Believe it or not, the best place for these things is still the Science Fiction Round Table on Genie. (Or it was. I finally cancelled my account a few months ago since I just don't have the time for it.) IDT is supposedly in the process of moving Genie onto the net ( http://genie.idt.net , although there isn't much there yet since everyone's sticking to the old Genie), so who knows how things will be in the future. Meanwhile, many SFRT refugees on the web are converging in 2 places: Dueling Modems , which is pretty much the official SFRT on the net, and also offers discussion and web areas on a variety of other topics, and SFF-NET , another good SF hangout run by ex-SFRT people. There's a lot of great SF stuff on the net, and you can find a lot of them just by following the links above (which lead to pages with more links, which lead to...I think you get the idea:) ). There are also tons of writing related resources online. I'm a member of the Horror Writers Association and I plan to join the Science Fiction Writers of America eventually.

Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Writing on the Web
Feature Topic and Links: Fantasy Writing: Inspirations Even those imaginative writers of fantasy literature can sometimes find themselves short on ideas. How does the intrepid fantasy author best cope with this situation? After all, trying to produce credible fantastic stories when you're at a loss for fresh concepts can result in work that falls back on the standard cliches of the genre and thus feels, well . . . uninspired. To avoid this predicament, it's best to take a breather from writing and simply read. Read books and stories by other writers, and research topics that interest you until you begin to feel that pleasant click in your mind as it latches onto a new story. Of course, you'll want to begin by surfing. Here are some places to start Web sites dealing with folklore, mythology, and other fantastic stuff: Britannia: King Arthur This fantasy topic never dies! If you're planning to write about Arthurian legend, you'd better make your tale different, since there's lots of competition. This site is great for researching all the finer points and latest scholarship about the King and his cohorts. The Encyclopedia Mythica Don't confine yourself to Celtic, Greek and Roman mythology when looking for seeds of inspiration. This site has extensive information about Haitian, Chinese, Persian and Aztec mythical beings, among others.

The African American Science Fiction Character in Literature, Television, and Film by Ben Davis Jr. (8. Mar 2004) The work is intended as a literary article based on my master's thesis that focused on the works of Octavia Estelle Butler and from a faculty symposium on the sci-fi genre as mythology. This article functions as a kind of survey into how Black characters in science fiction literature, television, and film have grown and have been handled in the pop culture medium over the decades. Sometimes the character is grossly stereotyped or tokenized, deemed unimportant only to serve as "fodder" or is under-appreciated, and how that character is treated as human and not so much as "the other."
