Issue 16 - August 2002
Introduction:
July was a little more hectic than I'd care for. We finally managed to read all the stories submitted in the May reading period and notified all authors involved, had two short holidays booked and then just as I get back into the swing of things with the site we experienced a HDD crash that put us out of action for five days.
Anyway, everything is now fixed and I'm back into updating the site, just slightly behind with reviews but I'll make an effort to get these up to date in the next few days.
Our writing contest is now over and we will be reading the entries this month and an announcement will be made in the next Chronicle. As this has been fairly successful we are thinking of having a second contest in the later part of the year - details will be posted as soon as it's ready to go.
We hope you find something of interest inthis issue - if so let us know, we like receiving emails.

A Guide to Feminist Science Fiction Resources
in Print and on the Net:
Bibliographies and Indexes
There are no indexes specifically limited to feminist science fiction materials, although there are indexes to science fiction in general. Consequently, other more general resources must be used. On-line bibliographies such as the MLA and Expanded Academic Index provide the most recent information, although they do not include the full range of publications where science fiction primary and secondary literature appear. Finding critical essays and short fiction published in small magazines remains a problem, as the few indexes which include them are not updated very frequently. These works provide lists and bibliographic information of primary works of science fiction by women and/or science fiction with a feminist perspective; lists of female characters; and a few entries on secondary or critical works.
Two excellent electronic sources are Laura Quilter's Feminist Science Fiction WWW page and the short lists compiled for the Tiptree Award . For more information about these sites, see the

Other outlandish tales include John Wayne battling cancer using a highly alternative therapy, a gene for integrity being harvested from the brain of an unwilling donor, and the landing of Christopher Columbus in modern-day Manhattan. Included are the Locus and Nebula Award-nominated novelette Auspicious Eggs and several previously unpublished pieces.

H.G. Wells: The Time Machine A complete and unabridged edition of Wells's classic novel of the future follows the Time Traveller as he hurtles one million years into the future and encounters the childlike Eloi and the frightening Morlocks. In this great classic, Wells not only defined one of the enduring themes of SF (time travel), but he actually meant this to be a social commentary on the growing disparity between the working and wealthy classes.
Neuromancer by William Gibson William Gibson through the 1990's has been one of the most original talents SF has seen in a generation. He's a writer who has helped redefine a large segment of the genre. This is a fine representative novel by one of the most popular authors in a field full of leaders.
The Rediscovery of Man
the complete short stories of Cordwainer Smith One of the great names in the history of science fiction! One of the early anthologies of this same material was titled "You Will Never Be The Same." And after I read it, I never was the same again as a writer, an artist, a thinker. To walk in the worlds of wonder of Cordwainer Smith is to experience the universe in a new way. More recent contenders include Michael Swanwick, but the hurdle is very, very high. Makes you understand that "sigh-fie" can be transcendant literature. These are treasures that all too few people have discovered. Read him if you are a poet and an imagineer.

Sometimes the characters involved are not even human, but are imagined aliens or other products of Earth evolution. The term is more generally used to refer to any literary fantasy that includes a scientific factor as an essential orienting component, and even more generally used to refer to any fantasy at all. Such literature may consist of a careful and informed extrapolation of scientific facts and principles, or it may range into far-fetched areas flatly contradictory of such facts and principles. In either case, plausibility based on science is a requisite, so that such precursors of the genre as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley 's Gothic novel Frankenstein , or the Modern Prometheus ) and Robert Louis Stevenson 's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

INTERNET RESOURCES
Science fiction and fantasy: A guide to resources on the Web
October 2002
Vol. 63 No. 9 by Wendi Arant and Hal W. Hall Given the popular nature of science fiction and fantasy (SFF), there are millions of sites on the Internet dedicated to specific creators, genres, movements, history, scholarship, and fandom surrounding fiction, films, games, and television. The plethora of Web pages is problematic for the user, which makes having a guide useful.
Science fiction has evolved from its genre or pulp beginnings to an overlapping mixture of books, magazines, motion pictures, television, comics, conventions, and gaming. Each subset has its own communication infrastructure on the Web and in the world. This listing focuses primarily on the print subset of science fiction, with a nod to movies, television, and other media. In addition, science fiction and fantasy can arguably include such subgenre as horror, supernatural, and weird fiction, which we have tried to characterize through inclusion of some sites in these areas.
Selection of sites in this listing was based on usefulness (as in omnibus sites) and on authority (the accuracy of the material and the expertise of the source). An effort has been made to include sources that are available without a subscription and with unrestricted access.
