and overseen by administrative staff from the publishing industry. Each month, the editorial staff picks a small number of submissions as Editor's Choices, provides the authors with feedback and comments, and publishes them in the workshop's e-mail newsletter. A discussion mailing list is also available for workshop members to use in order to exchange tips, discuss reviews, and get to know each other. For a serious aspiring writer, the workshop can be invaluable. We know because our members tell us so! HOME SPONSORSHIPS PRIVATE WORKSHOPS ABOUT US ...

H.G. Wells: The Time Machine A complete and unabridged edition of Wells's classic novel of the future follows the Time Traveller as he hurtles one million years into the future and encounters the childlike Eloi and the frightening Morlocks. In this great classic, Wells not only defined one of the enduring themes of SF (time travel), but he actually meant this to be a social commentary on the growing disparity between the working and wealthy classes.
Neuromancer by William Gibson William Gibson through the 1990's has been one of the most original talents SF has seen in a generation. He's a writer who has helped redefine a large segment of the genre. This is a fine representative novel by one of the most popular authors in a field full of leaders.
    The Rediscovery of Man
the complete short stories of Cordwainer Smith One of the great names in the history of science fiction! One of the early anthologies of this same material was titled "You Will Never Be The Same." And after I read it, I never was the same again as a writer, an artist, a thinker. To walk in the worlds of wonder of Cordwainer Smith is to experience the universe in a new way. More recent contenders include Michael Swanwick, but the hurdle is very, very high. Makes you understand that "sigh-fie" can be transcendant literature. These are treasures that all too few people have discovered. Read him if you are a poet and an imagineer.

This list is an attempt to list the most famous and influential science fiction/fantasy writers. Although this list certainly includes the giants of the field, such as Asimov, Heinlein, Card, and Clarke, it does not necessarily include all writers of outstanding literary merit. Some of the "famous" science fiction and fantasy writers on this list may be included because they have been particularly prolific or have had significant influence on the field. Obviously this is a somewhat subjective list, but a large variety of resources have been consulted : awards lists, historical commentaries, university literature course materials, best seller lists, internet portals and other web sites, etc. Most of these references have been summarized on Famous Science Fiction Authors Page 2 A few people are included on this list because they are very famous and they have written science fiction/fantasy, but they aren't necessarily famous primarily for their SF/F writing. The authors in this category are Carl Sagan, Anne Perry, G. K. Chesterton, Stephen King, George Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, Deepak Chopra, Glen A. Larson, J. Michael Straczynski and Andrew Greeley.
